My son is almost 15 months old and I still have not gotten my period. I breastfed exclusively until he started solid at 6 months. At 10 months, I reduced down to only 2 feeds a day. At 13 months, I reduced down to only one feed before bed. I recently have weaned him, and still no period! But my doctor said that it could take a few months after you stop breastfeeding completely for some women to get their periods back.

hm.... about 3 months after giving birth to my son. My periods are not regular tho. Prior to getting pregnant, I had a visit from my AF every 25 days. Post birth however, my AF visits willynilly. (sometimes 24, other times 26, etc - you get the picture.) My doctor said that this is not a problem but if I want to regulate my AF more - I could take some hormones. I'm thinking about it and might do it in the future.

I bled after my c-section for almost 6 weeks. Then my period came 2 weeks later and was super bad for 3 days. Breastfeeding didn't work out for me so I stopped a week after I had her. I have not got my second period yet but should be getting it in the next few days.

really it just depends on the person...i had some really bad post-partum bleeding for like 9 weeks after I had my son...once that stopped i had like 4 days of no blood then I started back on Valentine's day...oh boy...talk about a ruined night lol. If you are worried about it though you should call your doctor...I did and they assured me everything was fine.

Yeah its different for everyone. My son is 8.5 months old and I finally got mine a few weeks ago. I'm breastfeeding and I think it happened because he finally started sleeping longer stretches at night, so I'm only nursing him once at night, if at all.

Wow! I really learnt a thing or two after reading through the replies. Cos I didn't understand why my period didn't come for 2 mths after I had my daughter. As I am 41yrs old already, I really thought that I was into a stage of menopause and it worried me so much. Thanks ladies for your helpful input.

the bleeding directly after birth isn't a period, it's called lochia...your uterus is shedding all of the lining that was built up during pregnancy. It can last for several days, or several weeks depending on the woman. You can then start your period as soon as a month (or less) after the lochia has stopped. Some women experience a delay in re-starting their period when they are exclusively breastfeeding, some women don't...it all depends on your individual body and how it responds to milk production. I got my period three weeks after the Lochia stopped....and I nursed both of my kid exclusively for a year.....

Yes I would have to agree. My daughter was in the NICU for a month and I was nursing and pumping and i got my when she was 6.5 months and she is now 9 months. My youngest boy I kinda was nursing and I got my 2 months later and my oldest boy I didn't nurse at all and I didn't get one for 3 months. I had c-sections with all three so of course I had that gunk. It just totally depends on your body.

It depends. I am beast feeding and I just started when my baby was 8 months old. Stress and the number of feedings will determine when your body decides to start the cycle again. Some people even start while breast feeding exclusively. My doctor told me I could go up to one year without a period. I wasn't so lucky.

I breast fed for two weeks, I couldn't handle it. I almost died when I gave birth I hemmoraged so they said it could take forever, or the opposite. I stopped breast feeding after two weeks and two weeks later I was on a regular cycle.

Okay I guess I'm just strange but after my 4 weeks of bleeding after birth. I started my normal period 2 weeks later..ugh! I've had friends tell me they did not get their monthly until child turned 1 years old...I breastfed and formula med ..good luck to you!

Every woman is different. In most cases if you are breastfeeding, you wont get it until you introduce solids or start weaning. Formula feed babies, moms usually get it after a month or two. I am breastfeeding and it has been 5 months...and still no sign of it! :)

well Ladie's, I want to thank everyone for all their input. Madison is 9 weeks on tuesday and i stopped bleeding about 3 weeks ago and I hated it. I did have unprotected sex a couple times since i have had her so that is why i am so nervous.....LOL! That is a BIG deal for me because i am epileptic and i am 35 years old and the dr's think if i were to get pregnant again then there would be a very big risk of problems.....SO needless to say i am hoping that the insurance company will say that they will tie my tubes or do the IUD!!!

Breastfeeding plays a big role in when you start getting your period again. When you breast feed, it tells your body to not produce your period (I dont know the whole process) and usually when you stop breast feeding, your body acclimates itself and you will start getting your periods again. My son was born Oct 30th and I was not able to breast feed. I got my period in January. Everyone is different. Check with your doctor if you are concerned!
My daughter was almost 9 months old when my period started back. I too was hoping it would stay away longer! I continue to breastfeed. So far the first two have been quite heavy & very painful which is not my norm. Hopefully it will only get better!

I don't know what's going on with my crazy system! I have been exclusively feeding my 5 month old formula for about 3 fulls months now & I STILL haven't had a period. I was worried that I was prego again so I took a pregnancy test & it came back negative. So, who knows? I have my 6 month postpartum checkup with my OB/GYN next month & if it hasn't come back by then I will definitely bring it up.

for me, i bled for about a week PP, then a week off, then bled for another 3 weeks... then 1 week off, and had my first period. then 3 weeks off, and had another period... i'm EBFing, so it really just depends on you and your body. a better person to ask, would be the women in your family, to see what is normal for them.
Amanda - posted on 02/27/2010
i honestly don't remember with the first two but after #3 it was a whopping 7 months before i started the monthly bleed. Perhaps because i was nursing full time....Within 5 months of restarting my period i was pregnant again....so it'll be awhile before i get another. (i'm 14 weeks along atm)

My period started back after 7 months, I am still breastfeeding and was hoping that it would stay away a little longer, but no such luck. The first one seemed really heavy and then I went almost two month without another, now it's seems pretty regular.

Depends on the person. Some people start getting their period pretty soon after the birth of their baby. Breastfeeding can play a part in suppressing ovulation. My son is 14 months old and I still haven't had a period. From what I've heard, though, some people get their period once they stop BFing at night and the baby sleeps through, some people get their period back once they introduce solids into their babies' diet. Some people don't get their period back until they stop BFing altogether (my son BF's twice a day). Obviously, if you are feeding your baby formula, your periods would come back sooner. My friends who fed their babies formula all said that their period came back within 3 weeks. It's all an individual thing, really.
