i bled for close to 8wks post birth of my son who was born in june last year, then my period returned in late november, i had another 2 days before new years & fell pregnant again 2wks later! my son is now 8mths old & i am 8wks pregnant! proof you need to be cautious if you don't want to fall pregnant again sooner than you want to. (i am not unhappy thou, i am grateful to be able to have kids, i almost thought it wasn't going to happen & then it did so)...

I only bled for a week after giving birth to my third baby,i am not breast feeding. I took my first proper period when my son was 9 wks old and it has been pretty irregular sort of coming every 21 days and lasting about 10 to 14 days its a bit of a nightmare. It will eventually sort itself out it takes a few months to get a normal, regular cycle.

Marcia I have PCOS too! I was put on the pill at the age of 13 to regulate my periods and when I came off it to try for a baby I had no periods for the whole 18 months we were trying!!! I found out I was pregnant one week before I was due to start fertility treatment!!! I know that's going off topic! I wanted to breatfeed but had to stop at 7 days because my milk didn't come in - they think it's a genetic problem in my family as the same happened to my mam and nana. I've got the contraceptive implant in so I am having periods...not very regularly like but I know if I had just been using condoms my period most likely wouldn't have returned.

Hi there, I was going to post about this yesterday, but didn't have time. My son is nearly 13 months old, and I've been breastfeeding since the birth of my son, and when he was tiny but that was months ago, I bled for 28 days after giving birth, then nothing till he was around 6 months old, and I had a very light period and I've not had one since. I wasn't even bleeding in my usual way or heavy and I thought I might.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I've got PCOS, and maybe it just needs a little more calming down, hormone wise for AF to come back to her usual regime I don't know. I'm guessing it'll come back at some point soon, becasue I'm not making as much as I used to now I'm trying to wean my son from 3 to 2 feeds a day. He's been on formula and solids since he was 5 and half weeks,, so I think I've ready to stop now. Anyone that has PCOS, I'd love to hear your input.
Good luck all.

I had my son in mid October and I have not had it return yet and I am breast feeding. When I had my 1st son I did both breast and bottle and it came back with in 2 months. After my daughter it took 4 1/2 months and I strictly breast fed her 4 mos strait- no formula. With this 3rd one I suppliment from time to time but not much. I think that some of all that how often I breast feed is a little related. You hormones still take a while to return to normal especialy if you are breast feeding. I don't remember my periods being any more painfull that they were before pregnancy. I hope this helps some. If you are breast feeding I would not worry it takes a while anyways but especialy if you are breast feeding. Be cautious though if you are not ready for another go round at pregnancy, pregnancy is still possible even though aunt flow has not come to visit yet.

My daughter just turned 1 and my cycle hasn't returned. I pump during the day and breastfeed at night only ... so about 2 feedings a day. I think everyone is different.

I had the contraceptive implant 21 days after giving birth and it's driving me mad!!! Bleeding pretty much constantly. Doctor said it should settle down and it's just because of the high dose of hormones mixed with hormones from the birth. My son's nearly 3 month old...think I'll leave it 2 more month then if it's still no better gonna have it taken out and just have the contraceptive injection.

I bled for 3 weeks with my first, first week in fact 2 days very heavy and then spotting for the remainder...was a natural birth. I then breastfed until he was 20months old and got my first period after 9 1/2 months, it was regular and light immediately. I had my second child (natural birth) and bled for 3 weeks, again the same as the last time. I am breastfeeding, he is now 9 1/2 months and I got my period about 6 weeks ago was VERY light, which was a bit of a shock but I am still waiting for it to come again!

Waters broke naturally, however was induced but vaginal delivery..
I bled initially after the birth, then got a regular period a month later. Since then (my son is now four months) I have had one other period. I am exclusively breastfeeding and have been told by numerous Mums that if you breastfeed you will not get a period and you cannot get pregnant. This is NOT true.
Doctor said to expect the unexpected. Anything goes!
Goodluck :)

I bled for about 4 weeks, if it was that long. It got lighter as time went by. I am breastfeeding, and haven't received my period yet. It all varies though with your own body mechanics.

