I am breastfeeding my 2 1/2 week old baby. I am having quite a bit of pain in one of my nipples in particular. The nurse (when we were still in the hospital) had said I had a bit of a blister from milk that was trapped in a spot and that it was fairly normal. I have done everything they told me to do (lanolin, soothies, airdrying...), the problem cleared up but now I am having trouble again. It hurts even when she is not eating! Anyone have any tips or advice? I don't want to stop nursing yet, but I can't go on like this much longer!

Call Renee Hefti-Graham (she sooo needs to start paying me for this lol) 604 733 6359

This woman is a life saver; she's a nurse and lactation consultant, she pretty much saved me from quitting breastfeeding. In 2 hours everything changed. she's sweet, warm and very helpful (kinda like a grandma would be- she awesome!)

if her number doesn't work, google her, I used her 2yrs ago and i am still nursing thanks to her.

-ps i have had mastitis 2twice from having clogged ducts, so don't leave it too late, the pain is ridiculous.

Oh and she does home visits

good luck

Your sore nipple might be more pronounced than the other which makes it really painful, or the blister you had did not heal up properly, or you may be getting a mastitis infection. See your doctor about it, especially if you start feeling feverish. Ask him/her to refer you to a specialist - i wish i thought of it when it happened to me. I had the same problem, it felt like 20,000 knives were hacking at my nipple, and the nerves connecting to it, every time my daughter had a feed. I put up with the pain for 5 weeks (using many different brands of nipple shields which were expensive and horrible because they made my daughter swallow alot of air and she found it hard to suck milk out) before putting her on formula - when i saw my doctor he didnt help much. My problem was the mastitis i had after 2 weeks of perfect breastfeeding did not heal up properly and the tissues were damaged. See someone asap you don't have to put up with the pain, your baby feels what you feel. If you switch to formula don't feel terrible, your bubba had the colostrum, the most important bit. All the best =)

Can you feel any lumps or bumps around the pain? Is it localized or just a general all over the breast pain. If there are any lumps it could be a plugged duct in which case heat, lots of massage and lots of nursing can help work it out.

What kind of pain are you experiencing? Thrush may also be something to look into. Often with thrush you'll see redness on the breast and kind of a burning feeling in your breast. The baby *may* have a white mouth but babies often don't show symptoms.
