It starts off very mild and slowly gets worse. My daughter started drooling more, then started yelling when she chewed on things, and has just recently developed a runny nose, coughing, a tummy ache, and just plain fussiness. Im hoping she gets hers soon so she and mommy can have a little releif. They can also develop a fever and diarieha. Most babies get their first tooth around 5-6 months.

Are they drooling a lot? Trying to chew on everything? These are two signs. I used baby oral gel and it helped.

My son started some of the sypmtoms of teething 2 months ago, he's 6mo on Dec 23 and his first tooth appeared last Monday.

Drooling, low grade fever, irratability, diaper rash, chewing on items, tugging at the ears, discomfort at bedtime***for my son he had to sleep in his car seat as lying down caused screaming fits.

Hyland's Teething tablets, Baby Motrin(for over 4mo), cold washcloth's, cold teething toy, oragel works in a pinch but only if baby will take it. We have a real neat teething toy; its made by Nuby and is a large ring with all sorts of different ridges and even easy for him to get it in his mouth when he was 4mo. You can even let him chew at a carrot...its too hard for him/her to bite through and you can see long before they are going to bite through it.

Lots and lots of drool and pretty much everything else mentioned here - gumming on toys, clothes, or their own fingers, waking up in the middle of the night for seemingly no reason (particularly if they tend to sleep through the night). We bought a package of baby Orajel for our twins which came with a daytime and a nighttime formula (they wouldn't take teething rings and gave up on binkies at about 2 months old). If your baby stops crying right after you apply the Orajel (or whatever else you choose to use), then they're probably teeth. Some babies get a fever as well, but not always - our girls never did.

If you opt to use teething rings, DON'T freeze them. Freezing causes the edges, bumps, and ridges of the toys to get ultra hard and sometimes even sharp, which can irritate baby's tender little gums. Just stick them in the fridge and let them get super cold.

Lots of dribbling, grizzly, irritable, s/he will try sucking & chewing whatever they can. You'll know when your baby is teething. Bonjela is good, gripe water is better, lemonade iceblocks, teething rings that you freeze & rusk biscuits are also helpful!

There are lots of things that are "signs" of teething that are also just common baby behavior so I think the only real way to know if they're teething is to wait for teeth to come in and then you will know that they were teething and what teething looks like for your baby. Some common signs are drooling, chewing on things, irritability, low fever. pulling on the ears.

Try non medicated relief measures first to see if your baby responds. I.E. cold washcloth, teething ring to chew on, massage their gums. If those don't seem to work then try something that only works locally for the pain like teething tablets or gel because this will mean less medication in your baby's blood stream. Good luck!
