I'm 39 weeks and due Sept. 25th. After 41 weeks, they plan to induce me. I think I want to wait a week and a half after due date before being induced. I have heard some horror stories. The only positive is that this one woman had a speedy labor in 48 hours! Mainly I heard labor is longer when you're induced, if your cervix isn't ready you will most likely have a c-section, etc. So please tell me your story (positive/negative) and how it went for you. My nurse said they would start it off w/ IV. They wouldn't break my water or strip membranes 1st.

Hello Erin My name is amber, I was induced and it went really well, if you have a good doc you should be fine, everyone is different but I was induced they started at 4a.m. and I had her at 2:15p.m, My doctor allowed me to have an epidural when they started and it went well.

I've been induced twice - and both times had babies within 12 hours. And birth in which you get a healthy baby is a good one!

i was induced. my boy was due feb. 7th and i had a little bleeding on the 11th so i went to the hosital. they decided to keep me and induce me. i have no other pregnancy to go off on, but they induced me around 9 and i got an epidural at 4pm. and gave birth and 12:58am. there were no complications and i had to push for only 30 min. i even fell asleep for two hours. from 9 to 11 pm. i did have horrible back labor, it was almost unbareable, but i didnt tear or anything. i heard that the contractions would be worse, but with an epidural you cant feel it. so if the doctors recommend it, i would do it, but it is all up to you. plus when i was THAT preggers i would have done anything to get him out.:) good luck on your decision

I was induced at 40 1/2 weeks. I was told that it would take 2 days for the induction to work because my cervix was not ready ( it was closed). That was on Wednesday...on Friday morning I showed up and my cervix was 1. They stared the Pitocin at 6 am and I had my baby boy at 3:16pm that same day. It took 9 hours total and it was a vaginal delivery. I was a labor and delivery nurse and I did see many "failed" inductions turn into C-sections. There are a lot of factors that can turn an induction into a c-section...many of which you cannont control!! Good luck to you!

for me the horror was the process of getting ready to be induced had gel applied on a sunday night next morning no better so another dose applied still no change that night so last dose applied on the tuesday and tada nothing. was going to be sent home as id had maximum dosage of gel allowed but developed a headache and as i had pre eclampsia hence the induction they decided to try a foleys catheter so wednesday afternoon in that went and i sneezed it out a couple of hours later doctor examined me the next morning and i still wasnt favourable doctor was looking more like a stunned mullet after every examination. we then got sent home to reapear the next tuesday evening wed actually gone backwards in went another round of gel at 4.30 am my waters broke naturally at 7.30am i was 3cms dilated and i had him out at 9.30am without any extra help no iv or anything poor doctor he said in the end the gel probably did nothing

I was 1cm when the started me on pitocin by IV. They did strip my membranes before that I think. It's all really foggy from the pain meds they gave me in my IV, I don't recommend you get those, go for the epidural. Sadly even though I got fully effaced and dialated, my baby was too big and turn face up so we had a c-section. Hoping to VBAC when we try for another here in a couple months.

I was induced just over 2 weeks ago. I was at 1 cm & 60% effaced. My doctor put a foley catheter in the day before to help ripen my cervix. I went in for induction at 7 am the following morning. By 7:30 they had me on an IV with Pitocin. The foley catheter had taken me to 3 cm. They broke my water at 9 am. I was on the epidural by 12, fully dilated by 2. The baby hadn't fully dropped yet so we had to wait on the pushing. I was finally able to push at 4 and by 5:14 pm my little one was born. It went really smoothly and was great. I was nervous about being induced but it turned out really well. Everyone is different. I can only recommend that you keep open lines of communication with your doctor and nurses and do only that which you are comfortable with. GOOD LUCK!

I was induced with my first and it was very painful. I had my second and third naturally and it was not nearly as painful. If you can wait go naturally. I would not let the doctor induce for his or her convenience.

