How do I help my baby girl?

My daughter is six months old and has been eating solids for about a month, her poops have recently gotten more solid and she is having extreame troubles pushing them out. She doesn't sleep well at all and she's very grumpy lately. Does anyone know how I can help her? I've tried prunes, she wont eat them at all.

She is teething again and since that seems to upset her tummy, I was wondering if that could be contributing.

5mls of apple juice to 50mls of water works really well, and peaches and pears help too. Foods that are more likely to cause constipation are - sweet potato, apple, banana (there are probably more but that's all I can remember at the moment). Also try to encourage her to drink plenty of water during the day.

Carrot baby food also made my baby's stools softer. It does not have to be prunes. Once she can eat solids, fig newton cookies work too.

i was also told to use corn syrup and it works awesome. i have used it a few times for my son since he started solids. I put it in his bottle with the formula and by the next day he has passed stool.

Don't feed her Bannana's give apple juice diluted a bit, and also mix wheat germ in with her baby food it works wonders!!! Is she formula fed? If so make sure that there is not a lot of iron in it as that will constipate her. Make your own food and when you grind up fruit make sure to leave the skin on whenever possible!!! My doctor also said that you can put a tablespoon of sugar in their bottles like once a day and that makes them poop. Another very good thing is oils like Olive oil, Flax oil, Hemp seed oil. you can mix that in anything too. Also try getting a baby probiotic at your local health food store. Hope this helps.

my daughter had a big problem with constipation when we started her on solids. My health visitor told me to get an orange, squeeze it myself then dilute the juice half and half with cooled boiled water. Worked really quickly and i now have little cubes of orange juice in the freezer for future bouts.

Corn syrup in warm water can also help, thats what my aunt who is a maternity nurse had me start her on, for us it worked at 1st, but stopped working. hopefully it works better for you!

My daughter had this prpblem for 3 years. We tried taking out all the contributing things like bananas, carbs, anything thats binding, too much iron, though don't take that out cause they need them, but introduce all the berries, lots of water and fiber. If those don't work get her to the doctor to get something stronger, because if you wait like i did, you will have bigger problems. They start becoming afraid to go to the bathroom and start holding it, and then they start having accidents. I finally have her over it at 4, but it was a big struggle. But research the food that cause and those that help. Milk can also be a contributer.
I hope that helps.

When my daughter was little her dr told me to try giving her some water with a little karo syrup or brown sugar in it. She couldn't eat prunes as they would give her an awful rash every time making her even more grumpy. She water thing seemed to help a lot tho when she was little.

Thanks everyone! I put some prunes in with her cereal in the morning and now she's doing just fine. Had a big messy all over poop yesterday, lol! She's eating cereal and veggies, and she has two bottom teeth and is getting two top teeth. She's quite grumpy at times, but at least the constipation has passed. :)

she may be just teething??? my daughter gets like that when shes teething. but her poops are def more solid and it takes a little more push behind it to get it out but shes fine now... you could give some gerbers prune juice to her... they say that will work. they can have 4 oz up until they are a year old and then they can have more...i water my daughters down. As long as shes not constipated she will adjust. just takes time :)

my sister's little girl has chronic constipation. Her Ped recommended a little milk of magnesia every night and it works miracles. i use it whenever my little girl has gone longer than a day. it's natural and easy on the tummy and always works to lossen them up :)

please dont stick anything up her bottom that can do some serious damage!!!
But i'd say just cut back the rice cereal a lil bit and try to give her green beans, or peas, or applesauce. U can even mix them in with the rice cereal for some texture.. avoid juices though unless ur doc recommends otherwise

gerbers makes creamed corn in a jar, never was a fan of jarred food, always made our own, but wow does corn do wonders, whenever he was constipated Id feed him a 1/3 of the jar and by the time he was done eating he pooped... Ive sworn by it ever since

I'm not sure if you have this in the states (which I assume is where you live), but I swear by Ashton and Parsons infants' powder. It's used specifically for teething related stomach problems, and is a herbal remedy (and has been around for years apparently). You just put the powder directly onto the tongue and it seems to work quite quickly. I have been using it when required with my little boy from 6 months, and I still use it occasionally now when his teeth are bothering him. If you can get hold of it then I would definately recommend it! Other than that I would suggest giving her baby rice with some pureed apple or mashed (very ripe) banana for a few days as these are apparently one of the easiest first foods to digest. Don't give her green or unripe bananas though as this will only make things worse! Good luck!

Try room temp Prune juice. It helped my daughter a lot. I still give it to her once in a while to keep her regular. Teething does give them an upset tummy.

Dilute some apple juice. Our son got really constipated when he switched from breast milk to formula and 2oz of water with 2oz of apple juice cleared him right out.

My son used to get constipated often when he first started solids. I gave him very watered down orange juice or prune juice. But usually just an extra bottle/cup of fluids is all that is needed when a little one is constipated. Best of luck.

Should mention not to give too much Kiwifruit though and be careful re allergies. It can be similar to citrus fruit. Some children have a low tolerance for it, but if you introduce it like you would any thing else, you should be fine :)

Kiwifruit is good for loosening things up if it's available in your area.

The best thing that I found to work is to pull her feet up to her chest when you are changing her and stick a thermometer up her bottom. Not very far, but kind of work it around a little. It always worked like clockwork for my child.

Also, try taking her off of the solids for a little while. It takes some time for their little systems to get used to it. Not sure what you mean by solids. Solids as in oatmeal or solids like chicken, real fruit, etc. It may just be soon for her. We didn't go to real solids until about 9 months. Every baby is different. Does she have teeth? They really can't chew solids until they have enough teeth.

The teething could be making it worse. Are you giving her rice cereal or anything of that sort? That could bind her up as it is thicker and heavier. You can try very diluted pear or apple juice in a sippy cup though please! lol. I believe the only thing in a bottle should be milk, formula, breast milk. Also that will help getting her used to a sippy cup... if you give a baby juice or anything other then plain milk in a bottle they are more likely to be stuck on the bottle and it can cause crooked teeth and tooth decay. Plus, she is at the age where she should be comfortable using a sippy cup.

Many babies become constipated when foods are first added to their diet. The main reason for this is that the standard recommended starting foods are all constipating - rice cereal, bananas, squash, and applesauce. Why do health care professionals choose these starting foods when they know they will make most babies constipated? Good question. The truth is, there is nothing special about these foods that makes them better to start out with. Babies don't actually even need rice cereal. So, if your baby becomes constipated after starting foods, here is what you can do. Stop feeding her whatever foods you have started so far. Introduce a food that you know won't constipated her. Some good suggestions include pureed peaches, prunes, or any green vegetable. If your baby will not take these foods, or if these foods don't work well enough, try some diluted prune juice through a sippy cup. You can even offer her some water. Once baby's stools become more regular again, start adding some of those starter foods again, but in smaller amounts, and less often. You will need to determine how much of these "loosening" foods your baby needs to keep her regular.

If none of the above works I would take her to the pediatrician...

Good luck!
