Any advice for a mom who's baby will need to wear a hip spica cast?

i dont know if im 2 late to reply. But make sure u ask how u want the hip spica,they tell u there not ment to be standing in it but my son loves to stand an try an walk in it lol. (lil bugga) lol. Hes not ment 2 but he just howls all day if i dont let him. But i try not 2 to long :) Reasn why i say ask how u want it. Is because its much easier 2 position. So hard to explain writting down. My son has had his on for nearly a mnth now its coming off in 2mnths. But we had it changed because he had diarrhea an it got inside it so we got it chnged. Now th spica he had b4 his diarrhea was perfect till he got his new 1. The first 1 we had we cud sit him in his pram an let him sit on his bike an ride around. Now the new 1. They changed the position in his leg it was more straight then bent so it was hard to sit him up and dont know if yourv seen that a spica has a piece of wood along it. The old 1 had it straight along above his knees now the new 1 has it above his knee and down twards his knee. Hard 2 explain sorry. Just saying that having it along above his knees like along his lap area it way better. Dont know if this will help but yea its how they make the cast is the main part i rekon. An 2 get around find a lil bike type for kids that way they can explore. But your baby only young my boys nearly 2 now. An they love lots of toys aroun them because they get board very easily :) Hope this helped sorry if it didnt :)

I am friends with a couple who adopted a little girl that had been born with a displaced hip on one side and a dislocated hip on the other. She had to go in for surgery when she was 6 months old and had to wear a cast that went from her nipples down to both knees, with a space in between so that she could still go to the washroom (they had to put a diaper around the outside of the cast!) I'm not sure if this is the same cast your baby will be wearing, but their daughter adapted pretty well to it. They just used a lot of pillows to support her when she was laying on the floor but they still took her out and did everything else normally, although now that I think about it, I'm not sure how they dealt with the car seat issue! She then had that large cast replaced with a smaller one that didn't go as high up her chest and as low on her legs. She was in that one for about a month and now she's out of the cast but still has to wear a plastic splint that can be removed. We took our kids to swim lessons and she absolutely loved it and kicked her legs like crazy in the water. Anyways, I know that it was pretty rough for them but their daughter is a happy little girl and she's so young that she doesn't really know any different!! Good luck !

I can't help you with any experience, other than to let you know that when I was a baby I had to wear one. My mom said it was a pain, but luckily I was too young to walk, so I just dealt with it. I found this info online with some tips:

Try not to worry, 3 months goes by very quickly, and it will all be over before you know it!
