Oh wow, I havnt thought about this in a while. I had issues with severe pre eclampsia so they chose to induce me on my due date as I was already in the hospital. Problem was, I wasnt even dialated 1 cm. Your going to have to excuse the "non medical" terms I may use, I do not remember what everything was for I was a tad bit loopy by the end of the ordeal.lol. In the long run what ended up working was a kind of "drip" from an IV, albeit I had to be put on and taken off of this 3 times. Every time the delivery room got busy I lost my 24/7 nurse aid watching me while on it and they had to take me off and re start it later. They also used the "tampon" method 3 times, on 3 different days but they kept on coming off when I used the washroom. In the end and on the 6th day the drip worked after they broke my water (with an extra person on my tummy to hold his head in place.) A bit of an ordeal, but hey its worth it in the long run right?

i had to be induced they used the gel on me and waited 24hours and it didnt work..then they proceeded to use ballons were they insert 1 into your cervix then 1 into your vagina and fill with sterile water.it puts pressure on your cervix to open it up..getting them filled up was extremely painful and very uncomfortable having them in..hope u wont have to have this..that was another 24 hours then i had my waters broken at 6am the next morning i got to 9 cm dialated and was rushed in for emergency c section as bub was having trouble breathing.but he was fine spent overnight in nicu..and got him the next morning

I had a balloon put in overnight, it fell out on it's own the next morning, and then they broke my water and the contractions started. I laboured about 11 hours, and then my baby boy was born.

I have been through 4 births and been induced 3 out of those 4. I must say my last child I swore up and down I wouldn't because the pain was less without the induction..but I caved in and I was hardly dilated but I was contracting. My doc put me on pitocin broke my water and let the good times roll. Every woman is different so what happens for one may not for the other your doc is the best source of judgement since they have been caring for you through out your pregnancy....Good Luck and congrats! Oh and never be ashamed to get an epidural I never had one before my 4th and boy let me tell you I was missing out..it made the whole process that much more enjoyable I must say:)

The Doctor where just in time & my husband was to late for the birth. The doctor told me that I have to be in bed for about 7 houers after the gel before I wil go into labour.Aparently 3 houers is the new record for the gel. Thanx Theresa

I was induced with my first child who is now 15 years old now. I was having strong contractions but wasn't dialating at all so they sent me home but was back the next day and they admitted me at the hospital cause the contractions were very severe and every 3 mins apart and wasn't dialating quick enough. My sons heart rate was dropping after 12 hours and they induced me but that wasn't working at all so I had a emergency c-section. By the time they got him out his heart stopped and so did mine from all the stress. Now we are healthy and just had my second child this past Aug. and very happy. I had another c-section and had a epidural also and everything went great. So good luck with yours and Congrats!!!

I was induced and not dialated at all. The first put a white tape in around my cervix (looked like white out tape lol) that didn't work then the next day the put in a gel, I then become 3 cm dialated and on the 3rd day then gave mje an IV drip with a drug in it that helps bring the labour on and help dialate the cervix. My actual labour took 9 hrs. But it was a 3 day process to get to this.

My OB had partially ruptured the membranes so I was 2cm when I was induced four days later because I was one week past my due date. They gave me cervadil to ripen my cervix (it looks like a tampon) which ultimately started my labor

Hi Penny

I was induced due to high blood pressure (not pre-eclampsia). I wasn't at all dilated when we started. They go in like when they are 'checking' to see if you have dilated...which is like searching for your spine thru your cervix - hope for a Dr with small hands!
The gel is inserted and then the hand comes back out...it tingles and is warm, but shouldn't hurt. Yes, this along can bring on labour. I had 2 lots of gel over 24hrs then they went in and broke my water, which I didn't even feel...just the uncomfortable hand insert 1st. I continued to labour all day and only dilated 3cms so had to have a c-section. The induction was horrible as they just kept turning up my contractions and I was labouring in my back and my contractions would pair up (the bastards!) Anyway, I adore my sone and would do it again twice to get him!
Good luck.

Hi Penny~ I just had a induction in September and I also had one in 2001 they were very different. With my first induction I was already in labour so they just gave pitocin and broke my water, I had her in about 2 hours. With my last baby they used cervidil. With the cervidil they put it on my cervix for 11 hours to soften it, it was removed around 8 pm and since i was having contractions all day long they gave me a sleeping pill and restarted with pitocin around 9 am, broke my water around 10 am, i delivered a healthy 9 pound little girl at 1:18 pm. I hope this gives you an idea of what will happen. As you know every doctor and hospital is different. Ask your doctor to answer all of your questions before you go in to be induced, I was suprised that they let me labour for 11 hours then put me to sleep, but i wasn't educated on the cervidil.

