I saw on the news they were talking about gripewater. Does this really work?

my son had really bad for about a month when he was about 4months old. gripe water only helped for abt 30mins before he was in full colic swing again. he practically lived in the swing at the time (rainforest swing.. it has 2 swinging positions and an overhead mirror) that calmed him infinitely better and faster than gripe water. but you know, you try things and do what you have you to do to keep baby happy and healthy. i would just read the label on the back. i know the newer gripe waters aren't supposed to have alcohol or bicarbonate (which is supposed to be really bad for with milk), but you never know (especially if someone is giving it to you).

I always used mylicon it was great for gas. I use gripe water for tummy aches. When my son was about ten months old he ate a jalapeno combo (those pretzel bit things) and he was moaning and groaning with a belly ache gave him some gripewater worked like a charm!

I've used gripe water since Izze was two days old. Her hiccups are insane and they do get painful for her despite the dr. saying they don't hurt a baby. I visited family in NC and couldn't believe the price of gripewater. It is insane compared to home. It was three almost four times the price there than at home. It also helps her when her tummy is upset. I use ovol when she is gassy because she doesn't burp well. We haven't had a problem with it and it helps her. I liked Mylicon for her gas but can't find it in canada.

Gripe water is AMAZING, I don't care what anyone says. It soothes upset tummies, helps with hic-ups, sometimes instantly gets rid of them, I saw someone ask about teething, I've never heard of that either, but my mom used it on all 3 of us kids, including her colicky daughter.... just check the bottle when you buy it and make sure its alcohol free, but I don't think anyone makes it with alcohol anymore. We usually buy the mom to mom brand at Safeway for about $6.

We had a health nurse tell us not to use it because "we have no statistics on it" which I don't understand why its been around longer than some of the ones she listed, she told us to try Ovol, which didn't work for our girl, but for those who might be interested that haven't tried gripe water I have both bottles in front of me.
Gripe water: Medicinal ingredient: Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking soda)
Non-Medicinal: Water, Sucrose, Glycerin, Polysorbate 80, dill oil, anise oil, fennel oil

Ovol only has the active ingredient on the bottle, and I don't have the box, it's: Simethicone which I didn't like the sounds of so I googled it:
Simethicone is an oral anti-foaming agent used to reduce bloating, discomfort and pain caused by excess gas in the stomach or intestinal tract. It is a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane and silica gel.

my daughter is not very fussy but it seemed like she always got the hiccups (it was really cute) they annoy her alot so i tried gripewater as long as i give it to her as soon as the hiccups start they go away but now shes better at dealing with them so i dont give it to her unless i see she is uncomfortable

if i'm not mistacken gripewater has been around for years my grandmother was the one who told me about it she used it on her kids... there are a lot of different brands but they all do the same thing. i was told to follow one rule when buying baby products always buy the one with the least amount of ingrediants

Gripewater is wonderful! I have used it since my sone came home and he has a bad milk protein allergy that caused awful colic...the gripewater was a saving grace. I keep it at home, and in the diaper bag!

NO.. I boiled Anise Seeds in water. I tablespoon for 24oz of water that worked like a charm. His pediatrician also recommended it. I will tell you that the firs time I gave it to my son was the first night we got some sleep. He slept 5 hours straight at 3 weeks.

I am telling you IT IS SO WORTH IT!!! Our son cried for 12 hours AT BIRTH! The hospital "thought nothing of it" You know your child better than anyone! It is all natural and they can use it in every bottle. It helped our son SOOO MUCH! He was labeled "colic" You know all that means is we have no idea! There are 2 versions of the "gripewater". One is acually named Gripewater. About $11 a bottle. The other is Gentle Naturals ( disney baby ) Tummy Soother. They have the same ingredients and this one is $5.99. They both work. Stop your pain & your babies. Go get some!

I found it worked wonders when my baby was gassy or had hiccups, she is having it less as she is growing older but still needs it from time to time & it even calmed her down when Id ran out of her teething gel.

Gripewater did not help my baby with his colic, but it did make burping him easier. But when it works, it really works! I have friends who tried it and swear by it for getting gassy babies to calm down and sleep well at night. You should really try it out for yourself to see if it can help your baby... the good thing is, it contains no medication, so it's entirely safe to try out no matter how young the infant is. All the best!

Last I saw, The name on this question was Mollie. Not Rebecca. If you wish to direct a response toward Me, I suggest you send it in message form, and not cause an off topic discussion on some poor girl's thread. I wouldn't want one in mine and I certainly do not like the fact of someone starting one on someone elses because of my opinion.

I am relieved that most brands do Not use alcohol. Mollie, I am sorry. If it works for your child, use it, but I wouldn't. Just like about half and half of moms believe in cereal in the bottle, I'm one who doesn't. It's totally a personal decision as is anything you do with Your child because it's well.....Yours. Not anyone elses. Don't listen to these meanies like me being all ignorant to the fact that some people truely believe in these scam remedies for collic and hiccups. I'm 20 years old and I still get the hiccups. Lol.

Best of luck.

I used Ovol which is like Gripe water but you can add it directly to the formula to help get rid of gas faster than waiting for after the pain starts. Both products should only be used up to 4 times daily. I used Gripe water and Ovol since my baby was a week old when he became colicky. Now I use Kolik which is also the same thing but not as strong tasting as the Gripe water and works for teething. My son stops crying immediately. Its the miracle "non-drug" drug.

This works great! My daughter used to have the hardest time burping after nursing, and she would end up with really painful gas. Once I started using gripewater, then she would burp almost immediately and it solved the gas problem!

hi rebecca, im sorry that this topic is upsetting to you but i think its wrong to tell someone that they dont know what they r doing when you dont even know what your talking about yourself. before you criticize others i think you need to do your research. and by the way, all children dont need to burp. a burp is caused by air in the tummy. if you use a good bottle for feeding then there shouldnt be any air in the belly. my son rarely burped and he was NEVER fussy. thats because i used a good bottle that didnt allow air. i only used the gripe water for hiccups. thanks and have a great day!

wtf is gripe water?? if your kid isn't burping, you're doing it wrong or they're stubborn. try putting the kid on their tummy and massaging right at the top of the diaper. if their belly is mushy, they don't need to burp.

for an upset stomach i use milicon drops or pedialyte.

I was told to try gripe water when my son was gassy. I don't know how well it worked on his gassiness, cuz I find that mylicon works better for him, but I LOOVVEE gripe water for his hiccups. He gets really bad hiccups sometimes and I give him the gripe water and they go away really fast. I wouldn't say that its expensive. There are certain brands that are $12-$15 but if you get the Little Tummies brand its like $7 and its a decent sized bottle.
