my 8 month old son has developed a hernia in his belly button... the doctor tells me he is not in pain and not much to be concerned about and he should grow out of it by the time he is 1 or 2... just wondering if anyone else went through the same thing and what did they do for their babies?

My son, who was born prem, developed one. It gave me a heck of a fright! They told me the same thing; that it wasn't painful for him and that it would disappear of its own accord. Sure enough it did...

Apparently boys stomach muscles are not as good as girls, as babies, so boys often end up with one for a while until their muscles strengthen.
My son had his for about 3 months or so but now it has totally gone :)

My son developed a herniated belly button at about 4 weeks. I was worried about it but my doctor also said not to worry it would fix itself. I wish I knew how long it took but it did indeed fix itself. Only thing is, he's got an outty which we knew would occur (and this is not a bad thing AT ALL, just that this was the outcome. It actually looks like a cabbage patch doll's belly button(if they are still made the same way), you know, the ones with the fabric bodies and plastic belly buttons=) ).

My sister also had a herniated belly button at about the age of 2 (17 years ago)but she had a different outcome. One day it turned purple and she was in major pain so they had to do surgery. I don't even know if it was invasive but she never even had a scar and her belly button has looked perfectly normal since then. My son's doctor actually said she's seen many herniated belly buttons and they've all fixed themselves but one in all her years of practicing (although I wish I knew how long she had been practicing...hmm). Either way, don't worry unless it starts to bother him and you will know if that's the case :) Good luck!

My daughter who is now 2 was born with one. It hasn't healed yet but looks smaller than it did when she was 1. Her MD checks it at every well baby visit & says that as long as it isn't bothering her then it's fine! Good Luck!

Hi. My son developed the same prob by about 10 weeks. The Doctor said that they won't operate in the UK under 2 yrs old. Therefore if it's still a problem at that age, you need to get ur baby referred. However my son's has reverted to normal ( but not a proper 'innie') So I am hoping that he won't need surgery. Although I had a hernia, and they operated when I was 3. Don't remember a thing about it but have a slight scar under my belly button! Hope this helps x

My daughter has had one since birth, doc said they don't do anything with them (surgery) until after they are 4years old, that's if it hasn't fixed itself by then!
My little brother also had one and it went away by itself!
So i'm not to worried about my daughters!

my ababy girl was born with one, the doc says it should heal, if not we are looking at surgery later on. She is happy and healthy, so I do not worry much about it and just hope it heals by her 1st bday
