Pregnancy hip pain?

Snap! I had pain in my left hip during and after my first pregnancy, I'm 23 weeks into my second and it started up again last night. It completely ruins me by morning so i really do sympathize with you. Paracetamol never seem to work for me, you could try a few of the following things that helped eleviate the pain for me. A soak in the bath before bed, using a full body support cushion/ adding extra padding on top of your mattress and just generally easing up on physical activity. I feel your pain. I am so sorry you are having hip pain! I had it so bad last year while I was pregnant that on some days, I couldn't lift my feet up to even walk! If it wasn't my hips, it was my pubic bone in front hurting. I couldn't lay down, I couldn't stand up, etc. The only thing I could do was make sure I had a pillow big enough between my legs to keep the pressure off of my hips but some days, that wouldn't work either. I started having hip pain around July 2008 and I had Colton in Dec 2008 and to this day, I still haven't been able to ride my horse because my hip and pelvic pain was so intense, I am afriad of aggrevating it. Even now when I do extensive outside work or push mow or do certian movements, I still have pains shoot through my hips and legs. Sometimes I would sit in a warm bath to help my pain, too. I know what you are going through. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Hope you get some relief soon.

my pain has been realli bad n im onli 10 weeks the midwife said it was my hip dislocating so shes sending me 4 physio so id ask ur midwife she might be able to help ill let u no how i get on n if it works x

Girl i know your pain, this is my second preg and this never happened with the first, but i started having pain in my right hip, its horrible, nothing helps, but heres some good news, im also 23 wks and its starting to let up alot, hope it does with you also.

My doctor said it was because I did not wear good enough shoes. I bought some really good ones and I was fine in a couple of days. But you have to keep wearing them

Your hip dysplacia and the surgury wouldnt help the situation, but most probably your hips widening and also the pressure of the baby. Your baby could be in position, its head may have locked in early. I had that, but she kept popping herself in and out. Just take it easy, not much you can do about it. I know it sucks.

I had the same problem. My doctor said it was because our hip bone (the upper part of our pelvis) is a joint, but is not often considered to be a joint because it only softens and begins to become flexable during pregnancy. When it moves, it hurts a bit... and there's not really anything you can do about the pain...sorry.

you have quite a ways to go! i had the same pain with all of mine....but later in the game! are you sleeping with a pillow between your legs...I suggest a body pillow other than that, its just a thing you will have to deal with! When i was pregnant i was told to "tell the doctor everything, Even if your hair hurts, tell them!! You will never know if its something major or not till you tell them, they will have suggestions...beleive me, it felt like my hips were going to snap in half with every step for me...I wish you luck!

it could be baby sitting on your sciatic nerve. I know my little girl did that to me when i was pregnant for her. All i could really do was some streches to try to alleviate it

I had severe hip pain throughout my pregnancy too, when I was about 35 weeks along, my husband had had enough of my complaining and finally mentioned it to my doc (I had assumed that it was something I just had to live with!), she sent me to physical therapy, which did wonders to help with my pain (can't say that it went away but the exercises did help a lot!) I also decided to get a prenatal massage which helped some more and I got a snoogle pillow like you have to sleep with, I also found that sleeping on the couch with the pillow was more comfortable to me than sleeping in my bed because the bed was too firm. I also took baths that I had added Village Naturals Therapy Mineral Bath Soaks for aches and pains(you can buy this at Wal-Mart usually in cosmetics) to the water when I was in such severe pain I could hardly move (I didn't talk to my doc about doing this, so you may want to talk to yours before you do) Also, I NEVER took a bath when my husband or someone that could help me out of the tub wasn't around as a precaution because my pain would get so bad that my legs would just stop working. The pain may not go away but it did help ease mine, hopefully you can find something that works for you too!

Try sleeping with a pillow between your thighs when you sleep, & yes it is because your hips are separating to get your body ready for birth.

I've never had what you are going through but I've heard of these belts you can buy that support your bump and take some of the pressure off of your pelvis which in turn aleviates some of the pain. Hope this helps a little.

