I have been reading a lot of posts about children diagnosed with A.D.H.D. I am at the very start of the process for diagnoses with my 7 year old son. I live in Hull and am sick of getting mixed opinions about A.D.H.D. Since birth he has had difficult behaviour, from not sleeping, EVER, to being politely asked not to attend playgroups with him. He is hyperactive, to say the least, constantly running, fidgeting, tapping, making noises, clicking etc etc. He is very impulsive, shouting out inappropriate things at inappropriate times, has to be first in the door, out of the door, first to finish his tea, first to do everything, at whatever cost. The list is endless. I have researched A.D.H.D. for a few years now but have always been put off pushing for a diagnosis as I was told that they can't be diagnosed until the age of 7, which I see is untrue as many people on here have diagnoses before the age of 7. I was also always told, he will be better when he is walking, he will be better when he is on solid foods, he will be better when he is at nursery, he will be better when he starts school etc etc. Always fobbed off by Drs, health visitors, school nurses etc. He is now settled in school but is having major difficulties. There is not a day goes by when I don't get called in for something he has done, he is also very violent with other children, he says they wind him up, but this is constant, all day every day, at school and at home. I have been told, by the teachers, that it can't be A.D.H.D. as he enjoys colouring and can concentrate on this activity, also at home if he is watching a film he likes he will watch it without a problem. I have read though that children with A.D.H.D. can actually focus on an activity they enjoy doing. I am so confused and wondered if anyone else has been through the same. I truly believe he has A.D.H.D. but I think the school just think he is a naughty boy and that I am trying to make excuses for him. I have just been to my G.P. and am awaiting a referall. I currently give him omega 3 and evening primrose oil daily, I have been doing this for 2 years and he is better than he was, so god knows what the school would think if he wasn't taking this, but I don't want to stop it, and fear that he may not be diagnosed as his behaviour is better on it, allthough still bad. I would appreciate any comments, on experiences, advice, books to read etc. Many thanks
