Mommies, How can i introduce formula milk to my 10 month old daughter? I am breastfeeding her until now. I want her to drink formula milk as i feel my breastmilk is not sufficient for her. I have tried several times to give her formula milk in a bottle or sippy cup, but she kept on taking it away when she smells it. I also have tried switching brand of bottles and she still doesn't want to drink. I also have tried mixing it in her food but she don't want to eat it.

i would not even try formula, if sshe wont drink it. continue breast feeding and give her 3% milk. doctors recoment starting homo milk at 12 months anyways, and as long as you are giving her the breast milk, she can get thee fat, calcium and other nutrients from milk. or try mixing the formula with breast milk, that shoudl work anyways. but breast milk is best, unless she is loosing weight, she is very healthy

Actually, the site said this about mixing breastmilk with formula:

"Some mothers mix powdered formula with their breast milk in order to increase the calories their baby gets during a feeding. Please do not do this! Not only does it change the composition of the breast milk, but the micronutrients in the formula will become so much more concentrated that it can be very hard on your baby's immature kidneys. Always follow the exact directions on the can of powdered or concentrated formula, and never mix formula with anything but distilled water."

This is the main reason why I didn't mix when I weaned my son from breast to formula. You might want to try the Heinz Nuture formula. It doesn't smell bad like most formulas so my son was able to adjust a little better. A little warning about the Heinz formula though, it tended to constipate my son so I ended up giving him 1 part pear juice with 3-4 parts water; it keeps his stool soft and regular.

I would still recommend mixing it if she is not taking to the formula straight. That site just says not to mix it because you will have to dump the leftovers if she does not drink the whole bottle. To me at 10 months you have a pretty good idea of how many ounces she is taking at a time. You could also make a smaller bottle to start out with and then add more of the mixed milk if she is still wanting more. The smell and taste of formula is different then breastmilk, so sometimes it takes awhile for a baby to get use to the formula taste and smell. I had to do the 1/2 and 1/2 trick when I was switching my daughter from formula to whole milk.

Try mixing the breastmilk with the formula and then feeding her. You can try 1/2 and 1/2 and then adjust to more breastmilk if she will not take it that way. Then just slowly decreasing the amount of breastmilk that is mixed in.

Why do you feel your breast milk is not sufficient?!?! Is she gaining weight?! If so then your breast milk is just fine. If she is under weight or loosing weight then I would be concerned. If that is the only reason you are switch, DON'T! continue to breast feed, that is the best for your daughter... If you feel your supply has gone down, try drinking lots of water! I asked my cousin how I could bring in more milk and she said that she drank at least 24oz of water at each feeding! You need to stay very hydrated, also I read that oatmeal helps bring up the milk supply, I ate 2 packets of oatmeal for breakfast and after about 2 days I had already noticed a difference! Also, you can nurse your daughter and then pump after wards, this should help as well. Good luck and please continue on w/the breastfeeding.

Breastmilk is fully tailored to babys needs, but from 6 months onwards both breastfed and formula fed babies need extra iron in their diet as stores from birth are startng to run low. It's totally your choice as to whether you want to stp breastfeeding. I wish I could have breastfed my son until now...I had to give up when he was 6 days old because my milk didn't come in and he ended up severely dehydrated, with severe jaundice and was admitted back into hospital in the neonatal unit.

If you want her to get a wider range of vitamins give her food first then milk.

Since April 2010 I didn't pump out my breast milk because i think i have production problems with my milk it is not as many as before when i pump it out after 2 to 3 hours my breast is full again. Now it is just sufficient with my baby's need. I want her to try formula milk because i think that my breast milk lacks in nutrients.

If you feel your milk is not enough you can increase your production, check the breastfeding moms forum: http://www.circleofmoms.com/breastfeedin... .Anytime I feel my baby is hungry I feed food first and then milk, just to get her to try more and different foods. She is 8 months.

Have you tried pumping out some breast milk and splitting it with the formula? That's what my hubbs and I do when we go out for an evening. I'll pump out, and then double the amount I have by splitting it with formula. And just wondering, is there any specific reason that you believe that your breast milk isn't enough? Unless you have production problems with your milk, I personally wouldn't switch her over to formula so late. As long as she is eating other foods along with your breast milk, she is getting everything that she needs. Just remember, the reason we produce milk is because it is the most nutritionally beneficial for our babies. But, my best suggestion if you really want her on formula is to try and split it with some of your breast milk.
