she gaging on her baby food if it is too chunky. the doctor said that it was ok that she hasnt started that yet but she is almost 10 months. is anyone else not starting that yet? i feel like i am the only one! she has only two teeth in the bottom and i figure if she is still gagging on her cereal and baby food if its too chunky, that she is not ready yet.... ????

My little man was the same way, he wouldnt eat baby food with ANY chunks until he was 11 months, although he had lots of teeth. My saving grace was mini ravioli, for some reason when he wouldnt eat ANYTHING else, he ate that. Now for the awesome news.. Dont stress it, she'll do it on her terms, just keep trying, but dont push too hard. My little guy NEVER ate baby cereal he always gagged on it, still does. Only 3 months later we have gotten rid of the bottle entirely and he eats what we eat. They all do it in time.

It does sound like she is not ready for finger food. Most babies start on finger food at around 10 months so she is certainly NOT late. I would just take it slowly at her pace. This will have no effect on her later, within a year or so she will be eating normally like every other child and it will have made no difference that she was "late" so I wouldn't worry about it.

Some babies are more sensitive to texture than others and take longer to get used to lumpy food. Its not usually a problem unless they are so sensitive that they gag and throw up everything they eat.

Just be patient with her. You could try mashing the chunky stuff to a smaller chunk for her. People are really funny about the texture of their foods. Why should kids (small people) be any different? Until she is past the one year mark, any food she eats is to experiment with flavors, textures, temperatures, etc.. Almost ALL of the nutrients she needs, calories too, are coming from the breastmilk or formula she is consuming.

So, my advice here is to go with your gut. If you think she isn't ready, wait a bit and ease her into the chunkier foods. Be patient, for both your daughter and yourself. As a frightfully challenging eater myself, ask my parents, I can say that she will win when it comes to foods she doesn't like. And nothing will direct a food into the don't like catagory faster than forcing her to eat something that makes her gag.

Good luck and have fun.
