Mirena stink?-embarrising

Alyssa all I can say you are not alone with your side effects from Mirena. I work with women every day that have used or are using Mirena and I hear about terrible complications. That is not to say that some people are not super happy with Mirena in my job I just talk to the people that have had side effects. If ever you need some help with side effects from Mirena let me know and I will direct you to the right place for compensation.

The side effects that I hear about from Mirena is
#Perforation of the uterine wall
#Device embedded itself in the uterine wall
# Device migrated from the original implanted location
# Patient became pregnant while device was implanted

I would say that migration is the most common side effect that I hear from women.

Just keep an eye on it so these side effects don't happen to you, I hear enough about it and certainly don't want it to happen to any more women.

I've had the Mirena for about three years and at first it was great I had no problems at all. I haven't had a period since, and I feel horrible as hell. I was sceptical about the Mirena, because I have a uterian fibroid and I thought getting the Mirena will just add other problems I asked my doctor and he told me that It would be fine... I'm concerned about my weight gain, my yeast Infections and I'm always feeling this buring sensation. I'm going to get this Mirena removed so that I can feel normal again. Has anyone else had these symtoms

I just went to the emergency room last night bec I was experiencing the same foulsmell n they did a urine test on my n vaginal exam n she told me smell is not normal bec I asked n the urine showed that I had a infection the doc told me Yeh mirena cause an bacteria build up bec my body was not used to it I have been having the IUD for 3 months so guy the smell is an infection she gave me some medication n its pills ... So don't suffer with the smell its not normal go n get the smell cleared up the mirena caused the smell it will not go away but get worse if not treated I hope this help :)

I have been experiencing the same smell mainly after my periods, but Ive always had issues with Bacterial Vaginosis. So my doctor suggested that I use rephresh or replens. It's almost like the oral medicine Ive used vaginally to get rid of my BV but it's over the counter. It works really well within 3 days and puts your PH back on track with in that time frame. I also use PH balance soap to help keep me fresh throughout the month. I would definitely check with your doctors before using it, but it's the only way I maintain my smell while having my mirena in. I don't plan on having it removed anytime soon that's why I don't mind going through this maintenance. Oh and BTW I hardly have sex I have been single for over a year now...and have only had sex 3 times in one year....I get regular check ups and so I'm absolutely clean!

*********UPDATE********* I just wanted to let you guys know that I had the Mirena removed like 2 days after my original post and I am now back to normal completely. While at the doctor's office, I had them test me again just to make sure I didn't have BV (but I didn't think I did). Sure enough, the doctor said that my pap was normal and the swab test was normal. I had the thing removed, bled very heavily for about 5 days afterward and voila! The awful fishy, foul, rotten smell was gone! I'm back to normal. I can't tell you how liberated I feel. I think having the Mirena removed has even given my sex life a boost (hopefully I won't get preggers lol). I tell you, this experience was one of the worst ever for me. It caused me a lot of emotional and mental distress because of constant concern that others could smell me and because of the embarrassment of my husband definitely smelling me during and after sex (though he was a sweetheart about it). The convenience of having the mirena was more of an inconvenience afterall and decreased my quality of life. Hope this info helps someone out there.

I have the mirena in and have had it in for almost 2 years. i notice a weird smell down there sometimes and i KNOW i showered. my boyfriend even says sometimes" im just curious why sometimes it smells?" LOL i didnt have an exact answer to that one as I am very clean and shower all the time. I honestly think that the Mirena is whats making the smell. because the mirena has extra hormones in it and thats adding more hormones to your body. I am thinking of maybe changing or getting it out. dont like smelly. ;)

Hey, thanks for your post. I have been having the same odor issue for 6 months now. It is not an infection because I've been to the doctor to have that checked and I was fine. I also do not have any other symptoms exept for a dull ache on my right side during my period where my ovaries should be. I have absolutely never had a problem like this before having the Mirena inserted and I'm very careful about my hygiene. We women know our bodies better than any doctor and should trust our instincts. I'm getting mine removed before the end of the year. I was so very excited to get the Mirena after I had my baby but it has turned out to be a big disappointment and even a hinderance in my life! This is a quality of life issue and should not be taken lightly or just brushed off as just a little stink in the pink (sorry...that was kinda gross). This is affecting the quality of lovemaking for me and my husband. One good thing has come out of this though...I know for sure my husband really loves me because he still tries to do the things I'm used to (sexually) to please me and he hasn't complained about the odor. It just makes me feel so bad and like I don't want him to touch me (to spare him the pain). I'm going to stop here before I start crying. I'm just going to get this evil thing out of me! That is all.

Mirena is known to cause an increase in bacterial vaginosis. This is not an STD or STI is can happen without having sex. Heavy discolored discharge and bad smell are the two most common complaints. You may also have discomfort during sex and/or bleeding or spotting after intercourse. The treatment is easy. Just need to see your doc. I hope it gets better!

