If you are breast feeding this is common...so dont worry! being a first time mom i was freaking out when my lil boy didnt have a BM for 4 days! but i was told by his doc not to worry...but if he looked like he was having trouble to use a q-tip with vasaline or his thermometer! if you are too scared to try that cause i kno i was...but its ok just stick the tip not to far and ur baby will be ok! also i was told a teaspoon of dark Karo syrup mixed in water you can put it in your babys bottle a teaspoon per 2oz of water! good luck and dont worry im sure your baby will be ok and remember mommy you are doing a great job!!! hope this helps!

Depends on the age of the baby and what you are feeding them. Strictly BF- try watching your diet to see if there is a specific food that might be triggering it. Formula fed- try talking with your Doc re switching formulas. some are more constipating than others. Solids? try switching from rice cereal to barley or oatmeal and add some apple juice to the cereal mix or some prunes as prev suggested. If you are introducing solids prior to 5 months, simply hold off until after 5 months and see if your baby's system has matured and this may help.

My daughter was constipated from week one. Her pedi told me to give her 2 oz of water. As she got older (now 4 mos) I started to give her diluted prune juice. You can also try a rectal thermometer. Be sure your baby is actually constipated though (pebbles in the diaper). Just not going for a few days does not mean the baby is constipated. You can also try a new formula if your baby is still on formula. Everything constipated my daughter except similac.

massage! facing baby, in a clockwise motion, which is the direction of his intestines,, gently gets the bowels moving! and it feels good! {use a little cornstarch if a lubracant is needed on a newborn.}try a few minutes, alternated by moving the legs in a "bicycle pattern" should get things moving! do this as often as your baby will let you! and massage the rest of her too! its a great way to bond!

My little girl was constipated from birth, unfortunatley due to medical reasons i was unable to breast feed her and after trying coloxil drops, suppositries, suger in water, etc we took her to see her peadiatrician and we found out she was protien intollerant and had to go perscription formula. So just be carefull of how long your baby has not gone to the toilet and you may need to look in to it.

How old's your baby? If they're eating baby food you might give them peaches. If they're too young for baby food (just on formula or breastmilk) you should lay the baby on their tummy and rub their lower back for a while. This always made my baby poop - it worked every time for her.

My 9 month suffers from constipation frequently. Until he was about 6 months old, the pediatrician had me put a bit of Karo dark syrup in his bottle. After 6 months, he had me give him water through out the day and use a laxative when necessary. There is a liquid glycerin suppository that worked very well.
Hope this helps!

A nurse suggested to me to put a thermometer with vaseline up his bum and she if there is any poop on it (Yellow/brown tinge to the vasaline). Since I am breastfeeding he may not need to have a BM because he may be using all of it (all natural) unlike formula which has waste because it is not all natural. If there is nothing there do not worry about it. If there is something there Little Remedies makes laxatative drops that are suppossed to be all natural. Works everytime for us.

Put the babys feet in one hand and push his/her legs up to there belly and rock them side to side, it helps the stool go through the tubes lol. That and if you rub right aroud there belly button in clockwise motion it helps the stool circulate too. I use those two things with my daughter and they always work. It helps with gas too.

I tried a tummy massage, moving clockwise from his right hip, upwards in a U shape, the direction of the poop flow. That and 2 oz of prune/apple juice, not diluted worked everything out later in the day.

My 3 1/2 month old son has problems w/constipation every once in a while and the doctor told me to use prune juice. Some people say to use sugar water but my doctor said that it can make them too loose so she doesn't recommend it. If the constipation is really bad, I give him 3 to 4 oz of the juice mixed w/an oz or 2 of water. If it starts to get better, I put 2 oz of juice in w/his formula. And sometimes after he starts to loosen up he gets really gassy so I give him some gas drops. If you have started your baby on cereal or any other solid foods, you shouldn't give your baby them until your baby has gotten better. I only give my baby formula when he is constipated because cereal seems to make it worse because it's harder to break down. Also it helps to "bicycle" their legs or make them run in the air. It helps to move everything down the intestine to push it out. Good luck!

our midwife told us that some babies don't go everyday and that if all the other things don't work below to try letting your baby soak in a warm not HOT bath and this will sometimes help get things going. Hope this helps!

If he is old enough then the prunes definitely work, if not maybe a little juice like what was suggested. If he is real young then I wouldnt worry as long as he doesnt seem to be in pain because of it, at one point when my daughter was a few weeks old she went several days without pooping and the dr said it would straighten out on its own and it did. If he seems to be uncomfortable or in pain then I would contact the dr. Good luck.

I had the same prob, my dr said NO apples, bananas, rice (replace with infant oatmeal) and give them some juice with half part of water, especially prune juice, same with the fruit, those are some natural things that really helped my son. He was so bad that one day I had to "help" him go, he was grunting and I had to gently push on either side of his bum hole, and this HUGE ball of no 2 came out he felt so much better after ward,

but like I said now he poops like a champion, also if your child is NOT iron defficient, then cut out products that have iron as that causes constipation.

At 1 month old my baby had the same problem. the one thing I found that worked was straight water or a bit of water with a tiny bit of brown sugar. I did it once and it cleared it all out.

my doc told me to give my baby gerber apple juice 2oz. a day until it straightens out when he was 3 months old. They said not to dilute it. it worked! just keep old or non special clothing off of baby until after baby poops.

My seven week old daughter has been having the same trouble as well. As long as your baby is content, he/she probably doesn't really need to have a BM. It's normal for them to go several days without a BM. My daughter's pediatrician recommended 2 things for me. The first was to try feeding her more. Since I'm breastfeeding, I expressed milk and gave her some extra in a bottle after she was content from nursing. The second was one tablespoon of full-strength prune juice. If your baby won't drink the prune juice full-strength, it should be mixed 50/50 with breastmilk or formula. After 10 days with no BM, I gave my daughter prune juice, and it worked. Another think that will also work is a suppository (they make a special size for infants), but these should not be used on a regular basis. Giving your baby extra milk or prune juice is the best option. Good luck!

I just talked to my pediatrician about the same problem. My baby is 8 months old and eats all baby foods. The told me to stop giving her rice cereal and only do oatmeal. Also try to get her to drink prune juice or have her eat prunes, if she won't eat them pears is the next best thing. They also told me to stop banana combination foods. They told me I could try 2 teas. dark karo syrup in her 4 oz bottle twice a day. I hope this helps. If your baby is younger then this maybe you should call your ped. and see what they say.

What helped my son when he was 4 months old was oatmeal cereal and then once a day I'd give him 2oz of diluted apple juice, by the 3rd day he was pooping good! As you introduce solids to your baby (when the time is right) the constipation will decrease

I wouldn't worry if it's not longer than three days. Diluted Juice can be a big help, depending on age, try pear as apple is acidic. When all else fails, soap. Shave a tiny sliver off the bar of soap and put it in the bum, then LOOK OUT!!! You may want to do it in the tub. I know it doesn't sound pleasant, but it really works.

unless your baby is on solid food, don't worry too much about it. remember, a lot of what they are eating is liquid, and theres not much in way to come out. i've read some baby's dont go for almost a week. if it's been longer, then i would take him in to see his doctor, before giving him things like juice (diluted!)

Feed them more. Our baby was 7 days old and had not pooped for four days. We were worried and we were told to take him to ER to see if he was okay by one of the public health nurses who harass you after you have a baby here where I live. Anyways, turns out he just wasn't getting enough food. Sad thing is it was the public health nurses that told us not to overfeed them. Try feeding your baby more it may help!!

How old is he/she? If old enough to have solids try prunes. Or Apple juice helps as well. Just remember to dilute it.
