Some babies skip crawling! It sounds to me like he just wants to walk. Try doing "assisted walking", walk w/him. Maybe play a game. Have your self at one point and a few feet away have your partner or a family member or friend w/your son and coackes him to you, you can do this w/food or his favorite toy and just try to get him to walk.
I don't see any possible way to force a child to crawl, and I would never do that even if it is possible.

My son is nearly 17months and bum shuffles, he hates his tummy, and doesn't show any signs of walking as of yet, however his motor skills are more advanced than the milestones! I stopped seeing health visitors cos they kept saying that there was something wrong but he is happy and healthy and a clever little boy, so I am just leaving him to progress in his own time as he is very independant...he has recently started trying to pull him self up on the furniture but hasn't managed it fully yet...but I am not worried, he'll get there! As for it being linked to not reading I think its nonsence!

maybe you shoud get a second opinion from a different doctor. by 14 months, he should be walking. if he's cruising around the furniture, practice walking with him dont worry about him not crawling, my son crawled for a month and decided to walk at 9 months, and he reads just fine

Hi there - If you think he's ok, then he's most likely doing ok! Like other people have said, sometimes they just skip the crawling stage. My mother bum-shuffled until she walked..... I'd get a second opinion just to put your mind at ease. xo

This nurse is a moron and should not be working in a pediatrician's office. Tell your doctor that his/her nurse is giving the patients asinine advice.

Not all babies crawl. Your son will start walking soon. He's fine. Crawling has nothing to do with reading and writing - that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

I have read (please note only read) that bum shufflers usually go till about 17 months before they walk, but do just get up and walk !!! but it is very very common and completely normal ! glad your not listening to these people telling your to force your baby to crawl.

my daughter is just over 6 months, her 7 month old cousin is eating foods very happily, my daughter will only eat porrige or rusk and gags on me with everything else, but my daughter will roll on her tummy and is trying to crawl, her cousin can't even lift her head on her tummy, but can sit up, (my little girl can't sit up on her own)

my point is babies are different some develop quicker in other ways, your boy may talk earlier than some, don't stress !

Caryl, sometimes I get angry at nurses, not because they don't know what they are talking about or don't mean well, but I feel sometimes they don't give us all of the info. Please don't worry about your little guy. He sounds like he is doing just fine, some babies absolutely do skip crawling and go to walking. I know it seems a little strange or backwards to what we have alwasy been taught, but it is true. As for "forcing" him to crawl, I agree you can't really do that. You may want to try now and then encouraging him just so he can feel what it feels like to be on his hands and knees. Even just for a couple of minutes or less, just to feel the sensation of being in that position, but if you don't want to I don't think it will do any harm. Take solace in knowing that all children reach milestones at their own pace and time. If the doctor doesn't show any REAL concern, like i don't know a 3 year old that can't move on their own, then you shouldn't worry. If it were of concern you dr would point it out I feel.

Thanks for your advice.I'm really relieved to hear of another bub that bum shuffles ( all advice is appreciated) ,but another bub that does the same as Logan and is reading and writing fine as i was told that my son woulnd't write whihc really worried me.Thank You!! Logan aslo hates being on his tummy,and only sleeps on his back!

My son learnt to bum shuffle and never crawled - he's now three and walks fine, is starting to learn to write his name at playschool and has no problems. I think he bum shuffled and didn't walk because I always put him on his back to sleep (like we're told to!!) and he hated being on his tummy. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Really??wow that's not right is it making you worry about your bub when she's fine they only do things @ there own time don't they!! Logan was sitting up @ 7 months,and started pulling himself up on things @ 13 months there all different arn't they!!!

i totally agree. mine always met all the fine motor skills quick as. she was playing with toys at a month and a half has a great pincer grip everything just the grose motor. she sat up by herself at 11 and a half months and started pulling herself up to the cot a week ago and shes 14 months. they even worried us with an MRI

Thanks Melissa!!! Logan doesn't want to crawl when he can bum shuffle instead lol it does look funny i will admit but very cute!! And he hold things as he goes!! I don't think bubs should be made to do things eathier,in there own time is right!!

mine does the commando crawl and she started at 11 months. they made her go to OT and physio to learn to sit up and crawl but personally i think babies do things in thier own time and i felt she did not need that push. she is meeting her milestones just slowly. i would not be worried about crawling some babies never crawl

I've never heard this, when sitting in a chair can he pick up cherrios with just the pointer and thumb? Crawling is a phase and ppl like to scare us.. I really wouldn't worry, it sounds like hes doing great, my 7 month old is trying to skip crawling.. he refuses to use his hands.. Don't listen to the nurse...

You can't force your child to crawl, but if he's pulling himself up on things, and cruising that way, it seems to me that he just wants to walk, practice walking with him, some babies skip the crawling stage. My daughter went from that crazy bear crawl to walking in a matter of a month.. SHe skipped the hands and knees thing..