Hi i was induced due to high blood pressure and was nowhere ready when they strted at 3 days past. They put a little tampon thing up witch is simaler to the gel left me for 24 hours i brought me to 3 cenemeters without me really even noticing the contractions then when they took it out they left me couse they were two buisy to deal with me unless my body took over on its own so the next day at 11:30am they brock my water and just hooked me straight up to the pitosen (sp) doc said lets not waist time. I gave birth to my daughter at 3:30pm so 4 hours from when they broke my waters but 2 from when my contractions started.

Hi I was induced after 11 days late. Only 1cm dilated but baby became distressed and had to have emergency c section. But basically the prostaglandin in the gel stimulates the dilation process by ripening the cervix and generally most women are dilated enough for labour to begin.

Well most doctors will not induce you if you are not starting to dialate unless theres a reason. I was 2 cm when i went in to get induced and they broke my water first and waited for two hours to see if that would put me in labor and it didn't so they did the platosin which that worked for me.

I was induced as I had tested positive for group b strep, which could carry to the baby once my waters had broken & possibly give bub menangitis. I had the drip in my arm which the Dr could control the strength of. I've compared stories with friends that have had the gel, & I think the drip of oxytocin is better- it seemed to get it going quicker, & for me- my opinion was the quicker it gets going then the quicker it's over. Good luck!

[deleted account]

Penny I was induced with all 3 of my children. The first I was dialated 4cm and the other 2 I went in the night before. At midnight for my second they put in the gel and then I went to sleep. They put on more gel a 6am and then I began to dialate. at 830am I was 4cm so they broke my waters then a midday I was induced. The third was similar, 3am for gels, I was dialated 4cm at 9am, broke my waters and then left to do my own thing for hours, 2pm finally induced. So it can be a long wait after th gels, it's just depends on how your body reacts.

i was set up to be induced. & my water ended up breakin on its own a few days before my induction date. when i arrived at the hospital i had not dialated. they started me on pitocin & it took roughly 17 hrs before i had him it wasnt a bad experience. a few people i know who had been induced had to have the membranes stripped to help dialation. & some had to have the whole 9 yards with the water being broken & the pitocin. so it all really depends.

I was induced with my 3 children. My obs. first put the gel on my cervix and that was enough to get things going. It worked quite quickly so I didn't need the drip. I was only 35 weeks with my last baby and was only in labour for 1 and a 1/2 hours.
Highly recommend the gel.

When I got induced I was only like a 1.5cm dialated. They soley administered Pitocen and I dialated naturally... I didnt get my epidural until about 3.5-4 hrs after they started the Pitocen and everything proceded great! I started the Pitocen at approx 5am and had my Epi at 845ish and Delivered at 114pm. It was a beautiful experience! The best thing I can reccomend is keep a positive frame of mind and tell yourself everything will work out just as it should! And as hard as it is dont stress... Just like with your period your preproductive organs spaz when you start stressing so take a hot shower and give yourself a good pep talk the night before, and make sure you have good positive support system in place! Everything will work out in the end! Good luck and stay POSITIVE!!! Just keep thinking about that amazing little person you are about to meet!

Cervadil and pitocin are the most common forms of induction. There are many other options including some natural forms liek breast stimulation. Pitocin is a synthetic hormone that mimics the natural hormone oxytocin responsible for uterine contractions and dilation. Cervadil is a drug that helps the cervix effeace or thin and shorten.

Both are safe if used properly. There are risks because this is a man made process. These risks include tearing, c-section and hemmorhage. I would discuss these in full with your doctor and only sign a consent if you know what you are signing and feel comfortable with it. As an RN, I appreciate when patients ask questions because I know they undertsand.

Hey Penny!! I was induced. But when I got to the hospital I was already 2cm dilated and 90% effaced! But, they still used cervadil on me. My problem was I had been contracting regularly for about a week, so the cervadil put me in full blown labor, they had to remove it because my contractions were a minute apart. But it's not bad. It was a bit uncomfortable when they placed it, but it's supposed to stay in overnight, then they remove it and start pitocin. At least, that's what the doctor explained to me! Hope this helps!!

They typically use a synthetic prostaglandin like cytotech or cervadil. Some are administered by mouth or actually vaginally next to cervix. I was given the pill cytotech. It worked really great. My labor happened really quickly.

I was induced early, but only because my doctor didn't believe that my daughter was going to be a big baby and moved my due date up.... Needless to say, she wasn't ready to come out! I was only dilated a fingertip (I had been that way for 3 weeks) when I went into the hospital on inducement day. They gave me pitocin and the contractions that resulted from that helped dilate me... It took 23 hours for my daughter to finally start crowning! I didn't get to use a gel or pills the night before... I just went in and got the pitocin straight away... to try to get the ball rolling a little faster, they broke my water at 2 cm (about 7 hours into it), but wound up having to inject more fluid back into me because it was causign stress to the baby (again, she wasn't ready to come out!)... Don't want to freak you out... it wasn't too bad... After all was said and done it only took 20 minutes to push her out and only 4 contractions... Good luck to you!

