Bumbo Baby Seat- Good or Bad?

[deleted account] ( 84 moms have responded )

Anyone have a Bumbo and would you recommend it? At what age did you start using it? My son is 7 weeks and can hold his head up really well. We are thinking of getting one, but don't want to waste the money on another useless baby item. What is the Bumbo age recommendation? Appreciate honest feedback.

It's a great idea and I love the shape and all, but it's too small for the average sized baby! I bought one for my daughter when she was like 4 months and was so sad, because I had to return it. :(

[deleted account]

I had 2 preemies they were 10 months apart both had hypotonia which had a form of low muscle tone. with out that seat both of my babies would not have been able to sit on their own. We did the bobby which they would end up laying like 2 rag dolls which would break my heart and any thing else we though would help to support just wasn't helping until their teachers and therapist gave us those and they were amazing. But that is just my point of view I know other moms have their own.

Just a quick note.. Do not use this on elevated areas.. It states this on the bumbo chair box!

borrowed on from a family member used it a couple of times but haven't used it for a while as my son is big for his age and very strong he kept arching his back and pushing himself upwards was scard he'd flip out so for me didn't really like it.

I got one for my daughter and she loved it, she was in it til bout 9 months old cos her legs were a bit chubby, but was worth it as it gave her the correct position to sit in and helps when u need to feed them.

I put my two month old in hers today, she has had amazing head control since birth, and she loved it!!! She sat there and just smiled and smiled at me. It gave me time to put my makeup on before play group!!!

Yes its worth it! I got one when my baby was three months. He could see what his big brother was doing or me working in the kitchen. He's seven months now and I still use it. I usually bring it with me to bday parties and stuff so I have a high chair to feed him in :) I say go for it!

Love it! Still use it at 8 months. But, the tray was a waste of money for us because our baby is large and we could not get him in and out of the seat with the tray attached. His thighs are big and he gets stuck, so we call him "Bumbo butt"!

I'm not sure on the age recommendation for the Bumbo but I'd say as soon as they can hold their heads up.

my son loves his bumbo- he has used it since he could hold his head up, it was great to use when I started him on cereal and solids, now he uses his highchair for each meal, and sometimes will sit in his bumbo and play:)

love love love. We started using it when he was about 4 months. It has helped with his back muscles. He is 7 months now and we use it everyonce and a while, hes pretty much sitting on his own. but its good to use.

[deleted account]

We didn't find much use for it. My baby neither liked it nor disliked it. Luckily we got it as a gift so we didn't feel like we wasted our money. Our friends babies use it when they come over.

My friends in my mums group bought bumbos but I never, I used to sit my boy on his small wiggles couch with his toys and he learnt to sit up unsupported very fast. My friends bought theirs at 4 months of age, I don't reckon they need it they should learn to sit up by themselves to help build strength and balance. My son was like yours he could hold his head up from a very young age he is really strong

LOVED my Bumbo. My little girl is active and she could kick and squirm in without falling out. She was sitting up at 4 months, and I really think the Bumbo helped her do that. Once her legs were long enough to touch the floor, she could push up and turn her body to get out. Maybe most babies don't figure that out (mine doesn't know the meaning of the word "still"), but it was safe and convenient. Plus, she loved being able to sit up and look around.

My son loved his but he only got to use it until he was about 6 months because he's legs got to chunky to fit in the sit and they started to cut of the circulation so he didn't get to use it long so we just bought like a booster sit which is even better because not only can you use it to eat but you can bring it outside or anywhere and put the tray on it and through toys up there for him to play with which you can't do with the bumbo sit!

i have both! i liked the bumbo seat better while my son was smaller, and then when he outgrew it we got the booster seat, and it works quite nicely  :)

i have twin boys and bumbo seats are the best ever. i didn't get mine until they were 5 moths, but i know of ppl using them much earlier. they are super-convenient for feeding and help build core strength (one of my boys had abdominal surgery and had problems with this) which is why we got it.

