I tried to go cheap for my youngest daugher's birthday, and it worked out great! I made a bunch of cupcakes, and put pink icing on them. Then I made them my centerpiece in the shape of a one on my table. It turned out SO cute. and you can make many different kinds of cupcakes. I made a special little heart cake for her.

My daughter's 1st birthday theme is Princess. So, what I'm going to do is use a cake pan for a "1" then also do a crown on top. Definately do a small cake or cupcake for the birthday girl!

I was thinking of getting a 'photo cake done for our son. You could do that when you've made it. Get a nice photo of her put on at a store that does them with a nice design around it and ribbon.

Hope she has a nice time.

if you want the design for the frog cupcake, here it is.
1)make cupcakes (pretty straight forward, put in lots of batter to make the tops big)
2)cut out a wedge shape for the mouth
3)ice the top green, leaving the mouth plain (or ice the mouth a dark colour)
4)cut mini marshmallow in half, put a chocolate chip on the sticky side of the marshmallow and then place on frog (eyes)
5) either: place a smarty in the "mouth" or place a piece of "fruit by the foot" in the mouth (bug or tongue respectively)
They are pretty easy, but i've always loved them. my mom use to make them for my parties, and now i make them for my son's parties and I always get complements on them :)

Don't use dark colors!!!!! I did a small "cars" cake for my son, and made the race track black.............he pooped dark dark green for weeks! There was a coo idea in parents (I believe) that used ice cream cones for castle towers. I thought that would be very cute for the princess of a family!

i made a 3D duck cake for my son's first, and it's not as hard as it sounds, i found the mold for it at Micheal's. then i put the duck on top of a flat heart shaped cake. it was a bit tricky to ice and then in order to cut the cake we had to decapitate the poor thing, but it looked great! you should look around and see if there are any places near you that rent out cake pans; you can get an idea from there as well (we have a toy library in our town, and then have about 60 pans, and you can rent them for $5-10)

I would do something soft, not hard icing, because they love to get their hands in there and mush it on their faces!!! maybe a lil crown cake or her favorite cartoon or toy character?

my friends did two cakes...one for the adults, and a little personal one for the baby to squish and dive into face first (lol).
