from my own personal experience on this, i say yes. my sons father took off when he was 2, and i had to deal with my poor baby asking where his daddy was, why didn't he love him, etc. he tried to get back into his life and i told him no, my son didn't remember him anyway. i would take it to the courts for full custody with no visitation since he shows a violent history. he doesn't deserve to be a father at this point!

Given that he is a violent man, I would certainly keep her away for now and go through the courts to sort out custody/visitation. If the courts allow him visitation then ask for it to be supervised, and ask that he is not allowed near you as you are the person he beat!

If he does have visitations with her, they should be supervised by a law enforcement person.

Have you petitioned for full custody? If not, do so immediately. I would definitely not let him see her for a very long time. How old is she now? Is he out of jail? Is he asking to see her? Is she asking about him?

Why did he try to take her from you? It sounds like there is more to the story than him just trying to take her.
As to your question, you will have to get full custody of your daughter, through a court system, or you could get into some trouble. Or the father could sign his rights over.