I wouldn't recommend putting him in the bumbo at age 7 weeks, i think that's still a little young, but we started putting Mason in his at right around 3 months.....He is almost 8 months now and we take it with us when we go out to eat so we don't have to put him in the nasty highchairs....

i went in search of a bumbo today and was shocked at the cost....wow....the ones i found were all about $50. I found one through the military px store online for $30 with my military discount...but holy moly :)

In regards to the BUMBO brand, Walmart has them for 38$. I visited several walmarts and they all had them for the same price.  Walmart.com might have them listed. You can buy them on ebay also, I paid 29$ (that included shipping). Target and BabiesRus also have them for around the same price. Target.com and Babiesrus.com should list them.

A company called Prince Lionheart, i believe that's the name, also makes a baby seat similar to the bumbo. It is rather expensive and it does the exact same thing.

Also, online on Walmart sometimes, and more often than not at Babiesrus.com, items are cheaper than they are in-store. Just a tip, because I have expensive taste (says my husband) so we buy off babiesrus.com rather than in-store and actually save a considerable amount. :)

We don't have one but my friends do for their little boy. He loves it and when they are small I guess you can put the whold thing on a bench or table top so they can see what's happening in the kitchen, etc. I think when they get taller, that's not so good but it gives the little one somewhere to sit. Just remember when they are little and their bones are forming they need to lay on their front and back too so it might not be great for long periods of time. Swings are great, too if you're looking for ways to keep bubs amused and safe.

We use ours a lot. My daughter is 6 months old now and we got the tray as well and use it instead of a high chair. We started using it at about 2 months. I really like it during meal time. We just put the Bumbo on the table. That way she is at eye level with us and my husband and I can sit and enjoy a meal together.

It depends on the child though, I have friends that didn't find their's useful. I suggest borrowing one from a friend for a week before buying and then decide. Good Luck.

I have heard they are not good for their development. they support them in a way that does not strengthen their muscles. i would not reccomend using one very often. i was registered for ome until a child develpment specialist told me i should take it off my registry.

I got one with my ODS and he sat in it maybe once, so I returned it. Then I bought one for YDS when he was around 3 months since he loves to sit upright. He doesn't really like it that much. I think its because he's got some chunky little legs and they get stuck when I'm taking him out, lol. I haven't tried it in a while, but am going to again now that he can sit up so much easier. But, its not going unused, my older son loves to sit in it now!!!

My little one (4mnths) loves hers, she was a bit unsure at first about 8wks I think, but loves being able to sit on the table whilst me and her dad eat dinner! My MIL brought us one but I was going to buy one anyway as its so handy. Its also great for dumping in the car and taking to the in-laws so I can feed her and she can sit up there, rather than lumping our too big highchair around.

My second child had a bumbo and WE LOVED IT!! Seemed like she sat up earlier and made her stronger plus she felt big like her big brother! I'm not for sure the recommended age and can't exactly remember what time I put my daughter in it but I believe it was about two months. When she could hold her head up well. I started for just a little bit at a time to work her neck muscles and then when she got used to it after a while I'd let her stay in there longer!! But I never had any problems? Just had to watch her REAL good for a while to make sure her head didn't get tired!

Hi, just an idea but the bumbo seat hasn't been around for long, and hasn't been tested to show if it causes problems later in life. One reason babies don't sit up from an early age is because their bones and muscles aren't ready for them too. I don't think its a good idea to make their tiny bodies sit and put this added strain on their backs. This is just my opinion and just wanted to throw it in the mix there lol :-) xx

I think they are a great idea as you can just put them in it anytime anywhere if you need your hands free...but my daughter is nearly 4 months old and has figured out how to get one foot inside the seat part and push up so she can get out (I can't take my eyes off her when she is in it) she is only little 12lb 3oz so might have to wait till shes abit bigger and won't be able to move in it!
