Do you give your child their meds when not in school?

I don't give my son son his Vyvanse when not in school. I can see a difference because when he is on his meds he is obssesive about things and more emotional. At school all day he does fine and has improved greatly from before. Before he wouldn't stay in his seat, called, out, hummed, wallered in the floor, just things the other kids weren't doing. 1 out of 26. We knew he had a problem. When he's home, we're not making him sit still. We still get him to reaed and even do workbooks but after much threatening. (God bless the DSi). I just don't like the dampening of his personalty on the meds, he's grumpy and tired. Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks Brandy for the reply. We have just finished the 2nd week of scool and with him on his Vyvanse. Things have been going great. He's acting more like his normal self and doing wonderful in school. H eand another little boy even got in trouble for talking to each other when they were supposed to be listening which I know sounds bad, but my main worry was that the med was making him zombie=like and becoming an outcast. He is making friends and socializing like normal, now. I don't know, maybe the break from the med did him some good because he is doing wonderfully with it now. His teachers and doctor and we )mom and dad) are still keeping an eye on it though.

Teresa, it's up to the two of you to determine what works for YOU! I don't know much about Vyvanse... that said,is that the first prescription you've tried? Just wondering if perhaps there is a different drug that might be better for him - one that doesn't make him grumpy & tired. My oldest son was diagnosed as a teenager and did not like the way the drugs made him feel so chose not to take them at that time. It's only as a young adult (18 now) that he's decided he'd like to try something again. For me, I just feel soooo much better on my meds that I can't imagine not taking them! My daughter (16) goes back & forth a little. If she knows she has a lot to accomplish she'll take her Ritalin. If it's a lazy day, she doesn't. I find summer is the perfect time to adjust dosage or try new things as it allows us to get back on track by the time school is back in. If I were you I'd talk to your doctor. For my family it's all about finding a drug that helps with the focus but doesn't affect the personality!! Good luck!

My 11yr old son is on Concerta and I have found that he does very well when on his meds. He never used to smile or laugh a lot. Now I have a happy boy and he says that the meds make him feel better. If he misses a dose, he gets a bit hyper and seems like he doesn't know what to do. I keep him on the meds during summer holidays because he tells me all the time he feels better on them. concerta is the only meds he has been on.
