I started my daughter on rice cereal when she was 5 months old but it constipated her real bad so we stopped. She is now 6 months and i started her on the veg. solids. She does very good with them! My question is, is it better to use the oatmeal then rice cereal??...or what kind of foods do u give your 6 month olds??

If she is having a problem w/constipation w/the rice cereal try barley or oats. Rice cereal is LOW in fiber. My son will be 6 months on the 10th and eats every fruit and veggie. However, we have avoided ones that would be acidy as he has reflux. He gets a tbsp of rice cereal and a tbsp of oatmeal mixed together and about 1/2 a jar to a full jar of fruit for breakfast and then the same for dinner, but with a veggie instead of a fruit. Now that you started him on purees you may be able to give him rice cereal again w/a green veggie or a "P" fruit (prunes, peaches, pears, plums). Cereal is not a necessity, more so helps with weight gain if baby needs it and is low in nutrients (other then from the formula or breast milk mixed with it).
Also, do NOT substitute a feeding of food for a bottle or breast feeding!!! You could also try and mix a little (like a tbsp) of baby juice w/the cereal.

i would skip the rice altogether. there is very little nutrition and as you experienced, it constipates. at 6 months, oatmeal is a great choice. it has fiber so it shouldn't constipate, and it tastes better.

avocado is a GREAT starter food. its super soft so you can just mash it up with a fork, it has super healthy brain-building fat and is loaded with nutrients
