My daughter use to sit with her back to the wall and start banging her head. Sometimes till it had a spot that resembled rugburn. The doctors didn't seem to think it was of any concern. We would be driving down the road and I would feel this jerking in my car, then it would dawn on me it wasn't the car acting up. She would be banging away in the back seat. It usually would happen when she was sleepy. I think it must have been soothing to her although I have no idea how it could be. She occasionally still does this and she is 12 years old now. It didn't seem to harm her in any way. She has been doing this since she was old enough to realize she could make her infant seat move by raising her head.

it's not always a phase..... lol My six year old still bangs his head on stuff, and will occasionally punch himself in the head..... explain how its just a phase, again?

My daughter does this every once in awhile. It's nothing really to worry about - it's just them exploring different things. It's a phase & it will pass, even though it looks painful.

My son used to do that when he was younger and I mean REALLY bang it hard!! We were really concerned that he would really hurt himself, but his pediatrician said it was fine and apparently A LOT of young children do it!! Just hang in there, it'll get better, but I do feel your pain... it definitely didn't sound normal to me and is very hard to watch!!!

My girl started the same thing around 9 months. I read in the What to Expect First Years , that it is common, and shows that they have rythm. My girl stopped after about a week or so,, but now she loves to shake her head from side to side, which is also common, I guess. :) I still plan to ask the doctor at our 1 year checkup.