Yes.. Most likely you have bv bacteria vaginosis.. It will get worse with out treatment.. women with Mirena are much more likely to get it. Call you Dr. they may make you come in for a smell test and then will most likely give you flagyl.. Should clear it right up.. On the down side you will most likely get a yeast infection from this antibiotic and it can reoccur

I got the IUD Mierna inserted on September 14th (it is now November 7th) and I HATE IT. I was on the deppo shot before, and decided I wanted to do the Mierna because it is convenient and easy and there are less hormones regulating throughout your body. I hated the shot because it made my once perfectly pimple free face break out like I had the chicken pox. The Mierna is great in the aspect of you look great on the outside (unlike the deppo shot), but on the inside you can tell things are off. About a few weeks into having the Mierna I noticed a poop-like smell coming from my vagina and started to freak out thinking my hygiene was off... turns out it was the Mierna. It has gotten to the point where I have had a constant, heavy period for over a month now. My period first started off as a light pink, to a bright red, and now it's been brown and bright red every other day. (so for example monday its red, tuesday its brown, wednesday its red and hardly there, thursday it's dark brown etc.) My boyfriend and I have been fighting right after we stop having sex because once he smells the smell he gets turned off and his penis gets soft and I get frustrated/embarrassed and it gets really uncomfortable for both of is. I AM DONE WITH THE MIRENA and DO NOT recommend it to ANYONE!!!! It is not a bacterial infection to my knowledge, because it smells like copper and a poop like mixture. I have excellent hygiene and cannot stand smelling like this. Getting it removed in a few days.

I just got it put in on wed. And it's Saturday I noticed a lot of discharge not brown or red but kind clear (grose I know ) also I had a small piece of gray looked like skin come out of that area I looked it up nd was told it was due to silver nitrate ( put it on baby's belly buttons to help stop bleeding after stump is pulled off) and was nothing to b worried about. But I have noticed a smell as well to me it smells like brown sugger ( sry to ppl with sensitive Tummys) I looked that up 2 on there web site nd found out its very normal. So don't be to worried.

i had the mirena after about 5 months i got BV which is bacterial vaginosis it causes a terriable odor. My doctor kept treating me with antibiotics which would help for a few months but the BV kept coming back. I knew it was as a result of having the IUD but my doctor insisted it wasn't after two years of trying go convince him to take the IUD out I went to another doctor and had it removed. The infection it had caused was so bad and still today (3 yrs later) I still get BV at least every other month. My gynocologist said I will probably get it forever now its as common as a yeast infection after you get it once your very prone to keep getting it. There is also a commercial now with a lawsuit against the Marina IUD. The only advice I can give you is to take it out. No discharge with odor is normal.

Omg....I have this same exact thing!! I got mine put in about 5 months ago and in the past month have been noticing more discharge and a smell...It is embarrassing because I am afraid other people can smell it...? My boyfriend hasn't said anything about it at all, but I notice it because I have never had a smell before....I am soooo glad you posted this, and I feel such great relief because I was really worried... But I will definitely be talking to my doctor about this. My only problem is I don't have my insurance anymore and it's like $400 to get it taken out... :/

I had A LOT of yeast infections when I had mine in. I also got some cysts due to extra hormones, all these went away shortly after I had it removed. If you have any issues with an IUD its a good idea to get it checked out. They aren't as worry-free as everyone thinks

My daughter is going on 3 in Feb. I have had it in for about 2 and a half years at this point. I have not noticed any of the symptoms you are having. I would have it checked in case it has moved or something. But I think it could also be normal, everyone's body is different and reacts to things accordingly. Just have it checked to be safe! yes, i had an excess amout of bacteria build up. antibiotics cleared it up and the smell went away. see your dr or midwife its not normal but easily fixed.

I'm coming up on a month now since I had the Mirena inserted, and just in the last week I've noticed it as well, prett disgusting actually, and it started stinking when I had not had sex........I have my month follow up next week and I'll be asking about it.....if that's normal, I don't think I can handle it....ugh. I was hoping it was short term, but after reading some of the responses below, seems like it can occur longer into the usage....not happy, but going through the same thing.

Here's a totally honest answer for you and I don't have mirena but I noticed that after I had my daughter, I had a "different" odor down there then I ever had before. I mean, I had my daughter when I was 23 so it actually might have just been age and "growing" up. It really bothered me at first but I think it might have been hormones because hormones can change your odor too.

