I am from Cape Town and I don’t think you must listen to a pharmacist they just want to give a child antibiotics. What I have done is find a really good paediatrician (Dr White ) Somerset West that you can call (24 hours) about all the serious day to day things.

completely agree with what vicki's put.
in the UK you see your health visitor at home or at the baby clinc for minor concerns such as weaning etc and for weighing

In Australia there are child health nurses that do all the regular checkups and weighing (not that I think weighing is important, but that's another topic!). If my boy is unwell and needs a doctor, I go to the gp. He only saw a paediatrician after the birth as there were a few complications, and recently as he has an undescended testicle that needs surgery. The gp gave us a referral.
In my mind paediatricians are specialists you see if there are specialists problems. A nurse or gp can deal with everyday development and illnesses. In pregnancy and birth, I also believe a midwife can deal with the everyday and the specialist skills of an obstetrician should be saved for complications only.
