Moms,

Today is Read Across America, a day when children are encouraged to read and our black kids have reading scores lower than whites. Kids respond better to books that reflect their culture and I have selected over 100 children's books that reflect African American culture.

Visit my blog for more information on Read Across America and to view my list of African American children's books.

It's not realistic for me to try to read each day. But i do read regularly to my 6 month old daughter Zara. We love "Goodnight moon", and the "Angelina Ballerina" series. I want her to enjoy reading when she gets older. My mother always read to my sister and i before bed and i love her for it!

Ive been reading to my daughter since before she was born....now with her being so active I try to sit her down for a story at least once a day....I miss reading to her at bedtime but she always falls asleep right after her bottle....

I honestly read to my son maybe once a week. I will make it a point to read a book to him before his goes to sleep.
