just intrested to know what other mums think out there about babies sleeping through the night. i was under the imprescion that babies are ment to wake during the night for feeds up until about 7 months i was once told by a midwfe. my son is 6 months old and can wake every 2-3 hours most nights for feeds sometimes i do get the occasional 4 hour which i love. i just thought this is what babies do but hear other mum's who get stressed if there baby isn't sleeping through by 6 weeks. don't get me wrong i would love it if my son slept longer and i say you lucky buggers to the mum's who's kids do sleep through. would love to hear your comments

It varies with every child and there is no right or wrong answer for how long babies should, or do, sleep during the night. My first woke every 2 hours until he was 2 weeks then only woke once or twice (between the hours of 10pm and 5am) he still fed 2 hourly during the day though, and started sleeping through the night (9-10pm till 5am) at 8 weeks (fully breastfed) By the time he was 6mths he slept 12hrs every night no matter what time he went to bed. My second woke only once a night from the day she was born! And she didn't really feed either, it was more for a nappy change. She was a big baby at 9lb 2oz, so I think that helped, and she was fully breastfed every 2-4 hours during the day. I didn't really have routines I just went with the flow. She was sleeping through at 5 weeks. But when she was 18mths we started having issues with sleep walking! Mostly resolved when baby #3 came along. My third, woke twice a night for a couple of weeks, then once, and was sleeping through by 6weeks. She is an early riser though and will be up anywhere between 5:30am and 6:30am no matter what time she goes to bed.
I believe I have been very lucky with my babies sleep patterns, and I hope my luck hasn't run out with #4 due shortly! lol Some of my friends are still getting up to their babies up to 4 times a night and they are nearly 3 years old.

My son is 2 and 5 months and still wakes 1 sometimes 2 times a night. it's individual based on the baby's temperment and internal clock. In one book i read sleeping through the night meant 12 am to 5 am.

I didn't really think about it before I had my baby, I thought that they woke up sometimes but assumed they went right back to sleep again... oh, how wrong I was!

But after my son was born, I just desperately waited for him to sleep through the night. We were lucky in that sense, because at 5 weeks he started sleeping about 5 hours in the night, and by 2 months old he would sleep for 7 or 8 hours straight probably 4 or 5 days out of the week. He was breastfed at that point. I started having trouble with supply at around 3 months, and they told me to wake him up to feed him in the night, but there was no way in hell I was going to do that. The poor child slept only about 9 hours out of every 24, and I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Getting less sleep *on purpose* sounded like terrible advice.

My sister-in-law switched her child to formula when he was 6 months just to try to get more sleep, but he still wakes up every few hours, and he's already 13 months old! Poor her.

Of course, at all other times my son was refusing naps and screaming his head off, so we were less lucky in that regard...

So, I guess normal is very different for different babies.

sleeping through the night for young infants can often mean 4hrs or more.... but I have heard other moms say they're infants sleep 7 or 8 hours at 6 weeks. I always heard that something was wrong if they do that, but the moms that I've talk to babies are fine... but its very rare that I've heard this.
Also it depends on if they're breastfed or formula fed, formula fed babies usually sleep longer.

My son started sleeping all the way through the night as soon as he was eating 3 meals of solids, which was about 6 1/2 months.

All babies are different though, I think its perfectly normal for you son to still be waking, but I also think that you can start gradually increasing his time between feedings. Some babies just wake up out of habit.
