I had an episiotomy with my first. He was stuck and they needed to use the vaccumm to get him out. I was sore for about 1-2 wks after. With my second I did not have an episiotomy and tore just a little bit. Ironically she was my bigger baby and almost flew out. With my second I was walking around and felt pretty good the next day. It did not take me long to recover from her birth. I actually had to keep telling myself to take it easy because I was feeling so good and did not want to overdo it and set myself backwards. For the birth experience I did not notice any additional pain or problems during my second delivery due to the episiotomy with my first. I am not opposed to getting an episiotomy if I need one, but if there is no need for one I would prefer to not get one. I healed faster and better with just tearing.

I was taught in prenatal class that episiotomies can cause tears. I had an episiotomy and a second degree tear with my first one. That was because she went into fetal distress. I have had three more and I never had an episiotomy or stitches with them. However, I did do prenatal perineal massage starting in the 34th week of pregnancy. I think it made a difference. I was not even sore after my last one.

I had an episiotomy with all 3 of my children. I liked it because I didnt have to worry about tearing and it seems to heal better and faster.

I tore the first time (awfull, painful, hellish) and asked the doctor essentially the same question. He said chances are if you tore or had an episiotomy before they will try to give you one again. I would have had one, except there was literally no time, when the doc showed up my lo had allready crowned. :) God knows, it can't hurt anymore the second time around, right?
Congrats and good luck!