I just removed my Mirena myself. I was having some VERY wierd symptoms and actually could SENCE that it was there. I took it out and THAT WaS THE SMELL!!! sorry TMI! I know what your referring too. I barely had this in for 1 month. I have 3 babies under 3 (3 yo is autistic) so I really wanted something foolproof. I dont want to have to REMEMBER a pill when I can barely remember why I walked into the kitchen lol! But this device was TERRIBLE! I had cramping... Bleeding.... It was EXTrEAMLY painful to put in (barely felt it as I myself removed it). My Breastmilk changed flavor... My head felt wierd and I had weird COLD chills running down my arm... Wierd Head rushes and my Bipolar also was a meSS!!! I feel relief after removing it. I have some slight cramping but NO PAIN... and the STINK is GONE!!!!

Alyssa, alot of my friends sware by the Implanon. The patch that goes in your arm. You can leave it in as long as you like or get it replaced or removed every 3 yrs, this is when the amount of hormone runs out. You do have to have the patch inserted under the skin, a small inscision is made with a local anesthetic and implant placed, then sewn back up. I guess if you can stomach this then It may be good for you.

I also have the Mirena, placed 6 wks PP, now 12 wks PP. I've also had continuous spotting but it may still be lochia as I didn't start bleeding until 3 wks PP. Other than the annoyance of always wearing a liner/pad and the mild period like cramps (I contribute these to my uterus shrinking) I have not noticed a funny smell.

I've had the Mirena in for about 2 months now. I have noticed a slight odor, but not one that bothers me that much. I have had an increase in discharge and spotting also, I wear a panty liner every day because I just don't know what it's going to be like that day. Just a small inconvienance for me. I could never take the pill regularly, the patch left marks on my skin, and the NuvaRing gave me horrible headaches. I love the Mirena, and other Mirena users that I know that use it say the same thing.

Well i definiatly appretiate all of you answering..and to lysha its more than likely not an infection from what i found out, lots of girls are having these problems and i have read hunderest of post from other sites, its somethign that the doctors for some reason just dont tell you, i thought going on this it would be NICE, but i was wrong the discharge and the smell are sooo not worth it! anyone else know a good form of birth control that is not a pain?

Glad u psoted this question, Alyssa! I also got the IUD about 4 mo's ago. Although my DR. never mentioned a smell may occur, but it did. I though it was my medication or some kinda wierd change in my body. I still have a little bit of discharge ( like a light period) and that not so pleasent smell down there. Hoping it will go away. It makes me feel unclean and yucky.

Amanda you may find that those cysts were from the hormones the Mirena gave out. Everywoman gets cysts in her ovaries every month when an egg is released. These are called follicular cysts. They burst once the egg ripens and passes through Follopian tubes, If your homones are inbalanced the cyst wont burst and can get bigger. Your period will normally then take that unfertalised egg away. Been as you never had a period on the mirena the egg will not reach the uterus and the cysts will stay until they burst or you get them removed. in your case once they took the Merina out, they burst (you may not have felt anything, or you may have had a slight stabbing pain on the side that the egg was released from, depending on how big the cyst got).

The discharge thats white/sticky is the stuff that cleans your cervix and vagina.

A bad smell is usually a sign of infection, so is unnusual discharge. You should see your doctor.

I previously had the iud in for 2 years and the reason I think it causes odor is because you no longer have a period which is your bodies natural way of cleaning the vagina out. So no period no cleaning. Also because I had no period I grew cysts on my ovaries again because I had no period and my body didnt flush them out. I had the iud taken out had a couple normal periods and all cysts and odors vanished.

I have had the mirena for about six weeks now and I'm still spotting also. I haven't noticed a smell but I have been using tampons for the spotting and when I take them out they have a bit of a smell. I'm just wondering when the spotting will stop, I'm a little tired of it!

I have been on this for about a month now and I am still spotting which I know is normal, but so far no odd smell, seems to me like it is pretty common here for women to get it and I will definatly look for that smell in the future, I am not afraid to be honest here. I know myself that I never even usually have a smell. The only time I did was when I was "doing it" lots and well, having a four month old son really slows it down right now haha. I honestly find that since I have had my son and been on this that I have less discharge from "that place" than ever before.

i have had Mirena over a year now and yes i have the same problem i hate it.....b/c ive done what all i can and went to the health dept and they give me some cream stuff to insert in me but a month or so after stopped using it the smell is back! Sex isnt as good to me sometimes b/c my husband and i can both feel mirena!

next time you take a bath put 1/4 cup of baking soda in your bath water. soak for 20 minutes and you will notice that the odor will be gone. then let yourself air dry instead of drying your self with a towel.

Alyssa...I have researched this for you. And have found out that it is quite common for women with the mirena IUD to notice a change in thier disharge and for it to smell funny. I don't think many people will answer this truthfully but I will. I don't have a IUD or anything but ever now and then I discharge and sometimes it smells awfully funny. I notice it particulaly the day after I have sex. . . I know this is weird but have you ever noticed a "sex smell" like mine and my husbands room gets a smell to it right after we have sex. It dosent stink it just has a certian smell. do you think that could be where your smell is coming from.