I had to be induced with my son at 40 weeks because my cervix was so far back, I got the IV when we got there because I'm the type of person that would like to have it done just incase something goes wrong while i was in labor. My dr tried to soften my cervix the night before (I cant remember for the life of me what the name of it was) with a tablet on a string at the opening of my cervix and since it soften but didn't dilate me she broke my water the next morning at 9 am. She told me that it could take till the next day to have my son but at 11:05 pm he was born. The epidural at 6 cm and making it that far with out meds hurt. I almost had to have a c-section because my son was face up so I need oxygen for about the last half hour and he tore me (so i had to be cut) but other than that it was a positive experience for me. My son weight 8lbs even and was 22 inches long. My dr told me that if i had not been induced that he could have broken a few of my ribs and that he could have gained at least 3 ounces and made it so that i would have had no choice but to have a C-section. My advice (and some may think otherwise and thats fine) would be don't wait and it is scary to think about the what ifs but youre surrounded by dr that know what to do if something goes wrong. My friend waited to long to have her baby and had to have an emergency c-section and almost lost her daughter...

It was horrible. I was a week overdue, was induced on a Friday at 6:00PM, and delivered via c-section at 5:08AM Sunday morning. I also was started off with the IV. With all that being said, my baby was 9lbs1oz so I probably should have had a c-section to begin with. :) Good Luck!

I was induced 1 week early due to my Dr. going on vacation and I was considered a high risk pregnancy due to artificial insemination. I was admitted on Monday evening at 6PM and had the cervidil placed around 7PM. That was rather uncomfortable, sleeping in a labor bed with that string hanging out of me with small contractions beginning and lasting all night - nothing I couldn't handle though - they were really mild. Around 4:45AM, the RN informed me that I could removed the cervidil myself (just like a tampon) and then shower if I wanted, which I did - and if you have the option, I recommend it - it felt great! The pitocin drip began at 5:55AM (I was at 3CM) and it was very quick and my contractions came on stronger and faster - but again, nothing I couldn't handle with a little breathing. My doctor came in and broke my water around 7:25AM and from there on I progressed wonderful. I had an epidural around 8:30AM and slept until I woke up around 10:30 or so and felt a lot of pressure. I had the RN check me, and I was dilated to 9CM!! Very quick and easy! I began pushing around 11:50 and my baby boy was delivered at 12:21PM. This was my first baby and it could NOT have gone any better. Don't fret too much about it - I know I heard all the horror stories as well, but every person is different. I must say that I was really focused on having my baby - I concentrated hard on the breathing before my epidural, and when it came time to push, I really listened to the labor nurse and my OB. They guided me very well.
Good luck to you!

My lil girl will be 2 wks this friday. she was 10 days overdue, another week and they would have induced me. they told me they dont like anyone to be 2 wks over. My dr checked me the day before i went to the hospital to see how far dilated i was. i think that really helped cuz she "stripped" me while she was in there. i was 50 % effaced. intercourse ive heard helps, and ive also heard the female orgasm works even more....so idk everyone different. good luck!!!

my experience was great i had to be induce because of my blood pressure i went in on a Tuesday night they gave me the cervdil to soften the cervix and i just spent the night then they started the induction at 5am broke my water at 10am then at 5pm went in to labor and at 5:20pm my little girl was here. so i would say my was great but everybody's body is different so if your not that ready then you might have to have a c-section but i had one of those with my 2nd child (he was but first) and that not so bad either you cant feel a thing it just sounds scary but the recover is about the same. so i hope everything goes well good luck

I was induced and I did end up having to have a c-section. I really liked and trusted my doctor so while it wasn't ideal, I knew it was for the best. It wasn't that my cervix wasn't ready or anything like that. I made it to 6cm, but during one of my checks, the doctor said that my pubic bone was shaped oddly, preventing my son from getting past, and my pelvis was also really small. He never did descend and I could've pushed for hours and nothing would've happened. With my induction, they didn't start with a pit-drip. They put a gel on my cervix to get things going and broke my water. I started getting contractions right away but I was progressing really slowly so then they administered the pit-drip and I jumped from 3cm to 6cm very quickly.

I was induced at the begining of my 44th week (yes, 44). I was getting tested every day after my due date to make sure the baby was OK, and every time I went to take the stress test for the baby it was OK, so we kept on waiting. It got to the point that I couldn't stand being pregnant any more (I know it might sound harsh, but it was very hard), so I called my doctor and told him he needed to do something for me.

