Circumcision....buried penis?

We just had our son circumcised and went to Doctors for follow-up visit today. His penis was "buried" and doctor pushed the area behind the penis to expose the head as it was buried inside. She told us to ensure penis head is out when changing diaper. When we got home the penis head retracted back inside. We have been doing what the doctor said but it keeps going back inside. Is it normal for this to happen after circumcision? Has this happened to anyone before?

It's very normal for the skin to fold back over the head of the penis, it's referred to as "puppy fat" and once they start to walk and run around they lose the puppy fat down there which causes the skin to fold back over. I had this happen to my son, where the skin looked like it had re-adhered back onto the head of the penis and I couldn't see the ridge anymore. I took him back to where he was circumcised and they said it was quite normal for it to do this in the chubbier babies. He just pulled back the skin firmly and I was able to see the ridge again ( dr said it is just like peeling off a bandaid and doesn't hurt them to much when doing this). He told me to apply Vaseline twice a day for a week and if it was to happen again not to worry cause when they get older and start to play with there penis and explore down there as toddlers do, that smega will build up around the ridge of the penis and it will come away itself. Hope all this makes sense

I think you can goggle "HIDDEN PENIS" and you will see that it is a normal condition... it will change as his penis grows

I tried to find pictures of babys after circumcision was healed but couldnt see how it will look and i have never seen a circumcised boy with an erection on the internet. Can you please give me some advice? thank you..Benjy

My son has what I like to call an "innie". The reason is because he has an extra fat pad in his genital area which causes his penis to become somewhat buried. It is totally fine and will start to pop out as he slims down. This can also happen to overweight boys and men. I just took my son to the doctor for his 18 month checkup and I was worried about his penis because it seemed really small to me. I asked the doctor about it and he said that after he was circumsized I didn't use vaseline like I was supposed to and, because it's an innie, when the skin was healing it re-adhered to the head of his penis. So, the doctor manually pulled back the skin. Boy was my guy ever more pissed! He was bleeding and screaming. The doctor acted like it was totally ok though and he said just to keep putting vaseline on it at every diaper change for two weeks. I hate that he had to go through pain but I'm glad that it's better now. If I would have waited any longer then he would have had to been circumsized again. :( What makes me mad though, is that he has been to how many doctors since he was born for checkups and not a single one noticed it?

I worry this will happen when our son is circumcised. My husband showed me pictures of men with the skin stuck because of circumcision. I am Thai and have only seen my husband with circumcision. I hope you can give me some advice..thank Benjy

Brenda, We had our appt today and the Dr said Riley's penis had a little adhesion. She was pulling it and rubbing it a bit to expose the head more. I was so happy when I was able to see the ridge cuz I kept on thinking he needed to be re-circumsized. She told us to put polysporin and vaseline so it doesn't re-adhere again. Once again, thank-you for posting your experience with your son's pee pee. Now we have to wait for Riley to lose his fat pad so it's not buried anymore.

Yes, I was given instructions to put vaseline on it at every diaper change for two weeks. It has been one week today and it seems to be healing really well. I'm glad to help any way I can. I know it is a worrisome ordeal. Definitely keep me posted. I wish you and little Riley the best of luck. :)

Hi Brenda, I'm glad your sons penis is normal now. Do you still have to push it out and vaseline it? I made an appt today to go back and see the Dr. who did the circumcision after I read you post yesterday. Thank-you so much for posting and sharing your experience as well as giving me the link with more information. I hope that Riley's penis will be okay. I'll keep you posted after the appt on Monday.

Hi Cathy! I know how you feel. I couldn't see the ridge around the head either just the tip of it was exposed. But, now it's totally normal. The doctor didn't freeze it or numb it or anything. Just pulled it down pretty hard with his fingers. Here's a link that might help with some of your questions: http://life.familyeducation.com/baby/med...

I am concerned about my son's penis. It doesn't look like a circumsized penis. Maybe it started to re-ahered to the head of his penis like your son Brenda? When the Dr checked it she said it was fine and my family Dr. said the same thing but it just doesn't look right to me. I don't see the ridge around the head. Brenda, when they manually pulled back the skin, did they freeze the area? I'm so scared for my little son. After reading your post I think I better go back to the Dr who did the circumcision. I hope your little guy is feeling better and glad it's better now. Same with me here, I kept asking the nurses when I get his vaccination or my family Dr for his checkups and they kept saying its okay but it just doesn't look right. My sister and BIL said same thing.

Thank-you everyone for your responses. I was getting concerned as it kept popping back in after we pushed to expose the head. I will continue on pushing back and putting vaseline at every diaper change. Did this happen to your sons right after circumcision or awhile after? My son gained a bit of weight since he was born. His birth weight 7 lbs 10 oz and at 4 weeks he was 10lbs 11 oz.

My son is now 28 mo. and his penis still does the same thing. My dr. also said it was because he was a big boy (40 lbs). He is getting taller and not gaining weight so I can tell his has gotten better. I definitely recommend pushing back and vaseline at every diaper change. If not it will grow back over and you will either have to peel it back (we've had to do it about 4 times.....not fun, especially the older and stronger he gets) or have him recircumsized if it gets too bad. My Aunt told me her son had the same problem until my cousin was around 3 so I am hoping that my sons will get better soon. We still vaseline at least once day if not more. Good Luck!! :)

first son no, second son yes. i used a TON of vasaline with each diaper. i'd do it every other diaper or so to pull it back. if you don't it might heal over again... which wouldn't be fun. but you can supposedly 'pop' it back out if that happens. it's common, just keep pulling it out and slather on the goop.

My son is just about 8 months now and his penis does that same thing Jodi described...doc said it's cause he is a lil plump so it wants to retract in i just remmber to pull it back at each diaper change and clean it

Yea, that sounds similar to what my sons penis is like. With his you can still see the head of his penis but it's almost like they only did a 'half' circumcision. Sometimes the skin hides a lil more than other times but for the most part the head of his penis is 90% visible. And I can pull the skin back over his penis like a circumcised penis but it just folds back over. My doctors have said his penis looks normal and it works just fine (as far as I can tell - he pee's properly) and we just clean it every diaper change.
