I am now a mom of 3 - I have twin girls about 16 months old and now a new 4 week old little boy. My girls never had any of these issues so I am thrown for a loop a little. My little guy seems to have excessive gas and pooping pain/issues. He grunts and growns like an adult man wheen he needs to pass gas or have a bowel movement. Have any of you other moms noticed this with your babies and what did you do to help them. Right now I am strictly breast feeding and hope to continue since I had to supplement with my twins i would be nice not to have to spend the money on formula again. I already watch my own diet closely to make sure that I stay away from gases foods - so I really don't know what else to do. It wouldn't bother me so much if it didn't seem to prevent him from geting to sleep at night. ON a side note I should say he is by no means colicy so it is tolerable I just feel bad when I see him struggling to pass - soemthing.

Thank you for any helpful suggestions.

Hi im actualy a DAD as mum is sleeping but we have a 3 week old girl. We was feeding her SMA milk but she was very clogged up on it so have changed her to Aptamil which has calmed her down alot. Her pooing has been regular but today she has started having bouts of what seems like stomack cramps along with the crying. Straining hard to poo and lots of wind. Could this be a sign of colic and if so any sugestions ???

Thanks

omg my baby had such a horrible time pooping :( i felt horrible just sitting there watching him try to go. he would get to the point of crying. applejuive is what my doctor recommended- but he is much older thsn ur son.
however when my son was ur babies age a lil trick that helps...constipation, is a little sugar water- like 4 ounces of water and like a forth of a teaspoon. but the doctor told me if i wanted to try this i should only let him drink 4 ounces through out the entire day so i made the bottle fed him it 4 times a day (1 ounce at a time) and just places it in the fridge until i needed it again.

My son would wake up to poo or pass gas sometimes it was a big deal for a while but diet seemed to work I didn't cut to much but things like oranges strawberries tomatos kiwi fruit and beans would get him going I don't know what those things have in common (except kiwi fruit that is a master laxative) he is great now well unless he eats a kiwifruit before bed even in the morning I know that my day will be filled with poo and I have to watch the bean content but usually no big deal, he's 16 months I did the bicycle kicks and belly rubbing I rubbed him every night before bed... Good luck your little man will come right:)

I would highly recommend Colief - it comes in a 5ml bottle and costs £12 but you can get it free on prescription. My little one had really bad colic/wind from 2 weeks. She would cry every time she tried to pass wind. We switched to Dr Brown's bottles bottled and Colief drops when she was 6 weeks and we had a completely different baby. She even started sleeping through the night! We were using formula but it can be used with breast milk also, though most likely expressed milk. It's an enzyme that breaks down the lactose in the milk and makes it much easier for your baby to digest. My daughter is now 17 weeks and we have started to wean her off the drops.
Hope you find something that works!

instead of directly breastfeeding i would pump and then get the playtex bottles with the liners. it helped my daughter a lot and she didn't have gas problems after that. the bottles and the liners are cheap and you can still breastfeed and don't have to spend the money on formula

Hang in there - it won't last forever! My son is 6 months old and he had a terrible time with gas/pooping etc. at that age. It seemed like it went on for a long time. My son was strictly breastfed as well and I like you watched what I ate and it seemed that nothing was helping him. The only thing I can suggest is patience. When it seemed he was at his worst - I would give him some Mylecon. Good Luck and Congratulations!

a warm blanket from the dryer (but not too hot) on the tummy might help the gas and bowelmovements has helped both my daughter that had similar trouble before we found out she was lactose intollerant. as well with my son who is also 4 weeks old and is having trouble with gas and bowel movement pain. also like others have already mentioned just gently applying pressure to the baby's tummy helps alot too. As well as Gripe water helps. That is pretty much what our doctors said to do for my daughter.

By the Way congrats and I hope something helps you and your little one out.

There is such a thing as Gas-X for babies.....it's different then Gripe water! Maybe that will help?

My little girl was exactly the same way. I went on a strict diet, no dairy, brocolli, etc etc etc and honestly I think it had little to do with what I was eating and more to do with her little digestive track developing. I did stop taking my iron supplements and that did seem to affect her. After about 2-3 weeks of it being quite painful for her, it did seem to get easier and now at 10 months she has no pain. I started to do the infant massage on her belly and that seemed to at least calm her and at the end i would gently, but firmly push her little legs in to her chest and she would let out a big toot and seemed much more content. Eventually just me talking to her in the "massage voice" would settle her till I could position for the massage. Just gentle pressure on her belly helped give her some relief as well. Gripe water did nothing for her but make her vomit, but I have heard that Baby Oval is supposed to be a miracle, never tried it myself. Good luck, and "this too shall pass"

I know its awfull but surprisingly it is normal. My lil girl had the same problem and it used to break my heart to see her strain so much she would go bright red and grunt like crazy. As long as the poop isnt firm and all in one piece there is nothing to worry about his little digestive system is just a little under developed and will get better with time. My lil girl now has no trouble going but it did take a few months for her to adjust. If it bothers you go to your GP anyway it cant hurt to have it checked but i dont think you have anything to worry about.

Dairy is a very very common intolerance and most people suffer to SOME degree! My daughter is 20 months and she's still not able to drink milk, although it's much better than it used to be.....she can now have cheese and yogurt and 2% milk isn't too bad but if I even give her one glass of 3% (whole milk which is recommended ) she breaks out in a horrible rash! It affects everyone different; definitely something to look into!

BTW Dana is right, it could have to to with what it is you're eating...whatever you eat, your baby eats....

When my middle child was about the same age he started getting constipated a lot. It really hurt me to see b/c I couldn't do anything about it. I tried changing his formula, feeding him less at a time, different medicines...nothing seemed to work, until my doctor suggested I start watering down his formula a little bit. Like if he was taking a 4oz bottle then fill it with 4oz of water but only put enough formula in for 3oz. I know you said that your baby is breastfed, but maybe you could try giving him a little bit of water? I don't honestly know about what to do for a 4wk old baby...but you could check with your doctor to see if that could help.

My son is 9 months and still has painful gas occasionally. But when he was little he had horrible gas pains, we would have to help him poop every time. I would hold him on my chest so there was firm pressure on his belly and just rub his back and try to soothe him. And if that didn't help we would lay him on his back and physically help him by holding his legs while he pushed so he didn't have to do all the work. But the thing that worked best for us and still does at night when he wakes up with painful gas is rubbing his tummy in clockwise circles, it usually helps get it out and he goes back to sleep. Hope it gets better for you soon

I would try laying him over my lap so my knees were pressed into his belly... that pressure might ease the pain.
I've also seen pulling the legs up to the belly (like a squat) seems to ease the pain some too.

Congrats mommy on ur new lil' guy! You're a BRAVE woman.....twins and a newborn!

My first thought is he might be intolerant of something ur eating because ur breastfeeding? You might wanna try and cut out dairy.....I know when I consumed a lot of dairy my daughter would struggle. You can try rubbing his tummy and/or lower back in a clockwise motion or running his lil' legs in a bicycle motion?

Here's an article I found that you might find helpful?! I would also suggest mentioning it at ur son's next doctors visit....GOOD LUCK!
