Hi. My son has had this goopy yellowish green stuff in his eye since the day he was born. I asked the doctor about it and she says he may have a clogged tear duct, but I have been massaging his ducts for 3 months now and it has not gotten any better. His eye almost always has a tear coming out of it. Any suggestions or should I be really concerned about this? Noone else in the family has gotten any of these symptoms so I do not think it is pink eye, which is very contagious. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

My son will be 9 months tuesday and this just started a day or two ago I looked up signs of going blind and everything because I knew that goopy eyes were a sign of going blind and I didnt want that to be the case, but looking on here and reviewing everyone answers to the post makes me feel a lot better! But I do have a question its not in both eyes and its not an every night thing some nights it does it and others it doesnt one night might be in the left next in the right. Should I be concerned about that or is it common?

My Daughter had the same thing and my doctor suggested that I get drops I think that I just bought the over the counter antibacterial drops by Polysporine (can't totally remember as it was 2 years ago.)  It cleared uo within a few days.

My son was the same way, and the doctor told me that it was a clogged tear duct. I massaged it for a long time, but it didn't get better until he was about 6 months. Now he is 7 months and there are no problems anymore. I know it is frustrating, especially for pictures, but it does clear up.

If you've already talked to your doctor, there's probably not much more they'll do. I asked mine 3 times and the answer was always the same -we won't even consider doing anything until your baby's 9-12 months old if his eye is still goopy. Do you breastfeed? I dropped a couple of drops of milk in his eye every day for two weeks and it cleared up completely never to return again. A nurse at the hospital where we delivered told us to try this. It worked! Why my doctor didn't suggest it, I can only chalk up to being too busy to remember. Breastmilk is a cure-all that is also used in other countries as eye ointment, so I guess it's an accepted treatment now.

My son is eight weeks old and he also has had this since birth. The Dr says its not infected and too keep massaging the ducts which I have. She said that it could last up until hes a year old. Some days it seems worse than others. I wipe it with sterile water several times a day.

My newborn also has goopy stuff coming from her eye and the doctor also said it was probably a clogged tear duct. He said that they wouldn't start to worry about it until she's 6 months, so for now I just try to keep it clean.

Might be conjunctivitis. Go to your local doctor and get it checked out, might need some prescription medication if it is to clear it up.

Also try saline drops on cottonwool to clear it up, wiping from the corner near his nose towards the other corner (one wipe per cottonwool). Don't know where you live, but here in Australia you can get saline from the chemist.

Hope that helps. My daughter got conjunctivitis at about 10wks and the saline helped keep her eye clear and the eye drops prescribed by the doctor had it cleared up in a couple of days.

A friend had a similar problem with her newborn and was advised by the health visitor to bathe the eye in a little of her breast milk (sounds strange I know) and it did clear up. But I would go back to the Dr and get it checked again if there has been no improvement.

It might be some type of eye infection. My daughter had this, and her doctor prescribed us an eye cream that I put in like eye drops twice a day. It cleared up within 3 days.

Thats strange, my son just started getting goop in his eyes (he's 9 months old now). At first I thought it was pink eye, but I don't think it is because his eyes aren't red etc. I thought my baby was the only one with it!! I have no idea what causes it though...
