my 3 week old son has started fussing whenever i try to put him on his back to go to sleep. he only sleeps about 30 min whenever he is on his back. i know the doctors tell you that putting babies on thier bellys is dangerous, but thats the only way he will rest. so is it really that bad to let him sleep on his belly??

my 3 week old does the same at night, but i think its because he sleeps all day,so he has to be awake at sometime..my son wont sleep in his bassinet at all..i think its because its flat and seems too big for him. he sleeps in a cute reclining eddie bauer bouncy seat thing.i do however have to look into getting a wedge because I am sick of sleeping on the couch..lol

our son had acid reflux... we had the same problem. Do not put him on his tummy ... the risk isn't worth it. In our case, when he layed down, the acid would roll in his throat and burn it. I wouldn't want to lay down either. Ask your doctor. We bought a wedge for his bassinet / crib that elevates his head and put him between a positioner so he would roll. He is also on Zantac.

I would suggest proping him on his side it helped my son. Either with foam thing someone else mentioned or even rolled up blanket just so he is not flat.

Apparently there is a greater risk of SIDS when babies are placed on their belly to sleep... however, when I was a baby the advice to parents was that babies must be placed on their front for sleep, and plenty of people in my generation survived! My first baby only wanted to sleep on her front and my second baby always used to sleep on her side (now she moves around and sleeps in all sorts of strange positions).

If your baby is sleeping on a "breathable" mattress it's probably okay, and once your baby can turn over it doesn't matter so much. If you're nervous about it you should probably just wait until he can turn over.

maybe he's gassy- have you tried using the little foam pads that are supposed to prevent the baby from rolling to prop him on his left side? My son was gassy/colicky and this seemed to help some.
