Dont worry about your 4 week old baby spitting up a lot, he will eat what he needs too. My lil girl has silent reflux so because we never actually saw much sick it took ages to diagnose. Your bubbie wont starve himself he will eat as much as he needs even if its not much what he eats will be right for him. My lil girl is 6 months old and according to the formula should be eating 9 ounces and there is no way shel ever eat that she can only cope with between 3-5 ounces depending on how shes feeling which is half the reccomended amount. However she is gaining well and is happy most of the time so try not to count ounces every baby is so very different.

I think 3 oz is about what my son was taking at 4 weeks and gradually moved up from there. He also spit up a lot. You could try Emfamil Gentlease to see if that would help. I have also heard of people using soy formula to help reduce spit up. One person advised that I us Gripe Water to help with that and a million other things but I never tried it. I think as long as your baby is gaining weight and not screaming constantly due to hunger, everything's going to be fine!

I know how you feel my son is the same way. I brought him to the doctor they put him on zantac it took the crabbiness away but he would still spit up about 1 oz every feeding so I brought him back they did an upper GI on him came back normal no reflux but they increased his dose and switched his formula to one that has added rice starch in it already, It's just a thicker formula made for babies that babies that spit up a lot. He has been on for two weeks now and rarely spits up and he doesn't need to have such a high dose of zantac anymore. Ask your doctor about formula's and doing an upper gi to see why your 4 week old baby is spitting up so much. Best of luck.

I'm glad to see that other people are using receiving blankets as burp cloths! I've also used hand towels because they are so much more absorbent than my son's receiving blankets. He is also a spitter. Dr. had us try the Soy formula but that just constipated him and didn't change how much he was spitting up. I put him back on the regular Enfamil with Lipil for the time being. We go see the Pediatrician next week. We saw him at 2 weeks, and not again until 9 weeks! We know he is gaining weight, so we hope that he'll just grow out of his spitting up. Some bottles he spits up a LOT, some he doesn't (middle of the night feedings rarely have spit up episodes!). Also, my son was only eating about 3 ounces at 4 weeks. One day (probably around 5 weeks?) he just all of a sudden could take 5 ounces. I'm sure he'll be able to take more food - don't get discouraged! Just talk to your pediatrician and they should be able to help :) There is also the spit up formula (Enfamil A/R) that is supposed to help.

my daughter was the same way... her doctor never worried about it though. she's now 11 months old, and she still does it every once in a while, but not very much. take him to the doctor, and if your 4 week old baby spitting up is really bad, they can give you meds for it, but if hes happy and its not affecting his development or weight then they'll probably just tell you he'll grow out of it and not to worry. and he will take more food eventually. then he'll start eating real food, and make a big mess! lol. just keep burp clothes on hand... i actually preferred to use receiving blankets because they were bigger and held more puke lol

If he seems happy, even when he's spitting up, they usually call them "happy spitters". The sphincter between the stomach and the esophagus just takes some time to fully close. My son spat up all the time from about 2 - 7 months and it never bothered him, and then it just stopped. You just need to have a burp cloth in every room! lol

It could be GERD if he seems to be in pain when it happens.



But otherwise, your 4 week old baby spitting up is probably nothing to worry about. :)

He may have GERD, aka reflux. Take him to the doc & they will let you know. Reflux without meds can be bad for the esphoagus. My daughter was diagnosed at just 5 days old. Your doc will tel you some positioning ways to maybe make it better or they may put you on meds. My daughters was help by postioning at first then we had to use meds around 5 months & it was gone by 10 months. Hope this helps with your 4 week old baby spitting up. Good luck
