I love my cloth diapers but as I'm out of the house alot I also use disposable. I find its awkward taking around the dirty cloth ones with me in restaurants, or at a friends house. But at home they're wonderful!

I always wanted to use cloth nappies with my children but because we are on rain/tank water it just worked out easier to use disposables. It would have used too much water washing the cloth nappies and at $200 a pop to fill your tank it just wasn't worth it for us..

We use the BumGenius One Size for our daughter and they are wonderful. The covers are shaped just like a disposable and they have cloth inserts that go into a slit in the back that absorb (come with 2 different sizes). They fit babies from 7 to 35 lbs, have snaps on the front that adjust sizes. They fasten in the front with velcro and they are so simple.
I bought our from a local store, but there are numerous websites that sell them. For more info you can go to www.bumgenius.com or do a search on cloth diapers.

Cloth diapers are great - there's a whole Circle of Moms community centered around it - check it out!
For starting out with cloth, I would recommend getting a sampler package from any of the diaper websites (I got mine from nickisdiapers.com) - and then once you figure out which cover you like best you can order those.
I used disp for the first 10 days or so - baby was just too small for the cloth. Once we switched over though, I love it - you will have to do laundry and rinse the covers if baby poops on them but overall it is great! And a great way to save money!!
My favorite covers are the bummis super whisper wrap - but try a few to see what works best for you.
As for the g-diaper...I looked at it too - but they are so expensive and you have to use a "swirl stick" when you flush them - and it could clog up your home plumbing. But for outings it wouldn't be a bad bet - I still use cloth on outings and always have a few disp for backup just in case!
Good luck!

we use a brand called totsbots they are ace they are shaped exactly like a disp and fasten up with velcro so no fussy folds or pins you just stick em in the washer no need to sluice ect as bm poo is so liqued, once baby is on solids you can add a paper liner and flush that and the poo down he toilet. I like a fleece liner too as it keeps babies skin reasnobly dry between changes check them out they are expensive but no where near what you would be spending on disposables.

We tried cloth diapers but unfortunately they didn't stick with us as diapers. I liked the actual diapers, but found the diaper covers to be difficult to use and uncomfortable for my son. Maybe I just didn't get the right ones. But I think they are worth a try.
On the plus side, they were still wonderful to have around for many other uses: burp cloths, cleaning messes/spit up, I used them to cover my clothes when I was nursing and got milk all over the place, we even used them as changing pads because it didn't matter if we had any accidents, he could poop all he wanted and I'd just throw them in the basket (we had a service). They were great for that! I always keep some in my diaper bag too. Even once I decided to cancel the service, we went out and bought a couple dozen just to have around the house.
Give them a try, you can always go to disposable if they don't work for you! Good luck!
