5 week ultrasound

went to the ER today due to some very mild cramping. The radiologist gave me an ultrasound but I am only 5 weeks and 1 day. THey showed me my "pregnancy" and showed me the sac but said it was too early to detect a fetus. She saw it but couldnt confirm it since it was too small to even measure. I thought I was 6 weeks but when they measured my sac it said I was a whole week off. I guess I got my dates wrong. Has this happened to you? When was your earliest ultrasound? If you have had one done at 5 weeks could you only see the sac as well? I know my dr said it was normal and ok but I am just worried and wondering...how normal this is. This is my 2nd pregnancy and my 1st ultrasound with my daughter was when I was 7 weeks.

hi christine,
dont worry at all, im expecting my second now but with my first baby the same thing happened to me. i went into hospital with cramps at 5 weeks and they did an early pregnancy scan, they could only see the sac with me too as the embryo was to small, i went back around 7 weeks and there was a tiny dot on the screen which was my healthy baby, you will be fine, good luck x

I had abdominal cramping at around 5 weeks with all 3 of my pregnancy (all boys). With my 1st I was so scared because I had bleeding as well. My GP wasn't very helpful so I went to the hospital and they reassured me that it can be normal and they did a scan. The normal scan they do over the belly didn't work so they did an internal scan (a small scanning probe thingy is inserted into the vagina) and that showed a tiny dot with a tiny heartbeat, I was dated at 5 weeks & 5 days! The tiny dot is now 9 years old.

If it makes you feel better try and get as much rest as possible, NO HOT baths though! Hope everything is OK and good luck. x

don't get worried yet, a heartbeat cannot be detected until 8 weeks. I had a similar situation happen to me. unfortunately I was 5 weeks with my first ultrasound and only a sac could be seen at 8 weeks I found out I had a blighted ovum... this is where the sack develops but a baby doesn't, this usually results in a miscarriage. ultrasound typically go of the date of your last period, but can be off as much as 3 weeks. don't worry... just wait a few weeks and see what happens at the 8 week plus ultrasound

I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks and they couldn't see anything but a sac then either. My next was at 9 weeks and you could see my little squishy then. Lol just give it time.

While they are at the closest in the 5-8 weeks range, size measurements from ultrasound are very inaccurate guesses based on averages. I've had three pregnancies with multiple ultrasounds to detect age/size. Not a single one was even close.

OK, I have a scenario pertaining to the 5 week ultrasound. Parents are both over 40. Pregnancy unplanned. Father is not sure if the child is his. At the first ultrasound, it was said that the baby was double what it should be at 5 weeks. Yet the mother says she is only 5 weeks along. Does anyone know how far along she would be if you double what a baby would be at 5 weeks?

Thanks

i had my first ultrasound at what we thought was 12 weeks, but they insisted i was only 10.5 and had to go back the following week. they changed my due date to the 3rd of july rather then the 22nd june and i ended up having my baby girl on the 19th of june so i still think my dates were correct. they say the ultrasounds can be out by 10-20% and when you are talking about babies that 10-20% can be a lot of weight for them. try not to worry, i know its easier said then done :) good luck

I had my first scan at about 4 weeks just to confirm dates, and they could see everything, I even have photo's from the scan. But I think it depends on the machine they use and technican. My sister in law who is 1 dress size smaller than me also had clearer images, so body mass may or may not have an effect * don't quote me on that one though* !

I wouldn't worry. at 5 weeks a baby is only the size of a sesame seed so basically invisible to the naked eye. if there was a sack there then you should be fine! I had an ultra sound at 5 weeks as well (only just last week because i started bleeding) and there was nothing there not even the sack so that is when you worry. All the best i hope your pregnancy goes smoothly for you.

LMFAO! You have absolutely NO idea! The only reason I even entertained the idea was because I started " showing " ......LOL! I was goin thru a really rough, stressful time in my life and WOW! was right! I didn't notice any of the symptoms like frequent urges to pee and I still got my period ( or spotted I guess but I had gone to my doctor and she said it was because of stress ) and didn't have morning sickness.....thank god, right! I had enough to digest without trying to keep my food down! Haha! I was almost half way thru my pregnancy before I found out.....kinda nice but a tad bit overwhelming! Good thing I'm not a drinker! Anyhow, I LOVE my daughter very much and she's my lil' angel! Couldn't have come at a better time!

I had my 1st ultrasound at 4weeks 5days saw a fetal pole (looked nothing like a baby) even saw a heart beat! But couldn't detect it as it was to faint... and the ultrasound tech was so surprised cause you usualy don't see anything till about 6weeks pregnant... It also depends on where the baby is sitting, if they don't think anything is wrong you should just stop worrying and relax.. if things go wrong consult you're doctor =]

My first ultrasound was at 6 weeks and she couldn't see anything either, I was a bit freaked so they gave me another one at 8 weeks and we could see her then :) And every time I went for a scan (I had quite a few) the measurements and due dates would vary. I also had some mild cramping to begin with and my dr said it could be the foetus attaching to the uterus, or something like that I think, my memory is shot since I fell pregnant, so I can't remember the correct term for it! Hope it all goes well for you, good luck.
