my 7 month old (on solids) has been straining to poop for the last few weeks. First I started mixing rice cereal with juice. then i cut cereal amount in half. then i completely eliminated the cereal. last i have been feeding prunes daily. Finally, the poop is softer and i don't think she is in pain pushing anymore. What is okay as far as a baby straining and what is painful/problem.

before all of my changes, she would strain and strain getting red in face and tearing up. sometimes for a minute or more. Sometimes there wouldn't be anything in her diaper other times there was a little compact turdlette.

i know she needs the rice cereal, but i think it is constipating her.

1. how much straining is too much?

2. cereal or skip it?

My son has been grunting when he poops since he was four days old. His face gets really red and this goes on for a few mins until he gets it all out. He has done it with just formula and there was no change on rice cereal or on solids. He is 4 months old now and the pooping is just the same, just more of it. If your little one is in pain, she will let you know with screams, not grunting. Rice cereal isnt a necessity for babies, but its great to help fill them up, especially if you make it tasty by mixing it with some pureed baby food like peaches or apples or something like that.

I think as long as your child isnt in discomfort then its fine but what I wouldnt do is mix cereal with juice what id do is give the cereal and offer water with it sepeatly made up thow.I never mix any thing for my child The way I think is would i like my breaskfast mixed with my tea or coffee.

Babies are not constipated until they are pooping hard like marbles. Many go up to a week without pooping and I think ever baby gets red in the face when pooping. IF you want to give your baby water to help, CALL YOUR PEDIATRICIAN FIRST TO ASK HOW MUCH!!! Too much water in babies can be deadly! I think juice is a terrible thing for kids unless you are really watering it down. - Pears, peaches & prunes get your poop a little softer so I would try giving her some of that to soften the poop. - If she is constipated, or has bleeding from her rectum, call your doc. You may need a baby suppository. Good Luck.

Maybe try mixing the rice cereal with home made fruit puree, like apples, or veges instead of fruit juice!

And encourage her to drink plenty of water especially if its cold and u have a heater cranking inside, or its hot.

Juice isnt good for young teeth as its really acidic and sugary, and will rot teeth and destroy the enamel, also fruit juice doesnt have as much fibre in it as real fruit peices do.

Also maybe its not the rice cereal causing her to strain, it could be wheat flours etc... anyway just a suggestion i hope it helps!

well, every child is different when it comes to digesting cereal. my sons 4mos old and gets 2 1/2 tbls of cereal with 2 1/2 scoops of formula in 5 oz of water in every bottle. it doesnt seem to bother him. you just have to play with the servings and see what works best for her. as for the straining, my boys face gets beat red when he pushes! plus for some odd reason when he poops he make a wheezing sound. its scary as hell, but the doc said its ok. every baby handles things different.
