first time mom with feeding question

I started my 5mo son on solids about 4 weeks ago (he was exclusively breastfed prior) and he loves them. He eats like a piggy. I nurse him when he wakes up at 7am and about 1 hour later he will eat 2-3 Tbsp of cereal and 2 (icecube-sized) servings of fruit. Around lunch he takes 6+oz breastmilk from a bottle, then 2-3 servings of veggies and 1-2 fruits. He snacks on a 5-6oz breastmilk bottle mid afternoon. He eatsa 6-8oz bottle of breastmilk and then 2-3Tbsp cereal, 2 veggies and 1-2 fruits around dinnertime. Then he nurses again at bedtime which is 7pm. Amazingly, there are meals he wants more (even though between feedings he doesn't fuss that he is hungry)!

I know the cereal is important b/c of the iron in it, but I am a big fan of "eating your veggies and fruit", and I know how good the breastmilk is for him.

If he wants more, is there a better one to give him extra of? Being a first time mom, I don't want to overfeed him, but I also want to give him want he feels he wants/needs. He is big for his age - 90% for all measurements. Any thoughts would be appreciated

I would give him more milk to top up because having a variety of solids aren't all that important when he is at 5 mths and they getmost of their nutrietion from breatfeeding/bottlefeeding. It sounds like he is a good eater though!

Thanks for the thoughts. Breastmilk it is! Luckily I am a super-producer and even have leftovers each day from my pumping to freeze. He just loves to eat - has since day one.

i would recomend more milk to top him up, this is digested easier and only takes 2hrs for them to digest, at 6months my son would have 5 to 6breast feeds cereal for breakfast fruit for lunch and veggies for dinner. good luck

Wow he eats a LOT for a 5 month old! I started my son on solids around that same time and he wasn't eating anywhere near that much at 5 months :) I agree with the pp, if he's still hungry its probably best to nurse him more since at this point he'll get more nutrition from it than solids. At the same time I wouldn't feel like you're feeding him "too much"- he'll let you know if he isn't hungry and doesn't want to eat anymore.

Give him more breastmilk if he is still hungry - that should be the main food source till they are 1 :)
