What dose it mean when my baby whos 2 1/2 months old keeps chomping on his hands? Is he hungry? Or just playing?

Mine does this all the time. She has a toy in her one hand, stares at it for a second, then looks at the other free hand, drops the toy and shoves her free hand in her mouth. She loves to chew on my husband and my fingers. Occassionally she'll chew on an actual teething toy but my thought is for now I'm ok with it if it's not bothering her. i figure when she gets a tooth and chomps on her hand afterwards she'll probably stop doing it :) They're just figuring out things and hands seem to be a comfort thing for them. If they're hungry they will definitly let you know. For the most part though it's either for comfort or the beginnings of teething :)

maybe you should give him something to eat? mine started on solids at 3 months maybe you should try some pureed fruits or vegies from a spoon

My son is almost 3 months old and does this all the time...right after he eats, when he's playing, when he's bored....and anything he gets his hands on go in his mouth. We think he might be starting to teeth because he always has to have something in his mough to knaw on (today he grabbed my finger and stuck it in his mouth to bite on)...anything he happens to grab goes right in his mouth. It is most likely just your baby exploring the world and learning about himself....he is going to continue to put everything in his mouth....it unfortunately a great way to spread germs, but a big part of how they learn. If he is hungry...he will get those lungs working and let you know.

Self soothing is a great thing. If they suck on their hands, you don't have to worry about giving them a pacifier all the time. My daughter will spit out her binkie and suck on her hands till she falls asleep at night. It's so much better than her crying every time she spits it out till I get up and put it back.

My 3month old does the same thing. I think he's just discovering his hands. He gets both of them in front of his face and you can almost see the wheels turning in his head trying to get them to do what he wants. When he manages to get one in his mouth, he'll get excited and kick his feet.

Mine started doing that when she was around 3 months. She was actually teething and all she wants to chew on are her hands:) She was drooling a lot as well.

My daughter is 6 wks. She does this when she's hungry, or when she wants her pacifier.
