Really want to take our son off of medication.

Hi. My son is turning 8 and we would really like to take him off the Metidate. I've heard of supplements that do wonders. I've tried a combo. of vit. B, niacin. zinc, magnesium & omegas. Did not seem to work. When he "comes down" from his medicine, it is sad and frustrating to see.
I would really love to find something natural to help him. Any advice?

My son is currently on concerta for ADHD and I have been looking for alternatives. I do think that the meds help him concentrate in school, but I am worried about the effect they could have long term. I have recently changed his diet, and have taken out most (not all, since I can't control everything he will have at school) of the dyes from the foods that he eats and have noticed a difference. He is able to focus and is less combative, so I think this will work for us. Best of luck!

Hi to all mums with ADHD kids...

As I do not agree with giving children Ritalin due to the side effects, I decided to go the natural route when looking for a treatment and medication for my daughter.

If anyone is interested in this, take a look at these sites:!&id=4763422

The Neurotherapy treatments & change of diet with additional natural supplements has made such a difference to our lives, I recomment it to everyone with a child with ADD/ADHD!!!

Good luck x

Sometimes, children can have a vision disorder that is hard to pick up on a routine eye exam. Has he seen a developmental optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam? The symptoms of ADD/ADHD and vision disorders can mimic each other. For more info:

Hey, my son is 11And a half and we tried taking him off the meds when he was younger and again when he was 10! He went from 2(5mg) pills a day to one and then tried none but he could not funtion very well at school and was affecting his learning! He just needs that small 5mg in his system to function but now had to go back on 2 pills because last summer he started taking seizures and the ritalin and antiseizure meds did not work well together and decressed the ritalin from working! Some kids just need to be on that low dose to function! I am hoping someday in his life he can get off it! Hope things work out for you!

Hi Tammie, try Memory Charge. It is a natural supplement. It is in powder form so you can mix it with orange juice. it has Choline in it. 1 tablespoon is equivalent to the amount found in 11 lbs of fish. Over 80% of the population is deficient in Choline which is considered an Essential Nutrient and is essential in brain and cerebral functions, it helps with focus and concentration. It is also good for Alzheimer's, headaches and migraines. Here is a link and you can see the ingredients. fell free to email me at

fish oils in the am, melatonin at night and all the vitamins but we do it with the mix of the meds so that he is not always on the let down.

My daughter was diagnosed w/ADHD & put on meds at a young age. All along she didn't have ADHD. Now that she is 20 I have come to realize she will live with me the rest of her life. She has Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Did the medicine cause it? I want to say so. My advice is try changing the diet, & give vitamins. Jenny McCarthy has a good diet plan on her website. I would avoid meds at all cost.
