The rolling of the eyes is called REM sleep or Rapid Eye Movement. It is completely normal and we all do it. Some people just have their eyes open or semi open when they do it. Some involuntary muscle twitching is normal as a person falls asleep, and this type of jerking is called hypnagogic myoclonus.

my son used to do this when he was tiny .. it freaked me out .. especially because sometimes he'd do a creepy little grin .. urgh.
now at 18months he has a habit of going cross eyed and running around in a circle to make himself dizzy. crazy boy!

My mom was a labor and delivery nurse and she told me when my daughter did it that it was perfectly normal. LOL It freaked me out too. They do it until they get better control of their eyes. They also cross their eyes too it is pretty funny.

I thought this happens when they have wind? My 9 week old has done it since he was born along with the *smiles* caused by wind.

My daughter does the same thing! When my fiance and I first saw her do it we were a little freaked out, I remember thinking "oh my gosh, is she having a seizure?", but as she has gotten older I find she does it far less. Most likely due to getting more control as Kimberly said.

my daughter used to do that--and so did my dog! My husband and I were like, "omg!" lol don' t panic, it's normal....all of our eyes move when we're sleeping, but I think when we're older we can control our eyelids more, so they stay shut. unlike our babies and dogs ;)
