I just recently started my daughter on rice cereal..about a week ago. She is 5 1/2 months. I'm not sure if she is constipated or what. She hasn't went in a lil over 2 days. I've tried the massage and moving her legs. Even a little apple juice mixed with water. And i know she is very unconfortable because she tries to push, even turns red, but nothing came out. Any suggestions??

Thanks,
Jenna

Give her the gerber prune-apple juice mix. I put about 1 oz in with my daughter's 6 oz bottle of formula. Couple hours later she has a great big poop and is happy as can be.

I had my son eating oatmeal at bedtime from a spoon 1 tbsp at 2-3 weeks old--(BIG BABY -couldn't drink enough formula to keep up) did great no allergies or anything so . . . .go figure--I would be ok with cereal at 5.5 months, start veggies before fruits as you advance except for constipation--also I am not a big fan of the Karo thingy but it works--I just have seen too many babies then want the sweet all the time and resist formula thereafter especially with frequency!

2-4 bites of the baby jar prunes -NO MORE THAN THAT-you will be able to figure it our with trial and error--once things move then just keep a jar on hand!!!!

Stop feeding her rice cereal is my best suggestion!
She probably just isn't ready for it yet. Google 'baby led solids' for some thoughts on introducing family foods - most babies are ready for solids some time between 6 months and one year, and it is best to wait until they show an interest themselves - that's your cue that their bodies are ready for it. My daughter started eating solids at 8 and a half months.

The apple juice is a good thing.. try switching her rice cereal to oatmeal. Rice is a stool hardener, so is apple sauce, but apple juice is a stool softener.ry pears too if she's ready. try to avoid too much of the BRAT diet things.

I second the Karo syrup in water method. We had serious constipation issues and the few times that that didnt work our ped. recommended taking half of a suppository inserting it and waiting for the results. Between the 2 it worked every time. Try not to do either too frequently or baby can become dependent on them.

i had a similar problem with my daughter starting as soon as she was on solids and lasting til she was about 3. i found pear juice diluted about 50/50 with boiled water, and glycerine suppositories were the only things that got me through. she is now nearly five and has no trouble but only poos once every 3 days!

Switch to a little bit oatmeal..put a little in prunes or juice. Poor baby...we went through this with our son at the same age....guess it is normal.....we actually discovered it was because we switched to generic formula. good luck. Ya the Karo syrup works...if nothing else is working a suppository is great to use once to get all the backed up hard stools out! Then try prunes and the rest to keep the stool soft for a few weeks.

We had that problem at 4 months after switching to formula. When we started her on baby food, per the pediatrician, we skipped rice cereal, because it can be constipating, and started her on oatmeal instead. We now give her prunes, peaches or pears on an almost daily basis to help her go. When she gets backed up the doctor suggested giving her 1/2- 1 tsp of dark Karo syrup in an ounce or two of water. It helps pull more water into the intestines to soften the poop up for the baby. She said to stop doing that once she gets a tooth, though, because the sugar will stick to her teeth. The Karo really helped though when the constipation was bad
