We also subscribe to the Vicks on the feet and socks... we don't know what it does, but it always helps.

put Baby Vix vapo rub on his chest and back. And get a vix umidiier. I'd take the baby to  the doctor thoguh because when mine had a cough like that  it turned out to be Bronchitis

buy a little stand where u can put a candle under a dish(there are specially made stands for this purpose). fill the dish with a mixture of eucalyptus oil and water and light the candle. it really helped my son, he's also 5 mos and just got over a really bad cold via this method. good luck

Don't be afraid to use baby vicks (smells so nice) and also try adult vicks on the soles of his feet then put on socks. This helped mine just after she was born and was having colds from winter, we used this system and her colds (even if they had gone to her chest with yellow phlegm coming out of her nose and coughing), never lasted more than 3 days. The adult vicks is stronger but helps in the sense of baby can breathe in the menthol etc to help clear. Check with your chemist, but you may be able to get eucalyptus & menthol oil that you can put into his bath which will evaporate in the steam and he can breathe it in that way as well.

My little girl is going through the same thing. She is about to be 8 months old. Went to the doctor and they think it is viral. She is having breathing treatments with the nebulizer 4 times a day right now for 5 days. I also have one of the vicks plug-ins and that helps her through the night with the congestion she has. I do the steamy bathroom also. I breastfeed her while we are in there so she breathes through her nose. Hope he feels better soon!

I used the vapor rub and humidifier also but what made the biggest improvement is bathing him in Johnson and Johnson Vapor Bath, you will find it will all of the other baby bath products.  It is a green bottle.  My son gets deep coughs often and this helps more than anything else for him!

Cool Mist Humidifiers helped with my son. We have to run one a lot because he has bronchitis...we also used Vicks but, the cool mist always gets rid of it faster.

take him to the doctor.  This is the time of the year for RSV and it's possible he has it.  As young as he is, if it's just chest congestion, they probably won't do much as far as antibiotics, but if he is wheezing, you need to know ASAP.  The steam shower, and vicks rub work well for chest congestion, also a humidifier.  good luck!

i have a 2yr old and when he was four months old he also had a chesty cough. it had gone on for 5 weeks. in the end he wasnt breathing and it turned out to be bronchialitis.we thought he had croup. the vicks did work a little. put some on the soles of his feet before bed and put a light pair of socks on him. also the chemist sell camphor blocks. put one in a small sack and pin it to the inside of his singlets. he can wear that all day. it can all help ease the cough.

if its "chesty" try a nice steam bathroom. sit in there with him to help clear it out. If it sounds like a bark its Croup which is a viral infection still same therapy with a nice cool dose of air after the steam. its the hot and cold combo that alleviate it. good luck. The vicks do help as well. Also get a humidifier and don't turn it off. good luck!

After taking our twins boys to the doctors, and being told it was "viral" we used the Vicks VapoRub plug-ins, after the second night, the boys were much better.  I think I'll use it the next time I'm stuffed up too.  Good luck!