With my 2nd child I was also induced. This time they broke my water and made me walk around for a few hours.

I was induced and i wasn't dilated at all. They inserted a pill in my cervix its call a cervadill. All it does is soften the cervix. Then they start the Patosin (spelling) and then you dilate on your own from there. After they inserted the pill I dilated to one in a half hour. Hope this helps.

I've been induced twice and was not dilated either time. The potacin drip that I was hooked to did the work of dilating. But my sister in law had the gel used on her one time it didn't seem to work as well as the potacin does. It also depends on what # child this is for you. My fourth and fifth are the ones that the potacin drip were used and they worked in less than 6 hours.

I was not going into labor at all. No effacing, no dialating and here I am checking into birth center at 42 weeks. Nothing wrong with pregnancy, low risk, went through stress tests, this baby was not coming. They tried to induce but they couldn't even break my waters. They started pit on day 1, maxed dosage and no progress. Day 2 we got lucky and there was just enough room inside to break my waters. Then more pit. After 2 days of pit labor and could not receive any more pit BY LAW, I stalled at 5 cm. I was ready to walk down to the OR and ask for my c-section myself. No one should be piosoned as much as I was. That much pit overdose stretched my recovery time from the normal 6 weeks to a staggering 10 weeks. Not that doctors are bad at what they do, but don't ever follow their orders with out questioning. Do not let them pump synthasized hormones into your body. You have more power over your delivery than you realize. With my next baby come March 2010, I am skipping all the pit. If I don't go into labor on my own by due date, I am asking for my c-section. Having skipped all the pit AND all the pain drugs along with it, 6 weeks recovery will be cake compared to my 10 week recovery the first time around.

When I was induced they didn't even bother with the gel... they put me on an oxytocin drip immediately. I was 3 cm dilated. I think the reason they didn't bother with the gel is I was already 8 days late and they wanted to get baby out. I have heard women first being treated with the gel before the drip and with most labour does start. If it doesn't start with the gel within a few hours they will then put you on the drip to really get things moving. Good luck!!

I am a labor and delivery nurse. When a mom is not dialated we will use a prostin gel to soften the cervix. Sometime the gel will put you into labor. It could be anywhere from 1-4 doses to do it though. If the gell has softened your cervix then they could start pitocin or break your water depending how low the baby is and if the head is applied to the cervix. Since this is your second pregnancy then the induction should work. Just be prepared it may take up to 3 days to work. Any other questions let me know!

I was induced on a stress test visit because my baby was quite small for gestational age (something ended up being wrong with the development of the placenta - baby is fine). I don't what all they used, they inserted something and also used gel on the cervix, along with an IV of pitocin. It was supposed to take up to two days until anything happened, and a couple of hours later I was having terrible contractions, another couple of hours AFTER I was finally able to convince the overnight nurse that YES it DID work that fast for me even though she was sure it shouldn't and had shot me with morphine (which did not help at that point) she called a doctor and I was immediately moved into the delivery room and finally allowed to call my husband at 3 in the morning, and 3 hours later we had a baby. So from about 12 hours after I GOT to the hospital and was induced I had the baby =) Although according to the hospital it doesn't usually happen that way. (Makes me worry about the next one if I am not induced, as I've already had a baby but didn't get to experience my water breaking, or any light contractions to let me know anything was happening - I am pregnant again and feel like a first time mom anticipating how I will be able to tell when I go into early labor)

hi, i was enduced due to high blood pressure, so i was not at all dialated. They give u this gell the night before to soften your cervix, it can cause mild contractions, in my case ir did. then the next morning about 5 am, they give u patoson (not sure how thats spelled) through an iv, its a homone that tells you to contract, and the stronger the contractions get, the more you dialate.

[deleted account]

I've heard some not so good things about the stuff they put actually on y our cervix..I was induced and was only 1 cm..and they actually seperated my membrane and sent me walking around town waiting for something to happen..and when it didn't I went into the hospital and they broke my water..by them I was only about 2 cm..and we waited some more..but nothing ever happened..so then the pitosin..which oh boy them we were on our way..still my one natural birth w/ no interference was SO much easier on my body than the induction.

My Dr. decided to induce my labor cause I was a week over due. They give me petosum (I don't know how it was spelled) to help with the contraction. It took me hours before I gave birth, they were even thinking of putting some kind of gel overnight to help. If my baby was 20 minutes late I would go on an emergency C-section. Thankfully, after a lot of pain he came out as healthy as he could be.