I went into the hospital at 7:00PM the same day because I started with labor pains on my own; however, my cervix was not thining out, so they started me with the pitocin anyway. Then the contractions started coming non-stop (because of the Pitocin). I was told by the doctor that my contractions were so painful because of the high dose of the hormone I was being given since I was already with pains but nothing was moving...anyway, fast-forward 20 hours and I am still there, with no baby and they maxed out how much hormones they could give me. The pain was so bad because the contractions were being forced by the medicine. I wanted to have a drug-free delivery so I didn't have any pain mediciation. At hour 21, the doctor had to give me a muscle relaxer because the contractions were so bad. I basically didn't have the mild contractions, I went from starting labor on my own, to the critical labor pains with nothing in between. At that point I had enough, and I told the nurse I wanted to star pushing with or without the muscle relaxer. She told me I wasn't going to be able to do anything because the drip had just started, but I told her I refused to being in labor for over 24 hours...so with the drip just starting I started pushing...at that point it took 5 minutes and the baby was born. My doctor still talks about it every time I go to his office and tells everyone that I just kicked-out my baby, LOL...

Horror story, I think not, everything was forgotten as soon as I had my baby in my arms. every second of pain was worth it...

I was induced at 38 weeks, but only because my water broke and I had not experienced any contractions. They gave me oxytocin, which started things off pretty fast (contraction every 5 minutes or so--two strong back to back, then one shorter one, then pause...) My whole labour was like this, so I opted for the epidural after 12 hours. The epidural slowed down labour considerably, so they had to increase the oxytocin. I ended up delivering after 24 hours, a labour which I believe would have been much shorter, if it weren't for the epidural. So, no, it did not slow things down--the pain medication did. Overall, it was a very tolerable experience--contractions for the oxytocin were not all that strong, and came on slowly. Although everyone's body reacts differently, I believe that you have nothing to fear :)

hold on a minute! every labours different according to the pain threshold of the mother
i was induced, my baby was back to back and wen i was pushing for 40mins i needed the metal vacum, afterwords i had 1st degree tear and needed one endless stictch, watever that means i dont know! it felt as if they were stitching me up for ages!

my labour was 13 years, i honestly didnt think it was dat bad and i was absolutely terrified, my heart nearly exploded trew my chest when i was pushung my son out, a thousand images of all the horror stories i had been told flashed trew my mind and all of a sudden it was over and i was like 'is that it?' i expected it to be soooo much worse

i actually want another baby now! u'v come this far in ur preganancy, your finally about to met your little one, ur gonna find the strenght within u to give birth and keep going when the pain gets unbearable just remeber wen u see ur babies face for the 1st time ur going to be so proud of yourself and forget the labour good luck x x

I would get them to strip your membranes FIRST. That causes the hormones to get things kicking - labour usually follows within a couple of days. That's what they did for me, and I had a natural birth, and it lasted 12 hours from beginning to end. All the best for your labour. :o)

I was induced at 11am (broke my water and started a light pitocin drip into my iv), and i was fully dilated at 3pm. I ended up with a c section because i was 9 days over due, and my son couldnt fit through my pelvis, considering I am only 5'1" and he was 9lbs 3oz and 20.5 inches long. There is only a 15% chance youll need to be induced.

But I was dilated to a 4 and 75% effaced the day i went in to be induced, which is die to having sex everyday for 2 weeks tryin to induce labor naturally. So if your in a relationship, try yo have sex all the time, it is uncomfortable but it works.

And i also think a c section isnt bad at all, I had one 10 days ago, and the only thing is my incision is sore. I dont even take pain medicine. I barely had any pain afterwards.

I was induced because I started having pregnancy induced hypertension (blood pressure). I was 38 weeks. When my doctor decided it was time, I was dilated to 1cm. When I was admitted, they put a catheter into my cervix and inflated it. This was to help stretch my cervix. It was not painful at all. Once my cervix was stretched to 4 cm, this took about 10 hours, they started the pitocin. They broke my water after about 6 hours of pitocin, but I wasn't dilating anymore then the 4cm. Once I decided to have my epidural, I really started to progress because my body was able to relax. Within 2 hours of starting the epidural, my daughter was born. In total the induction took 26 1/2 hours. All in all, it wasn't a bad experience at all.

