Look up "Mommy thumb" or Dequervain tendinitis. You can buy a thumb splint from a drugstore that will help a lot.

Sounds like De Quervain's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Quervain...
Rest it, try a wrist brace, and if it's still bothering you, you could get a cortisone injection. I had the same issue when my daughter was about 18mos and the cortisone made it 100% better. It's also called " New Mother's Wrist" as it's usually caused by carrying an infant around in the same arm. Hurts to do things like open a jar, right?

Just a thought, but could it be carpal tunnel? ( no idea if that's the correct spelling). If you are having any other things going on it could be linked to your thyroid. I could be way our in left field, but it might be worth looking into.

It's carrying the baby that will do it. Try to carry him/her with your other arm to give your hand a break, and if you have to rock the baby for hours to get him or her to sleep, probably that's not helping either. I had terrible pains in both wrists by the time my porker was 8 months old, and when we trained him to go to sleep without being bounced and rocked the pain disappeared within a few weeks. Remember you can permanently damage your joints, so don't just ignore it. Figure out a way to meet the baby's needs without destroying your body.

I doubt the giving birth has anything to do with the pain you are experiencing in your thumb and wrist. I would schedule a doctors appointment and get it checked out if it's bothering you that much.
