The Dr sent me to a G I dr because my babys weight dropped down to the 3%. He weighed 7lbs 3oz when he was born and now he is 10 months old and weighs about 16lbs. The G I dr just flat out told us there is something wrong with him. They have done several test on him. They took blood work and a sweat chloride test and took stool samples. They keep screaming about cystic fibrosis. We have no family history of Cystic fibrosis. So far his blood work is normal and the sweat chloride test came back negative. But yet they keep saying stuff about cystic fibrosis. We are just waiting on the stool samples. They are even talking about doing genetic testing and going in his stomach with a camera. I kinda feel all this is unnecessary. He is hitting his milestones and is a very happy baby. He eats pretty good and never cries with pain. Can someone please help me!!

My little one Kyria gets the same things said however no action yet, shes only just hit 15Lbs @8months and shes 0-3 round her waist. if yu think theres nothing wrong with him tbh get a second opinion from diferent doctors.

It may just be that he is behind. I would allow them to do the testing they think is necessary, you never truly know!! I hope for your family and baby's sake that their is nothing wrong! My son was 8lbs 12.5oz, so about 2lbs larger then yours, he is now 1 wk from being 2 months old and is 15lbs! BUT!!! Big babies run in both mine and my fiancee's families! Have you and your partner checked the "size" history of both families?!

My son was formula fed so he's one big boy, but all my friends who breastfed have much smaller babies, my gf son at 7 months was 13lbs, the doctor convinced her to supplement with formula and now at 10 months he is 18lbs, there was nothing wrong with her son but he wasnt reaching any of his milestones, he barely held his head up, couldnt sit up.

my son was the same way, and so was his doc. i suggest you find another doc. unless you really like this one. it's YOUR son, and YOU know him better than anyone else.

my son's doc said my son was too skinny at 6 months old (he was 12 pounds and 27") so she claimed he was "failure to thrive" and made me take him to a children's hospital or she'd call child services (obviously i had to be starving him). he was hitting milestones and everything. eating ravenously. the childrens hospital did blood work and everything else, checking EVERYTHING. and EVERYTHING came out normal. so his doc sent him to this "first steps" for kids who are falling behind in milestones (which he was not). now he's 32-1/2" and 21 pounds at 14 months old, and talking up a storm, eating (what he wants, he's super picky, fun fun fun), and trying to run (not trying to walk, he'll take 2 steps and try to run), crawling constantly.

so just because it's a doctor, doesnt mean they know what theyre talking about. you know your child better than anyone. some babies are just skinny

Thank you so much to everyones replies! You guys have made me feel so much better. He is a very happy baby and very active. He eats good and never really cries with pain only when he is sleepy!
Line- I'm sorry to hear about your niece with Cystic Fibrosis. That just breaks my heart that little kids have to deal with such big illnesses. I am glad to hear that there are other small children.
He seems to be hitting his milestones. I am small build. I weighed 98 lbs when I got pregnant. His father is a larger build though. He is 6 foot 4 and almost 300 pounds. We both have small people on both sides of our families. I like the thought of saving money on clothes! LOL!! But I was thinking about getting a second opinion. We take him to a family Dr maybe I need to try a pediatrician.

I dont see any harm in the chromosomal testing; however I believe there is no reason to stick a camera in his tummy or have any invasive procedures. Its funny how much doctors get worked up about the percentile charts. My baby had bad abdominal pain. He could never sleep because of it, he was tired and crying all of the time, he was quite behind in some areas of development and was referred to OT and physio; but they did not want to investigate to find out what the problem was because he was 50% and they only investigate problems in "failure to thrive" babies (below 15%). They only care about the percentile, not about the general well being of the baby. If you believe your baby eats well, is not in pain and is happy and developing normally, then I see absolutely no reason for a medical investigation. Have you seen a paediatrician? In my experience the peeds are much more level headed about these things than family doctors / GP's. Ask for a second opinion from a peed.

You can look up cystic fibrosis and there are a lot more symptoms that you would be able to tell in your child. Him being small does not all of a sudden make him have that. That is crazy. My son just turned one and he is only 17 lbs 13 oz. I breastfeed so my doctor wants me to add in a few cups of whole milk a day to get his weight up. She hasn't said anything about getting tests done for cystic fibrosis or anything else. Are you and the babys dad made small, me and mine are. Look up cystic fibrosis and see if your child has any symptoms and if not I would not worry so much on that. My son was around 16 lbs at 10 months i believe. My boy is also walking and running and very active so my dr said that is a reason that he is a little boy. It would be different if your baby was not hitting his milestones and wasn't developing right.

I have a cousin who is 14 months old and weighs about 17 pounds. She's just made tiny. There is nothing wrong with her. I also have a niece who is now 2 years old and she has cystic fybrosis. She was underweight also but for your child to have this diesease, both parents have to carry the gene and the sweat test would have came back abnormal. I'm sure if he's not showing any symptoms or isn't in any pain and eats well. I don't think you should worry about it. Some kids are just small that's all. Good luck