My baby was 6 days late and boy was I ready to get it done! I had my last dr apt at 9:30am, she did a "stretch and sweep", which was really uncomfortable. It stretched my cervix from half a cm to 3cm manually. I got the patosin drip at 2:30 that afternoon and Teagan was born at 8:30pm. The contractions were really intense. They were 1 minute apart and they lasted for a minute so I wasn't really getting any breaks! It was worth it though to get her out of my belly and into my arms. Any way you break it down labour hurts, you just have to be mentally prepared and shave your legs. kidding!

Being induced was the best thing that could've happened to me! I was induced at 39 weeks because my blood pressure had spiked. Having everything happen in a controlled atmosphere like the hospital gave me HUGE peace of mind! If my water would've broke or I would've felt the heavier contractions at home, I would've been in a state of panic. I started getting the Pitocin drip around 3:30pm and had my beautiful, 8lb 2oz baby boy at 11:53pm that same evening. The nurses told me that for a first time Mom, it normally takes about 12-15 hours. We proved them wrong!

I was induced both times with pitocin. It worked about the same both times, within 24 hours I had my kids! My labor was only 20 minutes with my first and unfortunately 1.5 hours with my second. But I also had an epideral with both so that really helped too! Good luck!

With my first son I was induced because I had Preeclampsya. I was induced with pitocen but was also given magnesium to keep me from having a stroke. Unfortunately I was given one medicine to START labor and one to STOP labor lol. I went in on Thursday 7pm and had my oldest boy at 638am on Saturday. I started out with pitocen and the bulb at the same time...It was NOT comfortable but I had an awesome nurse. She told me and I quote "ride the bike" basically when a contraction comes on to move my legs like I was pedeling. It keeps the muscles from tensing too much and from being extremely painful after labor, cuz your using muscles you dont normally use. I never got the chance to have the epidural with my oldest, I went too fast near the end to recieve it, I had one shot of IV pain meds and that helped me rest alot. WIth my 2nd son I went into labor all on my own when he was a day late. I went in at 4 am and had him at 1117 am that same day, using an epidural and "riding the bike" when I needed to. Just remember pain is a part of it, but its forgotten the minute you hold your baby. Also no matter how "bad" an experience you have itll help you through your next birth. Good luck and God Bless

I had a pretty good experience for being induced. I received cervadel (however that's spelt) at 4:30 in the afternoon and by 9:00ish that night I started to get contractions. By 6:11 the next night I had my baby! I was only 1cm dialated when they induced me and all I needed was that little push I guess. I was told that they would put me on pitocin but they never needed to.. things went really quickly on their own. I had tolerable contractions from 9:00 at night till around 3 or 4 the next afternoon and then it was like bam they hit my really hard and things progressed really fast (so fast I couldn't get an epidural). They told me at the hospital that most people it takes 3 or 4 tries with the cervadel before anything happens.. but I guess it depends on the person. Good luck and remember that no matter how your labor goes you will have an amazing little baby in the end and that's all that matters!

Did you have a good /bad experience being induced?

I'm 39 weeks and due Sept. Th. They wouldn't break my water or strip membranes ST.

I was induced with my ST child on the Th of this month and I was not due till the Th. and I was only in labor for 8 hours and i pushed him out in 42 Min's. If you wait to have baby you could still have a c-section cause the baby may be to big to push out. My baby was lb 10 oz and 21 in long if I had not been induced I would of had to have a c-section! I was scared to be induced as well because of all the scary stories people would tell me. But you have to remember that no birth is the same and you could very well have a short labor or you could have a long labor as well even if you do wait and  not get induced. I STRONGLY suggest the epidural it made me sleep through my labor! Good luck!

I was induced at 41 3/7 wks with my first pregnancy, I was not dilating at all. Induction usually brings on the contractions much stronger. Initially I did not want an epidural, but after 8hrs of thinking I was dying, I begged for some pain relief. It's when they broke my water bag is when I truly thought this was the end for me. I was in labor for 19 1/2hrs. I eventually had a c-section, complications with my daughter. My sister-in-law was induced and had vaginal birth. Each case is different, so you could be induced and have vaginal birth or a c-section. The one thing I've noticed everybody saying is that the pain is a lot more intolerable than without an induction. Hope this helps you and congratulations! :)))

I let my doctor take me three days before my due date. I went in at 6 am and had got everything started by 8 am. I had my son at 6:34 pm. Nothing hurt me the only thing that took long was my son was looking to the left and until he would turn his head he would not come down anymore but other then that it was perfect.

