I think it depends on what you are looking for. For some yes it might be a waste of time for others no it can be time well spent. If you are a person that does a lot of research online then some of the information about meds., positions, and even newborn care you may already know. If you are planning on having a medicated birth then the breathing and calming parts may not interest you so much. I know for me I really apperciated the newborn care part. I had babysat for many many years prior to having my first, but never were the kids 1,2,3 days old. I also apperciated the breathing and calming sections. Even though I did not do it very well with my first I was glad I had learned it and could use it. With my second and third labors I really used it and both were unmedicated deliveries. I was able to feel like I was in control and could prepare myself (as much as you can for a labor) prior to going into labor, so I knew how and what I was going to need to help me get through the pain. So for me the classes were very helpful. I took the main class with my first. My second a took the refresher course, and the third I read through the books I had received at both classes and practiced my breathing each night that last month of pregnancy.

They are a waste of time. I went to one class, maybe 2 then stopped going. It was information I already knew and all it was doing was scaring me. I decided I would just take it as it comes. It was informative about birthing options. If you are one who wants to create a birth plan, but otherwise if you were like me and just planned to take it as it comes then really there is no point.
