Hi Samantha, my son had this when he was about the same age. He would be breastfeeding then bring a little up into his mouth and swallow it again. He would then go on and off the breast screaming. The paed explaining it is silent reflux - they do not vomit but just bring a bit up into their mouth and swallow it again which burns on the way down (the same as it can do with us). He said when this happens to give him small amount of mylanta (about 3 - 4 ml) and then really worked. Stopped him screaming and let him finish his feed in peace. My son also had bad colic too and had to take Donnalix drops for this. But his is now 5 & 1/2 months old and seems to be over it all.

my son is 13 weeks old and has severe acid reflux. he really doesn't throw up too bad but screams in pain with pulling his legs up then flexing them straight out... he pretty much was crying most of the day away. and as far as the nights were concerned i was sleeping in a recliner holding him, because he wouldn't sleep any other way. i was told initally that he was colicy and to go home and deal with it, but then i found a different pediatrician (who is a godsend!) he put him on prevacid 2 times a day and mylanta as needed to keep him coated when he had a flare up. he is still a little crabby sometimes, but is 99% better. if you didn't want to get a Rx i would definetly try the mylanta ( my baby weighed 10 lbs when he started on it and got 3mL)

Our 7wk old has just been put on losec, for silent reflux.

Its soooo hard to listen to him cry and watch him squirm around in pain :(

We also use the infacol drops occasionally. I dont like using them too often cause they can cause constipation, (which we found they did for our son).

I REALLY dont know about using the rice cereal for an 8wk old??

We were told to do the same for our first son but he was around 14wks. I would seriously speak to your paed or GP before continuing on with it? I might be wrong but I dont think there gut is strong enough yet to cop with digesting it??

Just my opinion........... Im rarely right though..lol

Goodluck, I hope you have found some relief and have a more settled bub

They sell infacol at most supermarkets and chemists. Its changed Mahni completely into a little angel baby so I'd really recommend it

my son has acid reflux so bad he had to be put on ranitidine. he is doing too much better with that tho. i haven't tried the rice cereal yet cuz i can't start my son on anything cuz he has a weak digestive system, but i heard that works really well. my son is still spitting up all the time so i'll have to try something different.

we have been doing the rice cereal in the bottle all day today (1/2oz) and it seemed to do the trick--she can be set down/layed down and every nap today she went down so easy--even big sleep--i feel alot better--hopefully just doing this will do the trick and she won't get constipated.

i changed formula multiple times, switching to soy helped with gas and other issues, but my daughter would scream all the time too, especially after eating, and would vomit about once a day. i was ready to kill anyone else who said "colic" to me. she didn't sleep for 3 days once...so we ended up at the hospital and she ended up on the highest dose possible of Zantac. luckily that did the trick. some kids don't respond to anything and i read about so many moms who just had to wait till they grew out of it.

if you know it's not colic, stick with your gut and fight for help for your child. we took notes for weeks, every meal, every cry, every nap until doctors had a sense of when and why she was crying. we tried every home remedy...thank god for medication.

Unless your milk is too thin breastfeeding is better for reflux.  Babies drink faster out of a bottle (and when they're hungry, so small, frequent feedings helps a lot) and then throw up.

I'm off dairy & soy & my son's been on Prevacid since he was 2 weeks old.  His is pretty severe, but we keep him still & at a 30 degree angle for half an hour after feedings & to sleep (Tucker Sling in crib on wedge) and his spit-up is barely more than "normal baby" now (we used to go through about 5 burp cloths per feeding.)

Hi we thickened my daughter's formula with a bit of rice cereal, cheep and once we found a formula she could tolerate we didn't want to change again. Have you tried various formula's? Our pediatrician had us try several until we found one that seemed to improve the reflux..If you are nursing it could be something you are eating. I hear some mom's need to go off dairy. She is needing prescription zantac and prevacid for the reflux as well. I've never heard of Gillies water but we use Gripe water on her fussier days.

My daughter is now 13 months and had GERD (which is acid reflux). To thicken formula without buying a new kind, you can add rice cereal to it. My Dr. wound up prescribing AXID to my daughter, and she was on it for about a month and then the problem was pretty much resolved. Also, sometimes when the rice is added to the bottle it can cause constipation. I did one bottle/day filled with 25% apple juice & 75% water to help loosen it up.

my daughter is almost 4 months old and she does the same thing. the paediatrician told us that she has reflux but it was mainly a wind problem so we could either get thicker formula to help with the refulx or keep using the same formula and add some infacol or brauers wind relief to help bring her wind up easier. we chose the latter (and now use infacol) and the crying and constant has stopped completely. i've also heard of people using gilles water but i'm not too sure what that is. good luck with it all!