It may be pubic symphasitis. That is what I had when I was pregnant. Happens when the body releasing too much of the relaxin hormone too quickly. Your hips and pelvis often become unstable. Another symptom if there is pain when trying to put jeans on or anytime you have to shift and bare weight on one foot. The Dr told me heating pad tylenol warm bath and sent me to the chiropractor.

it's just your body preparing for the big day, buy a "peanut pillow" at Wal-mart or a full body pillow to put between your legs when you sleep. it should help.. my back, hips and belly would hurt so much when i laid in bed and that seemed to do the trick, i found regular pillows just slipped out and didnt stay in place. the "peanut pillow" was my savior

Go to the chiropractor! I went through out my pregnancy (even the day I went into labor) and she was able to alleviate all my lower back and hip pain. It is a great drug free way to alleviate pain.

Thanks everyone for your help! Last night was no better than the rest, but I'm determined to keep trying things until I find something that helps. I'm looking into getting a wedge and a foam matress pad to sleep on... *hopefully* It will help!

I had sore hips too and just when I was trying to go to sleep, the only way I got a bit of sleep was on a really really soft bed which sagged in the middle and normally uncomfortable to sleep on but it was the only thing which help me. Or you can try those thin foams mattress things which you can put over your mattress and look like those cardboard egg trays.

i got hip pain soo badly with my first (not with this pregnancy yet *crosses fingers* im 30 weeks now, so it's looking good lol)
it felt like someone was stabbing my hip/crotch area with a knife. i was told it was ligaments over-loosening. there is a medical term for it, but i have since forgotten.
it was so bad that i couldn't walk up the stairs without crying, i couldn't find any way to help it :( it only went away after i had my son.

My hip pains were horrible I couldn't sleep at night either! I tried to sleep on my stomach because it was the only comfortable way. I asked my doctor if that was ok and she said it was fine. But unfortunetly you just have to bare with the pain and count down to your due date. sorry i feel for you!

I had that too... I think its the sciatic nerve- try sleeping on your left side if you can. Also, boppy makes a pillow that goes between your knees that really helped me.

during pregnancy we produce relaxin a hormone to help stretch the ligaments at the joints to get baby out... also why some women's feet are bigger after having kids- all the little joints in the feet get stretched out and don't go back.... i digress... anyhow, I had horrible joint pain in my pelvis, hips, and SI joint (where your leg and pelvis meet). My OB was no help.. rarely was she of assistance... but I went to a chiroprator and physical therapist for the last 4 months of the pregnancy... 3-5 days a week I saw one of them. they gave me exercises to do at home to strengthen the muscles around the joints to keep them in place. It helped... didn't make it go away... but helped. I wasn't able to go up stairs, stand from a seated position, or roll over in bed with out tearing up from the pain. Get your OB to write you a script for a physical therapist... annoy them until they do. you are in charge of your body... you don't have to be in this pain. good luck... good news... birth pretty much cured me of all my pains...

That hip pain is normal... and it sucks. Mine was so bad, that if I even stepped just a little wrong, it would drop me to my knees. The best thing you can do is stay off it as much as possible and when you sleep, sleep with a body pillow or any pillow that keeps your body as alined as possible. Talk to a chiropractor. It is probably your siotic nevre that is hurting you. That happens to most women.

I had terrible pain in my hips too.While walking a few times I heard a loud click and it felt like they were coming out of socket.The docter told me that my bones were moving out to accomedate the baby during birth.they have to move out a little further if your a small framed person.Great...I found that a warm bath followed by my fiance putting firm but gentle pressure on them [squeezing together] helped.As well as getting on my hands and knees on the bed and resting my head on a mound of pillows.It seemed to take a little of the pressure off.It may get worse towards the last few weeks when the babies head drops into position.So keep using your pillow but you may need to add more to get a good angle for you.It probably won't go away tho till your baby is born.Make sure you wear good walking shoes and good luck.

