i have just had my second baby and am breastfeeding and really dont like the idea of taking hormones whilst breastfeeding but after having 2 children only 16months apart im not ready to have another one. I have been considering using the mirena i just want to know if any other mummys out there have used it/are using it and how you find it.

there are still hormones in the mirena IUD (both estrogen and progesterone) but from what i've heard/read, the hormones stay more contained within the uterus compared to if you are taking oral contraceptive. Mirena will not affect milk supply, but some women are still uncomfortable with the possibility of estrogen making its way into the milk.

the paraguard IUD is made of copper, and contains no hormones what-so-ever. it can stay in place for 10 years.

the implant, implanon, is a progesterone only form of BC. it can stay in place for 3 years, i believe. it will not affect milk supply. progesterone only birth control does tend to cause weight gain in women who have a history of being overweight, and bad eating habits.

i am breastfeeding, and i use the Mirena. i had daily spotting/light period for the first 3 months, and for the past month i have been spotting/period free. my husband does tell me that sometimes he can feel the strings but they never have hurt him. i experienced no effect on my milk production, and overall i am very happy with it.

*edit* the mirena can stay in place for 5 years, and the paraguard can stay in for 10. both can be taken out when ever you decide you want more children. the implanon is inserted under the skin of your arm and can stay in for 3 years but i am not sure if it can be taken out before the 3 year mark.

We used condoms. They have no hormones and they cannot harm the baby if they fail. Did you know an IUD is an early abortion device?

I dont know that much about it but I believe it is still "taking" hormones. Isn't mirena an alternative to the implant? I thought it released progestrogen. The only non-hormone contraception I know of is IUD. But like I said I'm not the most informed person about contraception so hopefully some other mums can help. :)
