I have been told by many people that putting a small amount (less than a tsp.) of Rice cereal into my sons bottle will make him sleep longer and keep him full longer. I was wondering if anybody else has tried this, adn if so, has it worked? Did it negatively affect the baby in any way? I'm just really curious because my son is a big eater already and I would like for him to sleep a little bit longer. Sometimes he wakes up after only 1 1/2 hours and can eat an entire bottle again, but other times he sleeps for 3-4 hours no problem.

I started putting rice cereal in her bottle at night (the last one before bed) when she was almost 2 months old, and starting first night she slept till 5:30 AM.....2 weeks later, her pedi suggested adding the cereal to all her bottles......

Giving baby's cereal in their bottle is not recommended as it is a choking hazard. However, I tried it with my daughter but could not get the milk to pass through the nipple. Some strategies I tried that did work though were topping up before bedtime. e.g. You're baby eats at 8pm and you're ready for bed at 9:30...try giving him a couple more oz before you go to bed to make sure he is full. 2nd...don't jump up immediately when he wakes up...unless he's screaming of course. Try waiting between 5-15 minutes to see if he will fall back asleep or is truly hungry and each time try waiting just a couple minutes more. I did this with my daughter and she has been sleeping through the night since she was 2 months old.

It's not safe, and look at the nutritional value of rice cereal. There isn't much at all, and at 3 weeks, it is NOT a good thing. Your child will sleep through the night, eventually, be patient and do what is right for your child, not you! He could choke, and his stomach is not developed enough or big enough to handle it! He needs to eat every couple hours, it's just how they work. So, make him a little bigger bottle instead of risking your childs health!

im not bein funny but why do you think heath visitors dont advise that yopu put baby rice in there milk anymore its because its not at all safe there bottle can get blocked or if it doesnt mix properly then a lump of it could go through the teat into the baby throte honestly its not safe and i dont advise it at all

You have to think of it like this though...rice cereal has no nutritional value. Putting it in his bottle to make him fuller is robbing him of calories that he may need in his development. It may make him sleep longer (although that's questionable), but is it really worth it? I think that babies will sleep longer as they mature. I didn't put cereal in my baby's bottle, we just have a very strict bedtime routine, and she was sleeping 12 hours straight by 7 months. Your baby will sleep longer when he is ready, but I dont' think that cereal in the bottle is a good idea. Good luck!

My doctor told me not to but I did anyway and it actually seemed to help his acid reflux but it didn't really seem to help him sleep much longer

Putting rice into the bottle can be a choking hazard! Also, their digestive systems are not capable (especially at 3 weeks) of digesting it well and often will cause belly upset. And the sooner you begin foods, you run the risk of the child developing allergies. At 3 weeks, their tummies are TINY, and NEED to eat every 1-4 hours. The sleep deprived nights will end around 2-3 months, so try making him a bottle of all formula, or more formula before adding the rice.

I put rice cereal in my sons bottle at night only, this does help him sleep longer. If your little one is spitting up all the time the dr. told me to put a little in every bottle and that should help! My son has been sleeping through the night for a month now! how old is your little one?

My friend swore by it with her little boy and has been pushing me to do the same. She said she got an hour or two more out of him once she started.