I have terrible hip pains myself. I think it is from having to sleep on my side, which I am not used to. There are a few yoga poses that work very well for this kind of thing. Mainly ones where you stretch your legs outward from your hip joint instead of your knee. I am sure you van look some of them up online. Also, switching sides all through the night (I turn every time I get up to go to the bathroom) is a good way to eliviate some of the pain.

I had hip pain (and contractions!) starting at 20 weeks. The pain would shoot down my leg and my hips would completely give out. Nothing helped. A body pillow helped some. But not really. Sometimes a heating pad worked. What I did at night is I put comforters under my fitted sheet to give me extra padding. I used 5 inch think foam with my first son. I talked to my doctor and she said there was nothing really to do. The pain would go away after I had the baby. It did immediately. I'm sorry there is no cure! I did go to a chiropractor- it didn't really do too much. But it's worth a shot if you can find one. Good luck!

I'm not sure if you're having joint or muscle pain. I had horrible hip joint pain and inner pelvis pain that felt like I was being wripped apart. The best thing I found was to sleep in a recliner. Anytime I slept on my side I had trouble walking due to my hip joint for hours (I had to use a cane). I also had to stop doing stairs and had to take smaller steps. I hope you find a good position that helps!

My hips locked up on me . You are right, Tylenol doesn't work. Try a pillow between your legs which does help a little . Mostly it's pressure from the baby . As the baby grows your pelvic bone stretches . Example place your fists together with your knuckles facing each other that is your pelvis and pulling the them apart slowly is the pressure . Its human nature. I hope this helps you understand

I had really bad hip and pelvic pain while I was pregnant. It got so bad that sometimes I couldn't even do the stairs in my house or hardly walk. I ended up spending a a day here and there in bed throughout the last part of my pregnancy because it just hurt so much. Sleeping with a body pillow and changing positions often helped a little, but the moment my son was out, the hip and pelvic pain were gone. A warm bath with Epsom salts would also help a little. As the other ladies said, it is just from everything stretching and moving to accomodate your baby and get ready for birth. Hang in there... the pain will end!

yea thats prob ya problem then hun, think of all the changes happening when pregnant plus with that extra pressure, but dont worry its amazing how quick u feel better once baby is born. xx Think pain i had was to do with body frame! im only 5'0ft n weigh 6&1/2 stone,. hope all goes well xx

Well, thank you ladies for your imput! I sleep with a snoogle pillow and I can't sleep without it, but it hasn't helped with the pain... I think my small build doesn't help (I'm 5'7 and weighted 125 when I got pregnant), nor does the fact that I was born with hip displaysia on the left side. ( there was no socket for the ball of my hip to go into. Multiple surgeries have fixed the problem besides arthritis pain, until now.) But I was talking with my mom, she's a nurse and she said that because of the displaysia I could have a malformed pelvis and my hips could be out of alignment. But I'm going to push my doctor to find anything she can to help because with my previous problems, I don't need to make matters worse. Sometimes it feels like my hips are going to outright pop out of socket...

Yes. I had terrible hip pain at night which would also wake me up at night. Since I could only lay on my side that only made it worse. I would sleep with a pillow under my hip when laying on my side at night, which helped a little bit, but I could never find anything to completely alleviate the pain other than giving birth to the little guy! I think it was just the way that he was positioned. I have a smaller frame (120 lbs), so the extra weight on my hips and pelvic was enough to keep me awake at night. Hang in there!

Hiya, i had the same pain as u plus alot of pain around the pelvis that got really bad at end of pregnancy! its were the bones r moving n streching getting ready for baby to fit through n all the pressure they r putting round there as they getting bigger n bigger. I never found anything that helped it but i deffaintly wouldnt exercise that does make it alot worse. Afraid one of them things some people get some dont lol, think it worse on petite frames as well. xxx

I had a little bit of acheyness but not actual pain in my hips. I think this is because your hips are expanding to accommodate the birth. You should call your doctor for suggestions of what to do. Maybe ask them if a chiropractor would help.