I had a great experience. I was induced at 38 weeks. I was sick almost the whole 9 months I was pregnant and decided at 38 weeks and being 2 cm dilated that I was ready. My induction was supposed to start at 7:00 but there was an overnight emergency and my dr. didn't get there until 12. So the induction started at noon with the insertion of a pill(cervadil). Followed by another one a few hours later. It didn't really do much. They started potocin around 9:30ish and I got my epidural around 11. I had a hot spot so they uped my epidural medicine and I feel asleep for 45 mins( I only felt maybe 10 mins of pain the enitre labor process). The nurse came in b/c my monitor was acting funny. She checked me and I was "complete". I started pushing right away and had my son at 3:11am. I was told that I had a very quick labor for my first child!!! I would definitely have an induction again!!! I think everyone is different and it just depends on your body. Good Luck!!! They broke my water before they gave me the potocin

After reading the previous post I was not aware that redheads tend to have quicker births.(I'm a redhead, too)

I had a great experience....my doctor stripped my membranes and I started having some cramping a couple of days later...by the time I went into the hospital for my scheduled induction at 39 weeks, I was contracting pretty regularly on my own, but my cervix hadn't changed at all. They put cervadil on my cervix to help ripen it, broke my water at 7am and then the next morning began the pitocin. They started the pitocin at 9am and I had my daughter at 5:49pm that evening...I was really nervous and scared about it too, but it went well for me, so try to relax and just remember that they are going to do what is safest for you and your baby. Good luck and congratulations!

I was induced at 42 weeks, and it was an awful experience!! I dont mean to scare you but its the truth, i had a 47.5 hour labour which ended up in a c section. I was so exhausted,my body just was not ready to give birth, i wish i had just opted for a section in the first place because where i was so exhausted i didnt recover fron the op very well. where as when i had my second i went over due then book in for an elective section an recovered so quickly,i was walkin about within 12 hours and home in a day and a half.I hope everything goes well for you and you have a great labour

I was induced at 40 weeks. The Cervidil [put in at 6pm] started my labor a few hours after they put it in. I had trouble sleeping [due to excitement, not pain] so they gave me sleep medicine. I woke up for my water to break at 330am and I don't remember it hurting much because the sleep medicine kept me in and out but I'm assuming it was bad enough because I requested an epidural. They had to call the anesthesiologist from home. I received my epidural about 630am and slept until about 11am. Started pushing at 1130 and gave birth at 1201. She's amazing. I sometimes wish that I could have had the experience of "ITS TIME HONEY, LETS GO" but I couldn't wait for it since i had GD.

I was induced at 10:30am on Sunday the 25th with Gel. I started having period like pains at around 11:30am. At 1:30 I had the 2nd set of gel and was still only having slight pains.. at 8pm I was having more pain but was only 2cm dilated so they gave me the 3rd set of gel and broke my waters.. straight away I started having contractions. I was told labour started at 8:30pm.. by 2am I was in a lot of pain and was only 3cm dailated so they put me on the drip and gave me an epidural. At 5:30am I woke up and at 6am I started pushing. At 6:46am my baby girl was born...

I found it to be a positive experience as we ended up with our baby, but next time I really want to go into labour naturally. When you are induced your body isn't ready for labour, so it is much more painful..

I loved being induced! I was 1 week overdue so I had a scheduled induction...it was great...I got up, took a shower, ate breakfast, and strolled into the hospital. They broke my water first (which I didn't even feel) and then started me on pitocin through an iv around 8am. I was on my laptop and watching tv...didn't even feel contractions until the late morning. By 3pm I was in enough pain to get an epidural which wasn't too horrible. I started pushing at 6pm the same day and he was born (9lbs!) at 7:16pm that night. I thought being induced is great!!! Good luck!! My friend was induced two weeks ago with her second child and she had an equally great experience and her baby was born in 5 hours!!

I was induced with both of my boys. And both took less then 24 hours. it depends on the amounts of pictossin given(its through the iv), how long it takes for your cervix to soften. So all I can say is its different for every person. My water was broken at around 5 or 6 cm both times...But both times my mucus plug came out DAYSSSSSS before!
