10 hours is fantastic for a 5 month old! The best you should expect is a 5 hour stretch between 3 and 6 months. After 6 months you can expect a 6-8 hour stretch. Yes there are lots of babies who sleep 11 hours straight, but this should not be used as a benchmark as it is not indicative of the majority.
Often when babies are waking very early in the morning and still tired it is because they are going to bed too late. Try putting her to bed earlier. A normal bedtime for her age would be around 8pm. Also, until about 10 months, it is normal for babies to become tired very quickly when they first get up in the morning and they usually need their first nap after 45 minutes. For the rest of the day you can expect a 5 month old to stay awake for 1-2 hours at a time (usually 1.5 hours) before needing a nap.

My daughter is 5 months as well and sleeps 12-13 hours at night. Then is up for an hour at most and goes back to sleep. It's quite common for babies to only stay up a short time in the morning before their first nap. My son was the same way and other mothers I've talked to also agree; their babies were ultra sleepy in the morning.

My daughter use to spend more time asleep then awake... She slept from 8.30pm at night to 8.30 ama nd she would have 2 or 3 sleeps during the day and they would be 1.5 to 2 hours long. She did this up until about 16 months of age then she slept twice a day for 2 hours and 12 hours at night. once we got to 19 months she only had one sleep in the sfternoon after lunch for 3 hours nad then 12 hours of sleep at night. Bless her she loves her sleep. now my son who is 10 months old goes through stages of sleeping patterns. He goes to bed at 7-7.30pm will sleep until 6-6.30am, has been doing this since about 3 months but he use to wake up once to three times a night. during the day he has alwys slept for 2 naps one int he morning one in the arvo after lunch but they will vary from 1 hour to three hours. Finally in the past 4 weeks he has started to sleep through the night unless he is teething in which case he wakes up and will have a bottle of water now. If either of my children woke up before 6.30am i would give them there bottle as they would just have it and go back to sleep until 8am as if i got them up they would get to cranky and tired. All babies are different but if she is still tired them try feeding her and puting her back down and see if this makes a difference.

My 15 month old has NEVER slept more than 10 hours....she goes to bed at 8pm and is up at 6am without fail. And....that doesn't count the AT LEAST once where she waked up in the middle of the night. Last night I was up with her from 3-4am.....

I have found that looking over this routine for my son has helped out heaps. I am going to this ceneter tomorrow to help with his settling and other issues that I need help with, but maybe give it a go and see how it works. My son sleeps on and off for about 9 hours a night starting at 6.30ish with feeds most of the time every 4 or so hours, and he's only 11 weeks old. We had a good go last night. He slept from 10.30 PM to 5 AM..straight! Also, he likes to wake up at 5 AM as well. He's been pretty much for the most part a great night sleeper though. http://www.tresillian.net/tresillian-tip...

my lo sleeps all night on average she will be asleep between 6:30 and 7:30pm and won't awake until morning around 7:30am. It all really depends how much sleep she gets during the day. I have read somewhere that at this age they usually like to get around 14 hours a day sleep. So my lo is right on par. She knows how much sleep she needs.

Thank you all for the feedback. It makes me feel better. I guess I forgot to mention that she has still been getting up for a feeding at night most nights. I guess my concern was that she seems up for good at 5 ish. Although I noticed that if I let her lay on me or sometimes put her in the swing she will go back to sleep lately. I just don't want to set that up as the pattern.

with my oldest sh sleeps from 8pm to 7-8am, but when she was born she slept from 11pm to 8am. She was easy to ge on a schedule she knew nap time was at noon and bedtime was at 8. As for my new baby she pretty much sleeps all night but is up around 6ish to nurse then sleeps for 2 more hours and is up the rest of the day. So every child is different, it all just depends on the kid.

my daughter is 8 months and still does not sleep through the night. however i do leave her in her crib from about 9pm to 7am. she will wake up about 2 times and cry for a few minutes and then fall back asleep. she was waking up at least 5 times a night until about 7 months. so you have it very easy :) When my daughter is still fussy that usually means she wants to go back to sleep and i will nurse her and that usually puts her back to sleep.

What do you mean she "only sleeps 10 hours"? Thats pretty good for a 5 month old. You do realize there are tons of babies out there that are almost a yr old or older not sleeping through the night yet.... lol.
My son is 4 months old. By about 1 -2 months old he was sleeping 7 hrs at night and since about 2.5-3 months old he has been sleeping 10-12 hrs at night. When he wakes up at about 8 or 9 am he nurses, and goes back to sleep about 30-45 minutes after his feeding.

My LO always wakes at 5 am aswell....he always has! We let him fuss or talk for a while(15-20mins) then he falls back to sleep...now that he is rolling over often we sometimes put him in bed with us then he sleeps untill 7 or 8am! Then he is up for one hour then takes a 2 hour nap! So around 11-12hr of sleep!
