Milk coming out of my baby's nose!

My now 9 wk old had those issues at about 2 weeks and on. He would get breastfed then several minutes after he would gag and then throw up with the milk coming out his mouth and nose simultaneously! It is a very scary thing because he would sometimes change color on me and I constantly worried he would aspirate. He was later diagnosed with acid reflux. I stopped breastfeeding (a very difficult decision to make) and had to go through 3 different formulas before we settled on Similac Alimentum that and liquid Prevacid twice a day seem to be working. Its stil a work in progress but maybe acid reflux could be the culprit. Hope this helps.

My son is 10 weeks old and every now and then the same thing happens to him at first it use to scare me but now I just pat his back and then I clean his nose. I'm use to it now I think its from them being full and the milk come back up but this also happen to my son if he getting move around a lot but I guess its normal just keep a clothes eye on your daughter and make sure she ok.

my daughter is one month 1week old...from very first day when she born milk comes out from nose after every feed....she was not gaining weight as well.....i met to doc and he gave domstal..after now she gained some weight but still milk is coming out from nose....is anything about to worry.....large amount she spit out..i m afraid about her weight and growth..what should i do guys?? plz help me out...

you should still get the acid reflex test done. it really helped my baby when she got on the zantac. good luck and stay strong.....

Thank you guys.My baby is breastfed exclusively,so i thought she wont be overfed.She never refuses the breast.I found it helpful that after i feed her,I burp her then hold her upright for 20-30 min.

I forgot to mention, that if you sleep your baby on her back and she is in a crib already, another thing that helps is to lift the crib mattress and put a little pillow under it. that will raise the head of her bed a little bit and help keep the food down too! but I would watch how she does on it at first. I had this problem with my son and still do from time to time. milk was coming out of my baby's nose! after many switches in his formula and many tests in the hospital we found a few solutions and reasons why it was happening. 1 thing we did, switched to alimentum formula... he was allergic to milk protein. that was upsetting his stomach, he was spitting up and milk was coming out of his nose. it was still happening so we did the tests and come to find out he had acid reflux. so he is now on Zantac drops and his dr said to add a little cereal to help keep the milk down. it is scary when it happens but you have to stay calm. your daughter will get even more scared if you are scared. just talk to her in a calm voice, pat her back.... use a bulb to get the stuff out of her nose. if still looks like choking put her on your arm with head down and pat her on her back. i use to freak out but after my dr told me to calm down and tell my son to calm down he did and the episodes weren't as scary! just hang in there! the older she gets, the less milk will come out of your baby's nose.

Hello....



My daughter was born with a cleft pallette. my doctor noticed right at birth. One of the symptons is stuff comes out the nose and also has breathing problems. She also has acid reflux with very similair symptons . Try elevating the crib/ bassinet usually helps with the breathing. I am not a doctor but sometimes these matters are oever seen in babies. My daughter just had her surgery and it recovering well. and all these little issues are dissapearing. Im a happier momma knowing my baby is healthier!

This is very scary. My baby had milk coming out of her nose at 5 days old. the second time she did was the very next day. we were at the hospital visiting my father-in-law and it happened. this time was worse. we could not get her to breath. they calle da code blue. I was in the hospital for a week with her. running all kinds of test. they found out that she has acid reflex. and put her on zantac and reglen. she has not had any episodes ever since. but don't do the reglan. the FDA has blacked boxed it. i am getting her off of it. the zantac works.

Hello Sharon, I use to freak out when my son would projectile puke out of his mouth and nose, and then turn red and panic because he couldnt breathe. The doctor said to make sure that when the baby does that they are on their side, that way the milk or mucous wont go down into the lungs. My son was born a preemie so his tummy was not mature enough to handle the large amounts of milk he was taking. We went through different medications and they didnt help. Now that he is 7 months old he does not do it anymore. It was so scary but each time it happened so i understand your concern. Hope it gets better!

I know how scary that can be, My son also does that from time to time... Now I know that doctors tell you not to lay a baby on a pillow, but for my son, laying him on a pillow for a while right after burping him really helps..A friend of mine that is a nurse told me it has something to do with the reflux system..but I have also noticed that he was doing after being out side in wind..is your baby a bit colicky ? Hope this helps

Hi there, I know this can be scarey and it happens because of the forse the milk is coming uo. The gap between the back of the throat and back of the nasal passages are so short, that the excess comes up too much.



The best thing to do is after a feed, wind your baby untill you hear a burp. That's with breast fed as well as bottle fed, and keep upright for 30 mins before putting down.



That way any excess milk can come up (cal;ed possettint), and no wind will get trapped. It's when your baby isn't winded fully and carries on feedind, when they eventually burp, the wind pushes the milk up.



Try and get a nasal aspirator,
