My little guy does this, he's 10 months old and probably started doing it more around 9 months. For my son, it seems like he's trying to get some spacial awareness, because he'll sit and lean back until his head hits whatever is behind him and then he keeps doing this, kind of like he's checking to make sure the object is still there and figure out how far back he can lean and stuff...kind of funny to watch.

My son lies down and and puts his legs and arms out and will start bumping his head off of the floor, especially when he is on a blanket. It isn't hard at all but he starts going pretty quickly. It is hilarious. He seems to think it is a lot of fun.

I would say it's normal, although I totally freaked when I noticed my son doing it. We were coming home from a very long trip and I was sitting in the back playing with him when all of a sudden he just started hitting his head on the side of the car seat. Then he started going back and forth to each side. And he'd laugh and smile! He didn't hit it hard, just enough to make a little noise. He still does it all the time on the high chair on the floor, wherever, whenever. I think they have to get a sense of the spatial thing like Kari suggested and also they realize hey if I do this it feels like this and I may be wrong, but I think my son does it so I laugh! lol...