For my first I bled for 7 weeks, stopped for 4 days, then started my period(was breastfeeding also). For my second I bled for like a week, breastfed until my daughter was about 14.5 months old. She was 16 months on the 11th and I just got my first period a couple of week ago!!! So with being pregnant, having the baby, and breastfeeding, I didn't have my period for 2 full years!! Was awsome! We'll see if it's regular or not, haven't had a second one yet :)

Katie: That's not weird at all -- I just got my period back last month when my son was 11 months old. If you exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months as recommended by all major health orgs, you have a good chance of being period-free during that time. Introduction of early solids, giving a pacifier or supplemental bottle, or regularly pumping instead of nursing can all lead to your period returning early. Did you know: for women who practice something called "ecological breastfeeding", the average time without a period after giving birth is 14.6 months!! Check out this link, which also explains how nursing can be an excellent form of contraception for at least the first 6 months if a few conditions are in place. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/fertil...

I exclusively breastfed for 6 months and continued breastfeeding while gradually adding solids. My son was nursing at night until he was almost 11 months old, when he started consistently sleeping 12 hours straight. Before that he began sleeping 8-9 hour stretches around 9 months and then started occasionally sleeping 12 hours straight. Once he dropped that last night feeding between 2-5 AM, I felt an immediate drop in my milk production, which signalled to me that my hormones had shifted. Sure enough, I got my period back less than 2 weeks later -- 3 days after my son was 11 months old, and after 20 months with no period. That was in mid-January. Right now I'm on cycle day 33, expecting to get my period any day now, so I can't say whether my cycles are regular or irregular yet. My first period in January seemed pretty normal -- a little lighter at the beginning than usual, but lasting a normal number of days.
Are you breastfeeding? I believe if you don't breastfeed then it's normal to begin ovulating again within the first 2-3 months, which means you may get a period just as the post-partum bleeding ends. I'm glad I didn't have to deal with that!

I bled the normal after birth bleed then i had about 2 days off then had a normal 7 day period then i was regular after that. I was 16, breastfeeding and my periods were regular after although the 28 days went to 30 days over about 4 months. sorry but i can't remember how long i bled for after the birth but it wasn't very long i can guess about 2-21/2 weeks.

I was breastfed my daughter for 17 months. My period came back when she was about 9 months, which seemed to coincide with her starting to take significant amounts of solids. Very soon after that I found out I have thyroid problems, so once I started taking the meds my periods became super regular. I honestly couldn't tell you wether or not they would have been regular otherwise. Currently preggers with number 2, so we shall see how it turns out this time.

I had 6 weeks of post-partum bleeding & fed my son both breastmilk & formula. My son is 5 months old & has been exclusively formula fed for 3 months now. I still haven't had a period yet. I was worried I was pregnant again so I took a pregnancy test & it was negative. Who knows when it will return!

After my c-section, I bled for 6 weeks and just started my period in week 7. I breastfed for 2 weeks and then had to start bottle feeding. I had a horrible infection in my uterus from surgery in week 3 postpardum and I had to start antibiotics. Experiencing heavy bleeding and horrible cramps in day 2 of my cycle.

I had a c-section so the bleeding after birth was minimal... a couple of days. I am feeding my almost 9-month old expressed breastmilk (unable to breastfeed normally) and my period just returned last week. It only lasted two days and was very light.

I bled after birth for just over 3 weeks, then got my period just over 5 weeks after birth. It was extremely heavy, it was like I'd just given birth again, I was flooding with every movement and at one stage I was wearing 5 Super sized pads :(. I am due for my second period in a couple of days, so I'm hoping everything has settled down now.
Oh and I'm formula feeding, since birth.

I delivered my son naturally, had the postpartum period for about 4 weeks and have only breastfed. My son was 7 months old before I had a period return. He started some solids around 6 months, I was taking bc and switched brands so for about 2 weeks wasn't taking anything. As soon as I started taking bc again my period came back. So not sure what brought on the period. My periods have not be regular, but read that is normal when taking the mini-pill.
